A. Committee chose in ye affairs of manatiquod Bridge And then went to that of ye Bridges & after some Debate thereon Voted, that a Committee be chose, and then Nominated & seper- ately Voted, That Majr Wm. Hunt Lieut. Richrd Thayer & Wm Penniman be a Comttee to search & mend manatiquod Bridge (here- tofore Callª Iron Work Bridge) so as it that may serve without Danger of passing over, until the spring, if it may be mended for a reasonable cost.


ye Selectmen to build a closet for ye Powder In case &c And then went to that of Securing the town Stock of powder & Voted, That ye Select Men build a Closite one the Beams of ye Middle pret Meeting House, therefor (if it be allowed of) &c.


a sum of 200£ pounds aproed to ye Schools And then passed to that of the Schools & after some Debate thereon Voted, that two Hundred pounds old Tenor- be appropriated for the use of ye Schools Including ye rents of ye School Lands, & that each pre- cinct Draw their proportionable part of ye same.


The Town Treasurers & Town Clerk's allowance for ye years 1744 & 1745 And then proceeded to that of an allowance to ye Town Treasurer & Town Clerk for his Servis, then on a motion made to ye sd Meeting by Richd Faxon ye present Town Treasurer for a consideration of Forty Shillings per year for the two first years of his servis in sd offices, Being allowed but ten pounds per year for ye two first years see their) vote on page 51 back, and after some consideration thereon Voted, that four pounds old tenor in further allowance for sd Two first years servis, viz forty shillings more old tenor, for the year thirty seven & also Forty shillings, more for ye year thirty eight, above what was then al- lowed him in said Vote on page 51 back aforesaid - &c. Voted also twelve pounds per year for the two years past vizt. For the year Seventeen Hundred forty & four & forty five in old tenor, for his services in sª offices for sd years viz to sd Richard Faxon the present Town Treasurer & Town Clerk &c.


1746 November 24th.


Warrants. The freeholders & other Inhabitants of the Town of Brantree Qualified for voting in Town affairs being Legaly assem- bled for ye Transacting Such affairs of ye sd Town, The perticulars whereof as they were Inserted in the Warrants were as follows


Warrants - First, to consider & Determine what may be neces- sary & proper to be done Respecting ye Building ye Bridge usualy called the Iron-work Bridge, viz' Whether to Build with stone (or arched) or how the same [117] shall be done, & to order the affair in all things relating Thereto & to here the Report of the Comttee Last chose respecting the affairs of said Bridge.


Secondly To consider what may be necessary to be Done for the securing the said Town's powder &c vizt. to Determine How & where the same shall be secured & also to consider what method shall be taken to see if there be, & to prevent any Incroachments on any of the said Town's Commons, & to raise money for the effecting any of the affairs aforesd if it be thought proper or necessary

The affair of the Bridge refered to march meeting & also ye affair of securing ye sd Towns stock of Powder Refered to sd March meeting The Freeholders &c being assembled as aforesd proceeded & Chose Maj' Wm Hunt Moderator, and then proceeded to that of the Building a Bridge over manatiquod (or Ironwork) River & after some Debate thereon Voted, that the affair of said Bridge be refered to ye next March Meeting, & then went upon that of securing the said Towns Stock of Powder &c. & after that affair had been Debated in said meeting, Voted, also that the said affair of securing ye sd Towns Stock of Powder, Be refered to ye next March Meeting viz for Determining the method To be taken for ye securing the same, (L' Jnº Adams being there then sigifying to said meeting that he would take care thereof un- till then as he had done for sometime past vizt. that it might be with him) and then proceeded to that of the common & then


In ye affair of the Common Maj Jos Crossbey, M' Belcher & Mr. Thayer Comttee Voted, that a Comttee be chose to Look into that affair & then seperately Voted, that Maj' Joseph Crossbey & M'. Moses Belcher & Mr. Ebenezer Thayer be a Comttee to see if there be any Incroachments on any part of the said Towns Commons & to run & renew the Bouinds thereof as occasion may be, & that they make reporte thereof to ye next Town meeting.


