never interrupted, and during the win- ter season Manitowoc is recognized as one of the best ship yard cities on Lake Michigan. Incorporated as a city in 1870, it has had a steady growth. The indus- tries of the city are varied and extensive, but the possibilities are far from being reached. The city contains a ship yard an excellent dry dock and a floating dock, 3 breweries and large malt houses, 10 cigar factories, an aluminum factory for novel- ties of all descriptions and aluminum goods, extensive iron works, several wagon factories, 2 coal docks with a capacity of 100,000 tons each, an edge tool manufactur- ing company, a flouring mill, a tannery, a glue factory, vinegar works, 2 box factories, 3 planing mills, 6 brick yards, 3 canning factories. etc. Two large new grain elevators have recently been built, with a capacity of 2,000,000 bushels. There are 3 banks and 3 first-class hotels, while 2 high schools, 2 ward schools and several sectarian schools, give the city a well marked reputation in educational matters. The various religious denominations are represented by 12 churches. The city also contains the spacious County Insane Asy- lum Hospital, costing $90,000, and the Pol- ish Orphan Asylum, which cost $15,000. Five newspapers-English and German-are pub- lished. The shipments constitute large quantities of leather, flour, grain, cheese, etc. Stages to Rosecrans and intermediate points daily. Telephone connections. Tel., W. U. Exp., Am. and National. Henry G.
