YOUNG NEEDS DOCTOR


The shooting occurred.about 5:30 o'clock yesterday Afternoon. After firing the shot, Young staggered and would have fallen in a sudden attack of weakness had he not been supported by by -standera.'


Police took Young to headquar- ters, where he was registered for Investigation, pending a change in the condition of the wounded man. A doctor was called to the jali and treatment waa administered to the wounds which covered Young's face and head. Both eyes were swollen and badly discolored, his lips were cut and one cheek was raw and bleeding.


Rogers, wha was apprehended a short time after the shooting. was detained by police for questioning but was jater allowed to return to bis home. Hs admitted being in the hotel room with Gurley and!


Young at the time of the fight but denied taking any part in the al- tercation. Hle . also charged that Young had stolen money from both Gurley and himself.


1 ONCE ON POLICE FORCE


Gurley had returned to Spring- field only a few months ago after a trip to California and was not em- ployed. At one time he had been associated with a brother here in the dalry business. He had alao been a member of the Springfield police force for a few months, Berv- ing when D. C. Welch wag chief of police. With his wife and one"ton. ; - Ralph, he had lived with his mother. Mrs. M. A. Gurley, at 2126 North Boulevard.


The family and two brothers. A. E. Gurley and W. B. Gurley, who live on the East Kearney street road, were at the bedside last night.


POLICE CALLED EARLIER


Police had been called to the Grand hotel about 5 o'clock yester - day afternoon after an anonymog valler had informed them of # "battle" in progress in one of the rooms. Arriving there, they found Young alone, bearing the marko of heavy blows on his face and head. Officers claimed that Young showed no signs at that time of be- Ing under influence of liquor. Both of Young'y assailants had disap- Leared at that time, the .officers said.


Thirty minutes later, the police ngaln were called to the hotel by the report that Young had shot one of hils assilants.
