churches, excellent schools, 3 banks, first- class hotels and 4 weekly newspapers, Merrill Advocate (Rep.), Merrill News (Dem.), Star (Ind.), and Wisconsin Thal- bote (German). The city is surrounded by an excellent hardwood farming country, which is being rapidly developed, and there are numerous small saw mills for the manufacturing of hardwood lumber.