1746, March 2ª.


The Anniversary Town Meeting For the Choice of Town Officers for the year Seventeen Hundred forty & Seven &c.


The Freeholders and other Inhabitants of the Town of Braintree Qualified for voting in Town affairs being Legaly assembled for the Choice of Town Office & such other affairs, the perticulars whereof as they were inserted in the Warrants were as follows.


Warrant. After a Moderator chosen, First, to chuse all such Town Officers as ye province Laws Direct to be Chosen on said annual meeting, &c Secondly, To consider further of providing a place for ye securing ye sd Towns stock of pow" Thirdly - To considr. of New Building manatiquod, vizt. that called ye Iron work Bridge & in what method it shall be done. Fourthly, To consid' of an Incouriagement for keeping Bulls & boars Fifthly, To con- sidr of a premium for killing Birds & Squrriels &c. Sixthly, To consider of Disposing of the Old Stone Meeting House. Seventh- ly, To consider of an allowance to some of our late Constables re- specting such Persons as are gone out of Town without paying such Rates as they were assessed at. Eighthly, To consider of & Determine, as the Law Direct, such Lists respecting Juriors as shall be Laide before said Town for their acceptance. Ninthly, To consider of what may be laide before said Town, respecting Townways.

Ebenezer Thayer Mr Peter Clark & Aaron Hayward And then proceeded to that of chusing Select Men ye Votes also being Collected & sorted it appeared that Mr Moses Belcher, L'. John Adams Capt Ebenzer Thayer Mr. Peter Clark and Aaron Hayward were chosen.

A premium to ye Several Constables for yº year 1747 And then on a motion made by Sam"1. Penniman & Ebenezer Spear & then ye Moderat. put ye Question whether each of the Constables, that shall serve the Town year, seventeen Hundred forty & seven shall be allowed, seven pounds, old tenor, when they shall have made up & Discharged all such Rates & Taxes as shall be Committed unto them, put to Vote & it past in ye affirmative.

Adams The Freeholders & other Qualified Inhabitants of ye sd Town of Braintree, Being assembled by adjournment from the second day of this Instant March (ye meet- ing being opened) they proceeded to consider of the affair of Providing a place for ye securing ye said Towns Stock of Powder &c. & after some Debate thereon, a motion was made to L' Jnº. Adams, that it might Be still continued with him & under his care as he Had it for some time Past. Lt. Adams being then in sd meeting consented that it should be with him and that he would take ye care of sd powder & other Town's stock of ammunition For one year yet to come & then Voted, that ye Select men provide a Large chest to be stoed sd powder, &c in Vizt. ye Question was put to Vote & It past in ye affirmative.


Voted a Comttee to make further application in ye affair of ye Bridge And then proceeded to that of New building of the Bridge Known by ye name of ye Iron Work Bridge, and after some Debate on that affair, The Question was put whether Major Joseph Cross- bey with two of the Select men be a Comttee to make farther aply- cation to ye General sessions of the peace &c. Respecting their Petition for a County Bridge &c. Pnt to vote and passed in ye affirmative.


A Negative Vote on yt of Bulls & boars And then went upon. that of an allowance for Bulls & boars ye Question was then put whether there shall be an allowance by ye Town to Incouriage the keeping Bulls & boars. Put to vote & It passed in ye Negative.


A premium for Birds & Squ'ils 9d for old 3ª for young blackbirds, 6ª for Squrrel heads And then ye Quistion Was put whether there shall be a premium allowed out of the sª Town Treasury For the killing black birds & Squrriels put to vote & it past in ye affirma- tive.


And, then Voted that nine pence per head for old black birds heads & three pence per head for young black birds heads, & sixpence per head for Squrrels Heads, brought in to the Select men, from ye first day of April next Coming, until ye Last day of July next following, & no longer, all the sª prices to be in old tenor.


ye affair of ye Stone meeting house refer to May &c Andthen Voted that ye affair of ye Old Stone Meeting House be Refered to May meeting next coming.


