Population, 1,700. An incorporated city located on the main line and New Glarus branch of the Mineral Point div. C., M. & St. P. Ry., and on Sugar river, in Green county, 16 miles east of Monroe. the judi- cial seat, 30 south of Madison, and 90 southwest of Milwaukee. It contains Baptist, Catholic, Congregational, Metho- dist, (Evangelical, Episcopal, and Presby- terian churches, good schools, 2 banks, 2 good opera houses, plow and agricultural implement works, carriage and wagon fac- tories, a flour mill, a creamery, machine shop, and the usual number of stores, etc., for a place of its size. The press is repre- sented by 2 weekly newspapers, the Reg- ister and the Independent. Good farming . lands surround the town and can be pur- chased from $75 to $100 per acre. Sugar river furnishes especial interest here as being the first place to furnish the won- derful fresh water pearls of Wisconsin. Large quantities of hogs are raised, and with butter, cheese, grain, flour, tobacco, and the products of the above mentioned factories, form the shipments.
