GREEN BAY.

foot of Green Bay, in Brown county, of which it is the county seat, 113 miles north of Milwaukee, 198 north of Chicago, 185 northeast of Madison, and 49 northeast of Oshkosh. It is situated on both sides of the Fox river, which is spanned by five bridges. It was first settled in 1668 by French missionaries and traders, and is the oldest settlement in the state. It be- came a U. S. garrison in 1816, received a village charter in 1838, and a city charter in 1854. Brown county was organized in 1826, when the county seat was located at De Pere, but it was removed to Green Bay a few years later. The vicinity · has devel- opend into one of the finest agricultural and grazing districts in the State. The

business of raising blooded horses-Norman Percheron-from stock imported has been largely engaged in, both for home and other markets. Exceptional transportation facilities are offered by the C., M. & St. P. Ry., the C. & N. W. Ry. (depots 1/2 mile apart on opposite sides of river), the K., G. B. & W. Ry., and the G. B. & W. R. R.
