Shawano county, is situated on the Wolf River and on the C. & N. W. Ry., 14% miles north of Clintonville, and 152 miles northwest of Milwaukee. The city and the surroundings are naturally adapted for a summer resort, the lakes and river abund- ing in fish of almst every description. The water power has especial advantages for manufacturers. The hard and soft wood resources of Shawano county are extensive, and their industrial surroundings are such as to offer an exceptionally ad- vantageous location for the manufacture of furniture, agricultural implements, woodenware, etc. The timber consists of red and white oak, maple, basswood, birch, elm, black and white ash, pine, hemlock, tamarack, poplar, cedar, etc. The churches are of Presbyterian, Episcopal, Methodist, Lutheran, and Catholic denominations. Has a fine high school, 2 banks, a planing mill, a saw mill, a flour mill, a paper and pulp mill, a brick factory, a brewery, foun- dry, good hotels, three weekly newspapers, the Shawano County Advocate, the Shaw- ano County Journal, and the Volksbote- Wochenblatt.
