ANTIGO.


Population, 5,200. Was originally settled in 1876 and the town laid out by the late F. A. Deleglise. The plat was recorded in July, 1882, and it was incorporated as a city in 1885. It is the county seat of Langlade county and is located on Spring Brook river and on the C. & N. W. Ry., 150 miles southeast of Ashland, 207 north- west of Milwaukee and 292 northwest of Chicago. It is surrounded by an abundance of hard and soft wood timber lands and the clearings have been rapid- ly developed into a good farming country which gives permanence to the city as a commercial center. The city is lighted by electric light, has water works, fire de- partment, wide streets that are well paved, a free public library, first-class hotels, two substantial banking institutions with ample capital, and 3 weekly newspapers- Antigo Herold (German), Antigo Journal and Republican. The churches are Baptist, Catholic, Congregational, German Evan- gelical, German Methodist, Lutheran and Methodist Episcopal denominations. Two parochial schools under Catholic and Lutheran management, a


$25,000 high school and four ward schools constitute the public school system. Among the more prominent manufacturing interests are planing, hoop and hub mills, roller flour- ing mill, 2 breweries, 2 saw mills, chair factory, veneer works, hub fac- tories, stave and heading owrks, foun- dry, whiffletree manufactory, iron works and the machine shops of the C. & N. W. Ry. Mail stages daily to Polar, Elton, Langlade and Markton, and tri-weekly to Morley. The shipments comprise live stock, grain, produce, lumber and manu- Factured products. Exp., Am. Tel., W. U.
