SUPERIOR.
Population, 40,000. The judicial seat of Douglas county, is advantageously located on the bays of Superior, St. Louis. and Al- louez at the mouth of the St. Louis and Nemadji rivers. It has commodious har- borage for the fleets of the great lakes and the very largest boats on Lake Su- perior are consigned to its docks. New docks and terminal yards are to be built in the near future on account of the re- newed prosperous condition of trade. It
may not be generally known that the Su- perior-Duluth harbor stands third in point of tonnage received and shipped, New York and Philadelphia alone surpassing it. A
large commercial trade has been establish- ed and its numerous warehouse and coal, merchandise and iron ore docks are busily employed in furnishing the west with sup- plies. The shipments of flour aggregated 2,000,000 barrels, iron ore shipments 4,000,000 tons and the coal receipts to 2,000,000 tons. There are 12 grain elevators here with a capacity of 19,500,000 bushels. Altogether, the lake commerce of Superior amounts to about 10,000,000 tons. The city is possessed og exceptional railroad facilities, the fol- lowing lines radiating from it, and with their branches and connections, providing access to all parts of the United States; HOLLISTER'S ROCKY MOUNTAIN TEA the C., St. P., M. & O. Ry., the N. P. R.|
(See page 4.)
R., W. C. Ry., C,, M. & St. P. Ry., D., S. S. & A. Ry. and the G. N. Ry. Two other roads are making surveys preparatory to building their lines to this city. It is 179 miles from Minneapolis, 152 miles from Eau Nutting, Claire and just across the bay from Du- luth, Minn., with which it is connected by street car, ferry boats and two railroad bridges. The Wisconsin Central Ry. en- ters the city via the N. P. R. R. from Ash- land and the east, and the C., M. & St. P. perior embraces the plats of Superior, South Superior, West Superior, Allouez and Itasca. The postoffice is Superior with agent, branches at East End, South End, Allouez and Itasca. The site of the city is one of the most beautiful and commanding of- western cities, and it is laid out on a liberal scale, with broad streets and avenues lined with fine business blocks and manufactur- ing establishments, handsome residences, schools and churches. The city is lighted by electricity, has 35 miles of finely paved and macadamized streets, 140 miles of side- walks, an excellent system of sewerage and water works, miles of street railway, an ef- ficient and thoroughly equipped fire depart- ment, public halls, 2 theaters, public li- brary of 15,000 volumes, excellent public schools, with an attendance of 6,700 pupils, colleges and academies, a state normal school, a board of trade, a commercial club, building and loan associations, first-class hotels, 3 hospitals, 5 banks, telephone ex- changes, etc. The press has 2 dailies and 6 weeklies. Of churches there are: Baptist, 3; Catholic, 6; Congregational, 3; Episcopal, 2; Evangelical, 2; Hebrew, 1; Lutheran, 12: Methodist Episcopal, 9; Presbyterian, 2. The different secret and benevolent so- cieties have a full representation, in ad- dition to which are various other clubs and miscellaneous societies. There are numer- ous parks and squares handsomely laid out and maintained by liberal appropriations. In addition to the above accessories living is cheap, epidemics unknown, taxes are low, the means of protection to life and prop- erty are abundant and nothing left wanting nor untried that is necessary to the main- tenance of the city's supremacy or the prosperity of the people. The federal gov- ernment has purchased ground for the erec- tion of a postoffice to cost in the neighbor- hood of $1,000,000. The growth of the city during the past ten years is worthy of note .. The manufacturing interests include saw and planing mills, iron works, steel barge works-this plant works a force of about 1,200 men and is now enabled to build boats 550 feet long-boiler works, foundries, chair works, breweries, dry docks, coal and iron docks, cooperage works, flour mills, wind mill plant and many other industries em- ploying labor in large and small numbers. The fishing interest is also an imporatnt in- dustry. Exp., Adams, American, Great Northern, Northern Pacific, Southern, United States and Western. Tel., W. U. and North American and Postal. Kirby Thomas, postmaster.
