Caleb Hubord to be ther Representative to serv at the grat and general Court this yeare they then also chos four tithing men for this present year that was Nathaniel Wales and John french and Samuel Savill and Samuel Payne. and to look after horsis which goe in the comon they chos gregory Belchor and dependanc french. James Brackitt was chosen the seler of waights and mesurs the same day. -


The freeholders of the Town of Brantry being called together by an order from the tresurer to choos asessors for the Town of Brantry and being called together agreed to choos butt three and they that were chosen then were John Rugles senior John cleverly senior and Wiliam Veasey vpon the 16 of July 1694.


The Town of Brantry or the legall freeholders therof being called together vpon the 24th of December 1694 they voted then on the afirmative five pounds for John belshers widows mainten- ance and thirty shiling to Thomas Revill for keeping Wiliam Dim- blebee and twenty five shilings for the ringing of the bel and sweping the meeting hous in the year 1694 and eight shilings for mending the pound seven shilings to Wiliam Savill for dimblebes cofin and eight shilings to constables for warning the Town and five shilings for the exchang of a Town cow to Samuel speer and ten shilings to Thomas bas for dept fo ringing the bell formerly this tobe raised by rate

The inhabitants of the Towne of Brantry being convened to- gether at a generall Town meeting day apointed to choos Town ofisers & transact publick afayres they then chose for the present year 1695.


Caleb hubord John Rugles senior Levtenant Alexander Marsh ensighn Samuel Peniman seriant beniamin savill Selectmen.


The constables were then chosen also and they are.


Joseph Crosby and gregory belshar


they then chos & voted as followeth.


John Rugles Senior Wiliam veasey and theophilus curtis are a comittee chosen to lett & set all the Towns lands and medow comonly caled the scool lands not exceeding twelv years as they shall see meet ofering it first to any of the Town and not to admitt of the cutting of any wood. this is tobe understood that the land in Mr. fisks improvment is not included hearin and the rest of it is to bee to the use of the Town and its not to be tilled above half at onst. -


Joseph Parmiter was chosen Town tresurer for the same year 1695.


Samuel Tompson senior was also chosen Town clerck for the same year.

It was voted at a Town meeting that wee agreed to goe to con- tribution every Saboth and if Mr. fisk see caus to take vp with what is so given he shall have it all but if not wee ingage that if the contribution fall short of eighty pounds mony we will make it vp at the yeares end and if it be over and above it shall goe tothe vse of the Town and that every man shall give an account to the decons what they gave in. - '


It is agreed by the Town vpon the 4th of March 1695 that the present Selectmen are impowered by the Town to rate the Town for the ringing the bell & sweeping the meeting hous and for the maintaining the nesesitous poor of the Towne that have noe es- tate of ther own and for the mending of the pound and stocks as they see meet or at ther discretion or runing the line from Town to Towne if it be reqwired


The freeholders of the Town of Brantree vpon being caled to- gether the 13 of may 1695 to choos a Representative for to serv at the generall asembly for the year 1695 they then chose Mr. William Rawson as ther Representative for this yeare. -

Mr. John Wilson was chosen commissioner for the towne of Brantry. -


Benjamin Tompson was chosen Clarke who 16th of August 1695 : tooke the clarkes oath before Coll Edmond Quinsey and received at his hand the two Books of towne Records. -

The inhabitants of Brantry being convened together at a gen- erall Towne meeting, to transact concerning the Meeting house &c.

The inhabitants of the towne of Brantrey as above sd convened And proposals made for the Reverend Mr. Moses Fiske his main- tenance in his office of the ministry. It was voted that it should bee by a free contribution.


March 2ª 1695.


It was voted by the inhabitants of Brantrey convened that Mr. Benjamin Tompson having many years kept a grammer School in the sd Towne : should besid the incomes ofthe towne land, and Rents thereof have ten pounds added by way of Salary for keep- ing the grammer School for the yeare 1696. Hee acquitting and fully discharging the towne from all former debts or arrearages to this day on that account Excepting what hee may or can obtaine in any ofthe Rates or Constables hands, which is yet due.

In fields pastures meadow, or in the high ways without Fetters The owners thereof shall pay five Shillings and all Damages. On horses Ridden into fields, and not tedered in the owners ground shall pay 5 Shillings to them that take them up and all damages.

Voted by the inhabitants of Brantry orderly convend That Samuel French and Gregory Belchar for this year were to see to the observance of the aforesd Act against or Relating to horses, and to prosecute the breakers therof as the law directs. Every housholder shall repaire to the towne Clerk and make entry ofthe number and marke of their horses, and pay three pence tothe Clerk, Every horse notso entered by the tenth of April next shall pay 10 Shillings for his neglect, and five shillings y year for going inthe comon.


