Settled in 1867, it has Catholic, Lutheran, Meth- odist and Presbyterian churches, excellent educational advantages, and a bank. A weekly newspaper-the Chetek Alert-is published. This place is a favorite summer resort, the Chautauqua As-

Chippewa county, is an incorporated city, located on the Chippewa river, on the Chippewa div. of the C., M. & St. P. Ry., the Duluth line of the Northern div. C., St. P., M. & O. Ry., and the Wisconsin & St. P. divs. and Eau Claire br. Wiscon- sin Central, 12 miles north of Eau Claire, 104 east of St. Paul, and 358 northwest of Chicago, The E., C. C. F. & N. E. Ry. is building new line extension from this point, 75 miles northeast. It is also con- nected with Eau Claire by an interurban electric car service which runs hourly be- tween the two places. The city is lighted by electricity, has an excellent system of sewerage, a paid fire department, and elec- tric fire alarm system and free mail de- livery. The water works system of the city was laid in 1885 and affords a splen- did fire protection and excellent water for private consumption. The supply is ob- tained from a system of springs located about two miles east of the city, on the Chippewa river.
There are twelve churches, seven ward schools, and a hand- some and commodious high school build- ing, a fine court house and jail, city build- ings, many fine business structures and costly residences, a hospital, with 120 beds, 3 banks, good hotels, a Carnegie library costing $30,000, and a new Union Depot of C., M. & St. P. and Wisconsin Central costing about $20,000. Two daily newspa- pers-Herald and Independent-and 3 week- lies, Times, Herald, Catholic Sentinel-are published. The new county asylum, lo-
ated just outside the city limits, is now completed at a cost of over $50,000, and s a handsome and imposing structure. The Home for the Feeble-Minded, 3 miles southeast of the city which originally cost ;300,000, has been added to and improved within the last two years to the extent of $150,000, and a further appropriation of ;100,000 is asked from the state. The water power afforded by the Chippewa river af- fords unrivaled facilities for manufactur- ing enterprises; Duncan creek empties into the Chippewa river within the city limits, affording additional facilities for manufac- turing. Among the more prominent indus- tries are the flouring mills and elevator
Power Co. (capacity 350 barrels per day), sash, door and blind factories, canning fac- tory, foundry and machine shop, brewery, woolen mills, planing mills, 4 shoe fac- tories, a large beet sugar factory, a shirt factory, 2 brick yards, a glove factory, 6.
and Boom Co., Chippewa Logging Co., Chippewa River Improvement and Log Driving Co., and the Mississippi River Logging Co., are located here, and large sums of money are disbursed by them in the payment of wages, materially aiding the business of the city. The city is sur- rounded by a rich farming country, and within easy access are immense tracts of hardwood lumber for manufacturing pur- poses, while the natural healthfulness of the climate and the excellent water sup-
