The Question being putt to see if the Town will allow of any Inoculating Hospitals, past in the affirmative 121, against 70.


Small Pox Hospitals. Voted, that Docter Moses Baker have leave to sett up an Inoculating hospital in this Town to be under the Regulations and place appointed by the Selectmen of the Town and as the Law prescribes.


Voted, that Docter Wales have leave of this Town to continue his Hospital for Inoculating under the Limitation & Regulation of the Law & the Selectmen of the Town.


May 15th.


The Meeting for the purpose of Raising men for the Continental Army adjourned from the 24th. of April last brought forward


Come. Dismissd. Voted, to Dismiss the Committee that was chosen the 17th. of Febry last, to hire men for the Continental Army and to choose nine men as a Committee to hire the men and to settle with the former Committee who are to be paid for their services who are hereby Impowered to hire the men as they shall think proper for the Continental Army & make Report at the adjmt.

The Freeholders and other Inhabitants of the Town of Braintree being assembled by adjournment from the fifteenth Day of May inst. for the purpose of hire men for the Army.


allowance to those in the Cont1. Army, the last year. Voted, to allow those persons that was in the Continental Army last May and marched out of New England, who are not engaged in said army at this Time, the sum of Ten pounds for their sufferings the last year, provided they will now engage in said Continental Army for three years.


Come for hireing men. Voted, That the same Committee that was chosen the last meeting be the Committee to hire men for the Continental army untill the adjournment


adjournment. Voted, to adjourn this meeting unto Monday the 9th. Day of June next at 5 oclock in the afternoon at this Place.

Warrants. The Freeholders and other Inhabitants of the Town of Braintree Qualifyd to vote in Town Affairs being assembled at the meeting House in the Middle Parish in said Town Pursuant to Legall Warrants the Particulars are as follows, after a Moderator chosen &c


First, To consider and agree upon a List of those persons be- longing to this Town who are esteamed Inimical to this or the United States.


Secondly, To choose some person who is firmly attached to the American Cause to procure and lay before the Court appointed for the Tryal of those Inimical persons the Evidence that may be had of their Inimical Disposition.


Thirdly, To see if the Town will Instruct their Representative Respecting a Constitution and form of Government for this State.


Fourthly, To choose some persons to prosecute all breaches of the act for preventing monopoly & oppression agreeable to said act.


Fifthly To see if the Town will make any further allowance to the Non Commissioned Officers who marched as a Reinforcement to the Continental Army last faul & last winter under the Com- mand of Capt Nath1 Belcher.

[313] Persons added to the aforesaid list by the Town. Then the following Persons was Nominated & voted to be added to the aforesaid List of Persons esteemed Inimical to the United States viz. Joseph Cleverly second, William Veazie jun'. Henry Cleverly & Thomas Brackett.


Person to procure evidence. Then the votes being called for by the Moderator was brought in for a person to procure the evidence of the Inimical dispositions of the aforesaid persons, and lay them before the Court appointed for the Tryal of them.


Mr. William Penniman was unanimously chosen for the purpose.


Instructions to the Representative. Voted the Town at this present day think it not proper to Form a Constitution and and form of Government, therefore Instruct their Representative to use his influence that the same may be postponed until a future day.


Persons to prosecute breaches of the monopoly act. Then the Town proceeded to the Choice of seven persons to see that the Act . to prevent Monopoly and oppression be not violated in this Town. Viz. Mr. James Clark, Dec". Benj". Bass, Mr. William Penniman, Cap Thomas Newcomb, Capt. John Vinton, Capt. Eliphalet Sawen, Lieut Matthw. Cheesman, who was sworn to the faithfull perform- ance of their Trust.


Then the Town voted not to allow any further sum to the Non Commisioned Officers who was at york under the Command of Cap Belcher. The Moderator Dissolved the meeting.


June 9th.


Come Reported the number of men engaged for the Continental army, since last meeting. adjournment. Then the meeting for Raising men for the Continental Army was brought forward which was adjourned from 22nd may last.


The Committee Reported that they have engaged seven men since the adjournment & have a prospect of engaged several more. Then the meeting was adjourned to monday 23ª of June inst. at four o'Clock P.M. at this Place.


June 23d.

To see if the Town will augment the wages of those that shall be drafted to Reinforce the army at the Northward, agreeable to a Resolve of the General Court : also those ordered to Guard the Continental Stores within the State.

encouragement to those that will engage for 3, mo Voted, this Town will add four pounds ten shillings ap Kalender month in addi- tion to the Continental & States pay to each Non-commissioned officer and soldier who shall well and faithfully perform the Service Required by the sd Resolve of the General Court of the 8th. august inst. for the Time they are in the service.


money to be advanced. Voted, To advance to each of the afore said men Nine pounds, upon his passing muster.


