LA CROSSE.

Population, 35,000. The judicial seat of county of same name, is an important, pro- gressive city situated at the confluence of the La Crosse and Black rivers with the Mississippi. Its transportation facilities are unexcelled. The La Crosse div. of the C., M. & St. P. Ry. places it in direct com- munication with Chicago. The Southern Minnesota, Dubuque and River divisions of the same road open a highway through Iowa, Minnesota and the Dakotas and the Wisconsin Valley and Chippewa Valley di- visions afford access to the pine and hard- wood regions of Wisconsin. The C. & N. W. Ry., with its various divisions, develop extensive territory. The G. B. & W. R. R. brings La Crosse in contact with lake navigation, over 200 miles nearer tide water. than Chicago. The C., B. & Q. R. R. trav- erses the territory on the east bank of the Mississippi, as those already mentioned oc- cupy the west, and the Father of Waters itself, during the season of navigation, is an important factor in the problem. The

La Crosse & Southeastern Electric Ry., now under construction will bring La Crosse into more direct communication with Vernon, Crawford and Richland coun- ties. The site of the original city was sur- veyed in 1842, but it was not incorporated until 1856. For years the staple industry was the manufacture of lumber, a business which is still carried on to a large extent. The increase is shown more in the exten- sion of the new manufacturing industries, and this steady growth has been owing more to the capital and enterprise of its own citizens than adventitious introduction

there are large foundries, machine shops, boiler works and marine ways, ladies gar- ment factory, tobacco warehouses, large packing houses, glove, mattress, box, cigar, cigar box, candy, cracker, soap, furniture, broom, vinegar, boot and shoe, confection- ery, trunk and package factories, 3 button factories, 2 knitting works, the best equip- ped carriage works in the state, sash, door and blind factories, a large tannery, rub- ber clothing factory, tool works, granite and marble works, electrical instrument

breweries, 8 cooperages, and its flour mills have a daily capacity of 2,500 barrels; there

er works, is lighted by electricity, has a well-disciplined and well-equipped paid fire department, the most substantial and con- venient school buildings, and the most efficient system of public schools that can be found anywhere. There is an elegant and commodious city building, a free li- brary and a new $150,000 court house. The city possesses great attractions for resi- dence; it is well paved, well watered-the residence portion beautifully platted and well kept; its educational advantages are kept up to a high standard, and Oak Grove Cemetery, with its wealth of floral decora- tions, will compare favorably with those of the largest cities. It has 50 churches, an opera house and several music halls, and these in connection with several social and literary societies, adequately administer to the religious, mental and moral cravings of the inhabitants. There are 3 daily news- papers, the Leader-Press, the Morning Chronicle and the Abend Stern, all of which issue semi-weekly editions. The weekly papers are the Argus, the Nord- stern, the Vlastenec (Bohemian), and the Volksfreund. There are several first-class hotels, among which may be mentioned the Stoddard (just completed at a cost of $350,- 000 for building and furnishing), Cameron House, Hotel Grand, Hotel La Crosse, and the Hotel Law. Stages daily to Brinkman, Coon Valley, Esofea and Viroqua. Tele- phone connections. Tel., W. U. and Pos- tal. Exp., Adams, Am. and U. S. W. B. Tscharner, postmaster.
