Many Historic Betare On Drury College Campus

Traces of Old St. Louis Road, Rifle Pits, Stono Monumen! and Pro-Historio Mounds Cited by Dr. Shepard.

Drury college probably bas the distinction. of having more historie features on ' ita campus than any other college in this section of the country, according to data compiled by Dr. B. M. Shepard, former profes- jeor of geology at the college.

The camper has traces of the old Bt. Loule road, rifle pita, a stone monument and pre-bistorio mounds.

The old St. Louis road ran across the northeast corner of the campus diagonally to the southwest cerner.

During the Civil war. the Federal troops were in . possession of Spring- field and constructed earthworks on. both sides of the road where it ran across the campus. These earth- worka, or rifle pita, are now covered with aod and stand practically as ihigh w' when firat made.

-

Beveral forta were established lo Springfield at that time. One wMa on the old St. Louis road whinh ren close to where the Kentwood Arme hotel is now loosted. Another wu above the present rook quarry on College street.

-

After the Battle of Wilson Oreet. General Frios moved to Springfield and camped a little to the west of where the Frisoo' station now stands. The Federal soldiers had retreated to Rolla but soon came back towards Springfield.

General Fremont detached & com- pany, of cavalry under Zagonyl, who detoured : through ""the hills to the north of Springfield in order to avoid rifle pite on Drury campus and the fort on the Bt. Louis road. Ho mur- prised Price's men and completely routed them.

Atone Monument on Campus

The Stone monument was placed on Drury campus about 1886 by the United States Geodetic Survey. They determined the latitude as 37 de- groes, 13 minutes and 18.94 seconds and the longitude ~ 93 degrees. 17 minutes and 17.08 seconds. The monument was erected a little north- east of Fairbanks ball as the point of observation.

There are several prehistoric mounds on the campus, according to D :. Shepard, and most of them are In fairly good shape, although one has been graded over and obliteratec. When this region waa first visited by the white nian. the Osage Indians were in occupation. Before them came prehistoric races, namely the Moun d Buildera. Representing these are groups . low mounds scat- tered thivughout the Ozarks. These

mounde are sometimes so low aa to be hardly noticeable, and they are rarely elevated more than two of

three' feet"" above the surrounding country. They often are twenty or thirty font in diameter. usually er- ranged in irregular groups. number- - ing from half a doren to nifty or dirty. and standing from 100 to 180 feet apart.

-------

They are rarely more than a quer- - tor of'a mile away from water, being mostly " located in Irregular. groups, or rows'in the narrow valleys sloping toward springe' or water courses. They are seldom found in the broad- fer, Jower valleya, either because of the fear of overflow or for the reason that more dense forests covered the river bottoms than now prevail.

Mounda Often l'ortrugnized.

The original ' afight ciration cf those mounds has caused then; to be often unrecognized, and the farmne: by plowing and harrowing. has de- mollsbed many of them or greatly reduced their alze. They are fre- quently marked. In a field of grain. as little islands of more luxurious growth. -

These mounds are. without doub: the remains of human habitations. -the villages of the Mound Build- ers. which appear to have been com- posed of circular adobe huts. struc- tures made of mud walls of aun- , dried bricks. with thatched roc!e like those of the Manda !! !: tiene de- scribed by Lewie and Clark. When : the adobea were abandoned. the de- cay of the thatched roof and the ac- tion of the elementa cooa reduced them to the condition of low mounds, as they appear today. A section of the mounds shows a line of mould at about the level of the ground. Indications of the floor of the dwelling. with remains of char- coal often marking the position of the fire-place in the hut which ap- pears to have always been round in shape.

The absence of bones, or any human remains, shows that :hey were not burial mounds. The mi :.. dried adobe of which they were jich- ably made la further evidenced by the absence of atones or coarser ma- ' torial 'ta " them."".The prooral antince' of Quinta. or- domestic "ulshall . would " indiosto ** 'a " people "' unwarifte'/'and generously low in the scale of civil- Ization. It has been estimated that In Greene county there are at least

220.1

10.000 of these moupds. No one ! knows just what became of this ,

ancient race, but more than likely i they were driven out by another more powerful tribe of maybe the race Intermingled with another. al- though it is doubtful as to their es tinction.