Selectmen to procure the money. Voted, That the Selectmen procure the money & pay the men agreeable to the above vote.


20 s. ¿ mo to be added to those that Guard the contin1. Stores. Voted, To add Twenty shillings per Kalender month to each of the four men that shall engage to guard the Continental stores within this State for the Time they are in service.

The Freeholders and other Inhabitants of the Town of Braintree being assembled by adjournment from the 27th. of August last for the purpose of hireing the men for the Continental Army.


Eben'. Thayer to be Indemnified for not drafting the men for 8 mos. for Contin11. army. Voted, That the Town now raise another Committee to use their utmost endeavours in this Town or elsewhere to procure a sufficient number of men to make up their Quota for the Continental army if possible ; and likewise to Indemnify Colo .. Ebenezer Thayer Ters from any Fine that may be laid on him in Omitting to Draft the men agreeable to a Resolve passd the 15th. day of august last, past. the fore going Vote being Read several times in the Town meeting andwas accepted.

Encouragement for those that Inlist Voted, to supply the families of those persons belonging to this Town who shall In- list into the Continental Army with the necessaries of Life at the Stipulated price during the Time they are in Actual Service.

Assembled pursuant to the above adjournment and adjourned unto monday the first Day of December next at 3, o'Clock P.M.

Commee Report. Assembled pursuant to the above adjourn- ment, the Committee appointed to hire the men for the Conti- nental Army lay'd before the Town a List of the Names of those persons engaged in the army for sd Town with the sum each one Received, also the Time & expences each one of the Committee had expended in hireing the men.


Committee allowance meets. dissolved. Voted, to allow to the Committee twelve shillings a day for each one for the Time they spent out off this Town for the purpose of hireing men, also Voted, to allow Cap Vinton four shillings more per Day in addition to the 12s for the last thirty days he was at the east- ward.

Warrants. The Freeholders and other Inhabitants of the Town of Braintree Qualify'd to vote in Town affairs being Assembled at the Meeting House in the Middle Precinct in said Town, pursuant to Legall Warrants, the particulars are as follows.


After a moderator Chosen &c.


1st. To see if the Town will raise money towards defreying the Charges of said Town the present year.


2nd. To see if the Town will Supply the families of those persons in the Continental Army from this Town with the necessarys of Life at the Stipulated price.


3ª. To act on any other matter or thing the Town may think proper when assembled.


Moderator. Assembled as aforesaid Mr. William Penniman moderator.


£1500 Voted to be assessed. Voted, the sum of Fifteen Hun- dred Pounds be assessed on the polls and Estates within said Town Towards defreying the Town Charges this present year.


The families of those in the Cont1. army to be supplid. Voted, to supply the families of those persons in the Continental Army belonging to this Town with the necessarys of Life at the Stipu- lated price.


Committee to supply the famyes. Voted. To chuse a Commit- tee to provide for the familees of the aforesd. persons such articles as they may want.


Then Voted, that Dec". Ebenezer Adams, Eben'. Thayer, Jun". & Cap Eliphalet Sawen be a Committee who are to draw on the Treasurer for what moneys they may want for the aforesaid pur- pose.


Treasurer to give Security for sums of money Borrowed by the Selectmen. Voted, the Treasurer of this Town give his Security in the Capassaty of Treasurer & for his Successors in said office

After a moderator Chosen &c.


1st. To see if the Town will pay the money to all those persons that have advanced Money for the purpose of hireing men for a Reinforcement for the Continental Army and for Guards within this State, and also hear the Request of any that was Sufferers the Last Campaign.


2ª. Consider and Determine whether the Town will adopt a method for Raising men for the future.


Moderator. Assembled as aforesaid Samuel Niles Esqr. Mod- erator.


Money to be repaid to those that have advancd. it for hireing men & those that have been sufferers to be made whole. Voted, That this Town will Repay the money to all those persons that have paid money for a Reinforcement for the Continental Army & for Guards within this State & also make such reasonable allow- ance to all those that was Sufferers the last Campaign and also to this day, as a Committee who shall be chose for that purpose shall think proper.


Committee to be chose. Voted, To chuse a Committee of seven for the above purpose who are to make Report of the Town upon the annual meeting in March next of what sum shall be allowed to each person for his Sufferings.


The Committee Then Deac". Ebenezer Adams, Capt". Moses Brackett, Cap. Tho®. White Majr. Benja. Hayden Mess. Joseph White Jun'. Matthew Pratt & Joseph Baxter, was chose a Com- mittee for the purpose aforesaid.


men to be hired for the future. Voted, that the men that shall be called for from this Town for the future for a Reinforcement for the Army and for Guards, shall be paid by the Town a Bounty that shall encourage them to Inlist and that there be a Committee appointed to procure the Men when ever there may be orders for any.


Voted, the Committee consist of nine, three in each precinct.


