MADISON.

Population, 23,000. The capital of the state of Wisconsin, and the county seat of Dane county, is on the C., M. & St. P. Ry., on

Central R. R., 82 miles from Milwaukee, 38 from Janesville, 130 from Chicago, and 270 from St. Paul. Situated between the two most prominent of the cluster of lakes which flow into and form a part of the head waters of Rock river. The site, upon which the city of Madison is located, early attracted attention by its picturesque posi- tion and surroundings, situated midway be- tween Lake Michigan and the Mississippi river. As a center of prospective popula- tion, it was chosen for the Territorial cap- ital in 1837, when not even a log cabin ex- isted for many miles around to distinguish it from the wilderness. The central portion surrounding the Capitol Park occupies a square mile of undulating land, reaching upon the lake ridges and varying from 50 to 75 feet above water level. Its progress has been gradual, and at the present time Madison boasts of the beauty and elegance of public and private buildings worthy of the appellation of the "Gem City," so gen- erally accorded- to it by tourists and visi- tors. While enjoying the luxuries of re- fined city life, its private residences, the best of them distributed along the emi- nences of the lake ridges, afford a quiet retirement, reminding the observer of rural life among the many charming spots on the Hudson. The proximity of the numerous lakes, with living springs for their supply, accounts for a humidity of atmosphere dur- ing the heated summer season, wanting in some popular resorts which are swept by the arid atmosphere from surrounding prairies. Its mineral springs are claimed to possess high medicinal virtues. Madison emerged from village to city life in 1856, and has become a center of attraction, es- pecially during the sessions of the Legisla- ture. The State University, the principal buildings of which are situated upon an eminence a mile west of the Capitol, is within a park comprising 375 acres of land, including 195 donated by Dane county to- wards the agricultural department. The whole cost of the buildings proper belong- ing to the University, exclusive of the ob-
