Population, 12,000. An incorporated city, located on both banks of Rock river, in Rock county, just north of the Illinois line, in the center of a rich agricultural section, 14 miles south of Janesville, the county Bell Samuel, physician. seat, 75 southwest of Milwaukee, and 90 Beloit College, Edward D Eaton pres.

an excellent system of water works, an efficient fire department, an opera house and several smaller halls, several hotels, 3 banks, good schools, and churches of the Baptist. Catholic, Christian, Congregation- al, Episcopal, German Presbyterian, Meth- odist Episcopal. Norwegian Lutheran and Presbyterian denominations. This is the seat of Beloit College, one of the best- known educational institutions in the State. Two newspapers-Free Press and News- are published. The excellent water power here obtained has been one of the main factors in the prosperity of the city. Be- loit now has paper mills, automobile indi-