An allowance to Nath" French 1746 March 6th. 4 £ 9/4 allowed: to Nath" French And then on a motion made to sª meeting by Nath11. French one of ye Late Constables of this Town for ye allow- ance of Four pounds - nine Shillings & four pence old tenor, for that one list, Sam" Hayden Late of this Town was taxed so much in a List Committed to the said Nath11. French to collect &c. and after some inquiry made, Voted, [119] That ye said French be allowed the sd sum of four pounds, nine shillings & four pence old tenor, out of said Town Treasury.

way Layd out) Braintree Febry. 26th. 1746, (as follows) We ye Subscribers at ye Request of a number of ye Inhabitants of ye Town on ye Day abovesd, Went & Layed out a Town Way, Beginning first at Stoughton Road, Thence by a little Walnut tree marked about seven rods a cross Amos Stetsons Land to a heep of stones Lying in a cart way (lately purchased of sª Stetson by some of the Neighbours Living nearest there abouts & then from said way a Cross John Spear's Land Streight to ye corner of ye fence Stand- ing between sd Spear's Land, and Carpenter John Niles & along by sd fence till it comes to ye Country Road Leading to Bridgwater, all ye sd Way to be on ye East side of ye bounds mentied, And to be One rod & half wide (vizt. for a private Drift Way thro. gates, That is to say Thro' four gates, Thro' ye above Described Way Note the Last Parragraft added in sd. meeting (& By ye consent of sª parties) & by order,

The Freeholders and other Inhabitants of the Town of Braintree Qualified for Voting in ye affairs Hereafter expressed being Legaly assembled on sd Day For ye Transacting such of ye affairs of said Town, The perticulars whereof as they were Insert- ed in ye warrants, were as follows, vizt. after a modr. chosen, First, To Consid' they will by vote Determine that the Towns Commons viz the Fifteen hundred acres (so called) &c Shall lye as a free Common to all ye Legal Inhabitants of sd Town for ye future (Pursuant to a Vote on Record in one of our sd Town Book's of Records, viz. Liby 1st. folo 9th. which vote was passed The 29th. (of ye) 8 moth 1656, as by relation thereto had may more at Large appear, or whether they will Determine that sd Common shall so lye for any Limit of time that they shall think proper. Secondly, To consider of taking of some measure for ye preserving the young growth of wood on sd Common Lands &c. Thirdly, To conside of passing any necessary Vote or Votes that shall be thought proper for the Improving (as they shall think best) the stones that may be gotten on sª Common Lands from time to time &c as also to consid' of chusing such Commttee or Comttees as they shall think fit or necessary.


Moderator. The meeting being opend &c they proceeded & chose ye Honble Jnº Quincy Esqr. Moderat"

[121] 1747, May 18th.


Representative Pursuant to a Warrant or Precept to the Select- Men of the Town of Braintree for ye Choice of a Representative, the freeholders & other Qualified Inhabitants being Legaly assem- bled, proceeded & after the Votes were Collected & sorted, it ap- peared that ye Honble John Quincy Esqr. was chosen Representative.


And as the Warrants for sd meeting Included other affairs of sd Town to be Transacted on sd Day the perticulars whereof were as follows. after a Modr Chosen. First, To Consid' whether there shall be more than one Schoole kept in sª Town at The Towns Charge & if so, Then to Determine as shall be thought proper. Secondly, To Considr of raising Money to Defrey Town Charges &c. Thirdly, To Considr of Disposing of the Old Stone Meeting House &c. Fourthly, To Conside of the request of sundry persons, respecting rates either for an abatement or an allowance. Fifthly, To Conside of the request of James Penniman respecting the altera- tion of some part of the Town way through his Land. Sixthly, To conside of the reporte or reports of any one or more of ye Town's Committees. Seventhly, To Conside of Chusing a Surveyer of Highways in the North part of said Town (or in any other part of said Town if occasion be. Eighthly, To Chuse a Comttee to make up accompts with the Town Treasurer. Ninethly, To inquire if anything hath been done at ye Courte by ye Comttee appointed in ye affair, of the Stoping or any ways obstructing the passage of Fish up the River betwixt Weymoth. & Braintree & Chuse a Committee or Comttees in the affair as occasion may be.


