Population, 1,500. The judicial seat of Washburn county, is situated on the west bank of a beautiful lake of the same name and on the northern division of the C., St. P., M. & O. Ry., 103 miles northeast of Minneapolis, Minn., and 272 northwest of Milwaukee. It was first settled in 1878 and the town was laid out in 1881, when the Shell Lake Lumber Co. began the erection of their large mill and other buildings. It is surrounded by an excellent timber and farming country and has 6 churches, a high and 2 district schools, water works, fire department, electric light, local and long distance telephone facilities, a hospital, a $15,000 court house, a bank, a creamery, saw mill and 2 weekly newspapers, the Wash- burn County Register and the Watchman.
