Claire river flows into the Chippewa river at this point. These rivers. spanned by good bridges, are studded with numerous manufacturing institutions, consisting principally of large saw mills, 2 foundries. a pulp and a paper mill, a refrigerator factory, a linen mill. 2 furniture factories, a fruit canning establishment, 3 shoe fac- tories, a box factory, 2 breweries and a pork packing house. Eau Claire has an electric fire alarm system and 4 hose houses as a part of its fire department, which is maintained at an expense of $30,000 a year. It has first-class hotels. an opera house costing $60,000 and having a seating capac- ity of 1,200, 4 public parks, a good sewer- age system, paved streets, fine school buildings, including a high school costing $80.000, a hospital under the care of the Sisters of Mercy. a free public library. an excellent street railway system having interurban connection with the city of
Chippewa Falls. 12 miles north. Midway between these two cities is Lake Hallie, a summer restort with attractive surround- ings. A noted characteristic of the climate is its dry, pure atmosphere, which for healthfulness is unexcelled and is favor- able to those affected with pulmonary troubles. The soil is porous and the street grades are good. vet not precipitous, which gives the city unsurpassed natural drain- age. There is an abundant supply of ex- cellent water. The Chippewa river is the second largest river in the state. Its great valley proffers a great and readily accessi- ble supply of various kinds of hardwood for manufacturing purposes, much of which undoubtedly will be made tributary to Eau Claire in the future. In recent years many valuable and substantial im- provements, both public and private, have been made. Among recent manufacturing enterprises that have been established in the city are the Cirkel Manufacturing Company, making staves and barrel heads, the Eau Claire Box and Lumber Co., the
Ritchie-Clark Co., makers of compressible Arnold Wm, mason, 909 2d av. beds; the McLaren & Musson Shoe Com- pany and the C. P. Larson Shoe Company. Notable recent improvements are a sub- stantial iron bridge across the Chippewa river costing $40,000, an arch bridge across the Eau Claire river costing $30,000, a Car-