Moderator. And being assembled as abovesd proceeded & chose the Honble John Quincy Moderat".


A Negative vote on ye School &c An affirmative Vote In ye affair of ye Schools. The Moderat" then put the Question, Whether there shall be but one School kept In this Town the present year, & after some Debate thereon, the Question was put & it past in ye Negative, & then the Question was put whether But two Schools shall be kept in this Town this present year at the sd Towns Charge, vizt. one in ye North & one in ye South precinct, put to vote & it past in the affirmative.


The South pret to be allowed part of ye School Money And then on a motion made to the Meeting by some of the people of the South pret for an allowance as heretofore, of part of the School, & then the Question was put whether the South pret shall allowed (a proportionable) part of the School Money, put to vote & it past in ye affirmative.


A Comttee Chose to sell the Stone Meeting House And then proceeded to that of Disposing of the Old Stone Meeting House,

&c. and after some Debate thereon, Voted that a Comttee be chosen to sell or Dispose of the sª Old Stone Meeting House & then sepe- rately L' John Adams, Capt Thoms. Wales & Major Wm Hunt be a Comttee in that affair.


Benja Porter a late Constble to be allowed on ye province & town Rate in his list for Chris. Hayden & Jno Stoder &c And then Voted that Benja. Porter late Consle be allowed one pound, twelve Shillings & four pence on the province & town rate of Christoph" Hayden in his lists, vizt. sª sum in the old tenor & then also Voted , That the sd Porter be allowed the Poll Money in his Lists on ye province & town Rate of John Stoder.


Also Jnº Clark to be allowed ye Poll money Taxt on sd Stoder in ye province & Town rate Also, Voted That John Clark a late Constable be allowed the Poll money Taxed upon ye sª John Stoder in the lists committed to him to Collect, vizt. on the province & Town rate.


A Comttee close to view the part of a Town Way through James Pennimans Land And then went to that of the request of James Penniman abought altering of some part of the Town way through his land & after some Debate thereon, Voted, that a Comttee to view the conditions of the same, & to make reporte To the Town of the curcumstances thereof at their next March Meet- ing, and then Voted that M' Richard Thayer, M' Moses Belcher & John Curtis be a Commttee in that affair & that they reporte as aforesd


Mr Richard Brackett Ephm. Thayer Jun' & Ichabod Holbrook were chosen to the office of surveyers of Highways &c And then went to that of Chusing Surveyers of Highways since some chose To that office Last March fail &c. and then Voted that Ephraim Thayer Jun', Be one of the Surveyers of highways, since that Jnº Noyce fails &c. Voted, also, that Ichabod Holbrook serve as one of the Surveyors of Highways, since Ephraim Jones Jr also fails.


Voted, also, that Mr. Richd Brackett be one of the Surveyers of this Town &c


Mr. Moses Belcher Mr. Jnº. Adams & Wm Penniman a Comtee. to settle accts with the Town Treasurer - And then Voted, that Mr. Moses Belcher, Mr. John Adams & William Penniman, be a Comttee Settle & adjust accompts w Richard Faxon) The Town Treasurer.

The choice of a Representative. Pursuant to a Precept, to the Select Men of the Town of Braintree for the choice of a Represen- tative the freeholders & other Qualified Inhabitants being Legaly assembled they proceeded & after the votes were Collected & sorted, Maj' William Hunt was declared by the Selectmen, to be chosen Representative.

