Population, 2,000. Is a prosperous village on the shore of Lake Superior at the ter- minus of the Northern div. C., St. P., M. & O. Ry., in Bayfield county, 12 miles north of Washburn, the county seat, 21 north of Ashland, and 366 northwest of Milwaukee. It is lighted by electricity, the plant being owned by the city, has an ex- cellent system of water works, an efficient fire department, churches of the Catholic, Congregational, Episcopal, German Luth- 10 eran, Methodist, Presbyterian, Scandinav- the ian and Swedish Lutheran denominations,


library, a public hall, a bank, 2 good ho- tels, the Island View Hotel and the Davis House, a steam saw mill, planing mill, 3 large fish packing establishments, etc. A weekly newspaper. the Bayfield County Press (Rep.), is published. The Lake Su- perior brown stone quarries in the vicinity yield a superior quality of building stone. This is a popular summer resort and the climate is especially favorable to those afflicted with dyspepsia or pulmonary troubles, etc. Madaline and Bass Islands, two summer resorts, are within a half hour's sail.
