SPRINGFIELD HIT BY REAL TWISTER IN EARLY HISTORY

Entire Region Now Occupied by Commercial Street Swept by Cyclone in 1840, A. M. Haswell Recalls

SEVERAL MINOR STORMS FELT SINCE THAT TIME

Not Much Damage Caused by Tornadoes in Springfield Neighborhood, Historian Re- marks in Letter

Cyclones of many years ago have niched a place In Ozark history which has been recalled by A. M. Haswell, of Mansfield, a recogniz- ed authority on history of thla re- glon.

Mr. Husten, who is eighty grana "young", hus compiled countless

datound Incident the Ozarks.

-

"The report of cyclones in lous parts of the Ozarks. call to mind : the fact; that "Springfield ba had several auch' visitations In th paat." sold Mr. Hlaawell.

+

1 NORTH SIDE HIT

"The late Dr. E. T. Robberson, who was for many years the most prominent and best loved man In the city. once told me that when he was a litte boy, probably about the year 1840, the entire region now oc- cupled by Commercial street and the North Side yards of the Frisco. Was awept by a cyclone that left not a tree standing where before was heavy forest. Of course there were no bulldings there at that thine.

"Whether there were any more such storms during the next 23 -

years the records do not show. but In the summer of JSt? a little twist - er came along. Imped off the steeple of the St. Paul M. E. church bulldlug, that then stood on the southwest corner of South und

Walnut, but did no further damage.

CYCLONE REFORTED IN 1873

"I think It was in the spring of 1873 that another small cyclone ar- riYAH It tank all the rest and will-

and . amahed. It-flat rexactly tween " the foundation walls which it stood, and sped away "On the eighteenth of. April fans

as it; siept .on its way to tak hundred lives in the doomed town of Marshfield. "But; while It work ed . havo In the southern part of Greene county, all that Springfield got from it. was a shorp. dash -of hall. But on the" fifth"of November 1883 the city was not so fortunate. +

· WOOLEN MILL HIT -

+

Late that afternoon a small gray cloud rose In the southwest. and swiftly. developed Into a cyclone. It hit the old woolen mill a eccond time, and finished It: leaped to a two-story .house standing where the traction company's barn is on Boonville and Division, wrecked the house and killed MIsg Edmondson; Jeuped again to Locust and Benton avenue, where ! cut off the upper story and roof from a brick resl - dence, shot that roof, flat ways, across the block and cut off the up -: per half of another residence, and flung the two roofs against the west wall of the Sacred Heart Catholic church at Summit and Locust, and most of the building went down In a heap of wreckage. Here the storm . jumped .diagonally : across Locust street and destroyed" an- other large residence, , killing a woman who had fled there for re- fuge; and so on northeast through the surburbs. It killed all told, six people; wounded about a hundred more, and did about $100,000.00 of damage.

"That was nonrly 44 years ago, and Springfield nas not bad a ser- lous wind storm since. There Is an ohl ndage that "lightning never strikes twice In the same place." but the past of Springfield proves . that colores do, Let us hope that, the winds have decided to permit. the ueen of the. Ozarks to occupy her throne in peace and prosperity . in all years to come".