tree, being Legaly assembled, for the Transacting of such affairs of the Town, the perticulars whereof as they were Inserted in the Warrants were as follows. After a Moderator Chosen, First, To bring in their Valuations, to the Selectmen, Viz. of their pols, real & personal Estates. Secondly, To conside of raising of money, To Defrey the necessary charge of the said Town the Present year &c. Thirdly, To Here & Consid' of reports of the agents of this Town, respecting the Iron works Bridge so called Fourthly To conside of acting further on the reporte that may be made to said Meeting by said agents respecting said Bridge. Fifthly, To Consid' if a small Dwelling House shall be built on some part of the Said Towns Comon Lands for the use of the poor of this Town. Sixthly, To Consid' of & act on the Report or Reports of any of the sd Town's Comttee or Comttees, of any of them shall make reporte &c. Seventhly, To Consid' of reconsidering, the Vote that past at their Last Meeting, Respecting the Stone Meeting House, vizt. To consider whether the said Town will relinquish their Claim to sd Stone Meeting House as a Town (if they have any).


Moderator. The frehold"s &c being assembled as aforesd, and after calling for their Valuations, proceeded & chose M' Moses Belcher, Moderat".


Four hundred and Fifty pounds old ten". Voted, Defrey Town Charges &c £450 - And then went upon that of raising money to Defrey Town Charges, and after some Debate on & inquiry into the state of affairs, Voted, that four hundred & Fifty pounds old tenor, be assessed (on the Poles and other ratable Estates therefor, as far as it will goe.


The towns thanks to be returned to the Sessions for the pounds for mending the said Bridge And then proceeded to that of hear- ing the reporte of the Town's Agents in the affair of the Iron works Bridge, Petitioned for to be made a County Bridge, and after the sd agents reporte made to the meeting, they reporting that the Justice of the Sessions had ordered that a consideration of Be for the repairing the said Bridge. the said meet- ing then Voted, that the sd agents Return the Honed Justices of the Sessions the said Towns thanks for the same, and that it be accepted by the sd Town towards the repairing the same.


The Comttee then chose were Maj". William Hunt Capt Tho8. Wales, Mr Ephm Thayer, L' Richard Thayer, M' John Ruggles, Mr Eben. Newcomb, Ense. David Bass, Meas's Eben" Field & William Penni- man. Mr. Richd. Brackett & Eben'. Fiels to build A House for &c There reward stated &c And then went to that of Building a House for the Poor on the Towns Comon, and on their Debate on that affair, it was moved to sª meeting That the Old Stone Meet- ing might in some manner be made to serve in that case by some alteration, a Comttee being then Instantly appointed by said meet- ing. & Desired Directly to goe & view the same, & reporte again to this present meeting, what they should think advisable in the affair. The said Comttee Instantly going, returned, and by their report thought it not advisable to improve the said House, as pro- posed by alteration, But rather to pull down the said Stone Meet-

And then after some further consider- ation & Debate thereon & upon motion made by Messrs Richard Brackett & Ebenezer Field to said meeting, That, if they would let them have the said stone meeting House, viz all the Stones, Timber, with all therein & theiron and also Give them fifty pounds in Bills of Credit of the old tenor, (vizt in passable Bills of Credit Equivolent thereto) That then they would undertake and build the Town a Dubbel House on the [123] same spot where the sª Stone Meeting House now Stands, vizt- build a house of Thirty six feets in Length & sixteen feets in breadth within Bord or Stud, they the said Brackett & Field to find the Timber Bords, Nails and all other Meterials necessary, & to frame, raise & Compleat & finish said House, in all parts, and respects at the cost & charge of the said Brackett and Field, by the first of March next coming, for whch Service and costs they the said Brackett & Field to have, the said Old Stone Meeting House with all the stones Timber Bords, Nailes, or Whatsoever belongs to said house, In such sort, excepting only so many of the stons, as to stone a (small cellar under the house they are to build as aforesaid, and Fifty pounds in Bills of Credit of the old tenor - or in other passable Bills equivalent, also as afore- said, put to vote, and it passed in the affirmative.

The freeholders & other Inhabitants of the Town of Braintree, Qualified for voting in Town Affairs, being Legaly assembled for the Transacting the affair Set fourth in the warrants vizt that of the request of Mr. John Wendall, relating to their peti- tioning the General Court &c. the Qualified Inhabitants being as- sembled as aforesd Proceeded & chose the Honble John Quincy Esq'.