Noe person shall have liberty to put bit on horse kind in our commons but such persons as are ratable for fivety pounds estate, may have two and no persons shall have more but what are payd for tothe proprietors : this is o' Law concerning horses and horse kind.


July 27 : 1696.

2ª August 1697.


At a publiqe Towne meeting of the inhabitants of Brantry being orderly and lawfully convened Lievt John Baxter was voted mod- erate for that time

The Towne of Brantrey lawfully convend, voted unto Col : Edmund Quinsey five pounds for former service at Court as Rep- resentative of which good part hath beene already payd. -

Voted then that a new School house should bee built in the Road between Clement Cox his house and Gregory Belchars, hard by the white oake tree : The dimensions of the house to bec. twenty foot long the width sixteen foot : and seven foot between joynts.

Voted then that Mr. Caleb Hubbard bee added to the Selectmen in being to erect and finish the said School house : And Rate to bee made in order therunto : And the house to bee finished with all convenient speed.

Voted at the same time that upon the drawing up or uniting the mens seats with the womens in the present alley. Any Roome being left after alterations inthe meeting house any person with consent of the Committee Selectmen may at their own proper charges mak pews for themselves and familys. -

Voted also at the same time that Mr. William Rawson should have priviledge of making a seate for his familie, between or upon the two beams over the pulpit, not darkening the pulpit.


Brantry. Novembr. 1697.


At a publiqe towne meeting of the ffrecholders of the towne of Brantry, convened by warrant Mr. Caleb Hubbard was voted Moderat".


Then it was voted by them that the present Selectmen, should bee assessors of the Towne of the summons proportioned, and set upon them by the act of the Great and Generall Court last past, and that after the same form that the last assessment was for the Country.


Voted also at the same towne that Mr. Benjamin Tompson should have liberty to Cutt downe and export Ten. cords of wood upon and from the towne-School and upon Sheds Neck - hee paying two shillings six pence ap cord : to the Selectmen for the School use.


The present Selectmen directing where it may bee least damage.

Then agreed by the freeholders of Brantry the Subscribers here- unto That wheras there are some persons of Boston that make some claime or pretensions, to some lands, in our Towneship of Brantry aforesaid, and now in our possession by Running of Bounds -


We the subscribers inhabitants of the sd Towne doe therfore mutually agree to defend our ancient Rights and will oppose in a course of Law, those and all those that shall by any means, dis- turbe, molest indeavour to disposesse, any of the sd inhabitants of sd Lands as aforesd, and do promise and engage, each to the other, that wee will defray, all such charges as shall arise, by any such suite or suites concerning the same. As witnesse our hands the day and yeare above written.

The freeholders inhabitants. of the towne of Brantry voted to Mr. Benjamin Tompson Their present Grammer School Maister besides the Revennues of the School lands as formerly the sume of Ten pounds money for his service for the whole yeare instant and proportionably for any part therof. -


It was then and there voted that the old school house should bee removed to the place allotted at a former towne meeting Oct 22d 1697 or on the land of The ffrenches if attainable or neere to the best conveniency.

At a Publick meeting of the Town ye Inhabitants being convened made choice of Captain John Wilson to be moderator at that time


May 15th. 1699.


Mr. Caleb Hobart Deacon Nathaniel Wales. Lievt Samuel Pen- iman Ensigne Benjamin Savel. Serjeant James Bracket were chosen to erect & finnish a new Schoole House.


Then also voted that the said Schoole House should be built in ye Road, between Clement Cocks house & Gregory Belchers, hard by the White oak Tree the dimentions of the house to be Twenty foot long Sixteen foot wide. and Seven foot between Joynts

Voted that a Rate be made (by the Selectmen in beeing) in order to the building said Schoole House. & that it bee finnished with all convenient Speed.

Voted that Captain Wilson be added to the Selectmen in beeing to treat & agree with a gramer School master.


Voted that the Selectmen in being shall treat with Josiah Owen about Ebenezor Owens destracted daughter and give him Twen- ty pounds money provided he gives bond under his hand to cleare the Town (for ever of said girle : Ten pounds of said summe to. be payd him at the first yeares end &. five pounds y annum : the two following yeares successively. -

Voted that persons liveing remote shall have leave & liberty (upon there own cost & charge) to erect & build a shed or sheds. (neare the meeting house) for to set & secure their horses in : and that the Selectmen now in being or that here after may bee from year to yeare sucsessively are hereby impowered to order out such places to said persons as may be most beneficiall & least detre- mentall
