1897. The institution was opened in temporary quarters, August, 1898. One cell wing just completed contains 300 cells. When completed the institution will have a capacity to care for 600 prisoners.

WISCONSIN VETERANS' HOME.


Located on the shore of Hicks Lake, near Waupaca.


The Wisconsin Veterans' Home was founded by the Grand Army of the Re- public, Department of Wisconsin, No- vember 16, 1887, to care for honorably discharged indigent soldiers, sailors or marines of the War of the Rebel- lion, who cannot be received into any National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers, and for their indigent wives or widows, for whom no provision is made at the national homes, and who hitherto have been separated. The property is now owned by the State, but is controlled by a board of trus- tees, elected by the department of the G A. R.