Come for hireing Men from time to time as they may be wanted. Then Capt. Peter B. Adams, Capt Thomson Baxter, Capt. Daniel Arnold, Capt. Thomas White, Mes8. James Thayer, Ichabod Holbrook, William Linsfield Jun'. Mattathias Cheesman & Nath1. Payne, was chose a Committee for the Purpose of hireing men.


Then the meeting was dissolved by a Vote of the Major part of the members then present & declared so by the Moderator.

Warrants. The Freeholders and other Inhabitants of the Town of Braintree Qualify'd to vote in Town Affairs being Assembled at the Meeting House in the Middle precinct in said Town pur- suant to Legall Warrants the particulars are as follows, after a moderator Chosen &c.


first, To see if the Town will make void & Dissanull all the votes that were past at their last meeting on the twenty second instant or such of them as they shall think proper.


Secondly, To see if the Town will chuse a Committee (who shall have it in their power) to give such Bounty's or encourage- ments to the men to be raised as they shall think proper and make a Draught on their Treasurer for the same or adopt any other methods that they shall think proper.


Moderator. Assembled as aforesaid, Samuel Niles Esq'. Mod- erator.


Voted not to act on this Warrant.


Capt". to be Joynd. to the Come. Voted to Reconsider the last Vote so far as to Joyn the Captains that belong to the Militia in this Town to the Committee appointed by the sd. Town at their last meeting for the purpose of hireing men for the future.


1778 February 2d.


Warrants. The Freeholders and other Inhabitants of the Town of Braintree Qualify'd to Vote in Town affairs being assembled at the Meeting House in the Middle precinct in said Town pursuant to Legall Warrants the particulars are as follows after a moder- ator chosen.


Firstly, To see if the Town will approve of the Confederation agreed upon by Congress.


Secondly, To see if the Town will direct their Committee to hire men to Relieve those that are doing duty at Cambridge : Or propose any other method whereby they may be made easy to con- tinue in said service


Assembled as aforesaid, Samuel Niles Esq'. Moderator.


The articles of Confederation & perpetual union between the several States now Represented in the Continental Congress, hav- ing been laid before the Town, was distinctly and Repeatedly read and maturely considered whereupon. Voted, This Town do ap- prove of the said Confederation ; excepting the first clause in the ninth article where the United States in Congress assembled, have the sole and exclusive right and power of Determining on peace & war. The Town propose this amendment. The United States in Congress assembled shall first obtain the approbation of the Legislative Body of each of the United States or the Major part of them before they shall Determine on peace or war.


[319] Voted, that this Town will make up the wages of those Soldiers who are doing duty at Cambridge in Cap. Silas Wilds Compy. six pounds a month from this Time Including what is or shall be allowed by the Court provided they continue in the service to the first day of April next The meeting disolved.

The Anniversary Town Meeting for the Choice of Town Officers &c.


Warrants. The Freeholders and other Inhabitants of the Town of Braintree, Qualify'd. to vote in Town Affairs being assem- bled at the Meeting House in the Middle Precienct in said Town Pursuant to Legall Warrants the particulars are as follows, after a Moderator chosen.


firstly, To Choose all such Town Officers for the ensuing year, as the law directs also a Committee of safety &c. & County Treas- urer.


secondly, To Determine respecting the repairing the Highways within said Town the ensuing year.


thirdly, To Determine whether the Town will consent that any of those persons who have been taken prisoners by any of the fleet or army of the United States shall Reside in this Town.


fourthly, To hear the Report of any Committee or. choose any Committees that may be necessary


fifthly, To act on any other matter or thing the Town may think proper when assembled.


Assembled as aforesaid Samuel Niles Esqr. Moderator.


Town Clerk & Treasurer. Nominated & Chose Ebenezer Thayer Jun'. Town Clerk and also Treasurer for the ensuing year Town to make what allowance to the Treasurer for his services they may think proper at the end of ye year.


Constables allowance. Constables Voted to allow to the Con- stables in each parish four pounds for Collecting Taxes. Then pro- ceeded to the Choice of Constables viz) Joseph Bass was chose & excused by the Town. Abraham Thayer was chose & sworn. March 10th. Noah Thayer was chose & paid his fine in the meet- ing then Lieut. Samuel Bass was chose for the North parish & paid his fine in the meeting, then Hezekiah Thayer was chose for the South parish and paid his fine upon the adjournment as is Recorded there


Voted, To choose seven Selectmen in the Town for the ensuing year.


Voted, two in each Precinct & one at large.


Voted, to pay the Selectmen for their Services the ensuing year

Come for Fish. Come to take care that the fish are not obstruc- ted in Channell. Voted Capt Wales Capt. Jona Thayer & Capt French be a Committee to see the fish are not obstructed in pass- ing to and from the Ponds by Dams and are not taken on any other Days of the Week only the same as was the last year.
