Worked for Road Since 1882, When He Rode First Train on Southern Branch


George S. Burney, 18 years old, one of the first telegraph operatora employed on the Springfield-Mem- phis division of the Frisco lines dropped dead. on the Frisco depot platformi at Mansfield, according to word received in Springfield last night.


Physicians who were called said heart trouble caused death. Mr Burney had run around a long freight train to reach a passenger train on which he wanted to mail a post card. He fell unconscious as he reached the mall car.

Mr. Burney is survived by the widow, four. daughters; Mrs. Morris. Mrs. A. T. Newton, Holden, Mo .: Mrs. D. Plckel, 640 South Campbell avenue, and Mrs. Frank Beach, St. Loula; by one sister und several brothers.

The sergeant was born on a farm near Thornfield, In Ozark county. and lived there until he was 20 years . old. He received his edu- cation In. the schools of the vicinity.


At the age of 20 he moved to & farm in Greene county, and when he wan 23 years old he was mar- ried to Miss Allce T. O. Doss 20 additional


Burkehend. For years he lived on a farm Fix miles southwest of Springfield.


: Sergeant Doss was then appoint- ed gau deputy sherif by:' Sheriff George : Spencer. He moved? to Springfield 'and held the office for four years. Upon completion of this term he operated his farm for two years, although he maintained his residence in Springfield.


Four years ago he was appointed to the Springfield police force as mntrolman, holding that position for .. one year. For almost three years he served. as reserve officer und last November was promoted to the position of desk sergeant. which he holds at the present tline. Sergeant Doss is a member of the First Presbyterian church and of the Modern Woodmen of America ..

The coroner of Polk county was called and decided that an in- quest was unnecessary. Mrs. Bur- ney was belleved to have tried to fix the fire when the flames ignited her clothing. The body was badly charred. .

Mrs. W. H. Martin, 84, of Bostid, N. C., died at 6:30 o'clock Wednes- ; day morning, according to word re- celved here yesterday. Mrs. Martin was the mother of C. G. and G. P. Martin, owners of the Martin Broth- ers Piano company. C. G. Martin returned to Springfield yesterday. his mother having shown conalder- oble Improvement. for a few days before his departure. G. P. Martin remained at the bedside. C. G. Mar- Un returned yesterday evening to attend funeral services.

John Rupple, a former realdent of Springfield, died at bla home in Seattle, Wash., on December 11, according to word received yester- day from Mrs. Rupple by Mrs. A. J. Scott, 430 Kimbrough avenue.


Mr. Rupple, who lived in Spring- feld more than 10 years, went to Seattle four years ago, where he lived until the dato of his death lle is survived by his wife and one bon, Harry Rupple.
