Constables allowance. Then Voted to allow the Constables Sixty Pounds each in Currancy of the old Emission for their ser- vices in Collecting the Taxes the ensuing year as usual.
Then Micah Thayer Presented Capt. Thomas Newcomb to the Town To Serve Constable in his room the Town then Excepted of Capt Newcomb upon condition that the said Thayer be Bound for him as usually has been the practice in this Town, which said Thayer Consented to.
Constables Excepted. Then William Field Presented Ebenezer Newcomb to serve Constle. in his Room who was Excepted by the Town upon the same Termes as was Capt Newcomb which said Field consented to.

The Freeholders and other Inhabitants of the Town of Braintree being assembled by adjournment from Febry 5th. Voted, that the Meeting be again Adjourned, accordingly the meeting adjourned to the day of the anniversary Meeting in April next for the Choice of Governor, Lieut. Governor &c
March 13th.
The Freeholders and other Inhabitants of the Town of Brain- tree Qualified By Law, to vote in Town affairs being assembled at the meeting House in the Middle Precenct in said Town Pursuant to a Legal Warrant, the particulars, are as followeth (viz) after a moderator Chosen.
First, to hear an address, to the Inhabitants of this Common- wealth Framed in the House of Representatives Feb. 26th. 1781, and ordered to be Read Publicly in Town meeting.
Secondly, To advize and Determine on such measures as shall appear to the Town best calculated to compleat their proportion of men for the army agreeable to a Resolve of the General Court of the 26th day of Februry Last Directing that the Inhabitants be put into classes for the purpose of filling up the army.
Thirdly, To hear the Report of any Committee or Choose any Committees the Town may think Proper.
Forthly, To act upon any other matter or thing the Town may think proper.
Moderator. Assembled as aforesaid Maj' Stephen Penniman Moderator.
Voted, That the Taxes of £200,000 now in the Hands of the Collectors (which sum was raised for the Purpose of hiring men for the Army and procuring Beef) that the Collectors be directed to collect but one half of said Tax from each individual, until the further order of the Town providing the Town shall adopt the meathod of Classing the inhabitants for the purpose of procuring men for the army.
Voted, to Class the Inhabitants agreeabl to the above men- tioned Report, and that any Class after properly exerting them- selves to procure a man for the army, shall not be held to pay any more than the highest price that may be given to procure a man, and for that the Town Will Procure the man for said Class, and that those who have paid the whole of the above mentioned Tax shall have one half of it refunded back to them again untill the Town shall order otherwise. The business of the meeting being finished, the moderator Desolved the meeting.

The Freeholders and other Inhabitants of the Town of Braintree, Being assembled by adjournment from March the sixth day which was the anniversary March Meeting and allso by adjournment from March 6th. which meeting was held by adjournment from Feby 5th. 1781. For the March meeting The Moderator not being present.
Moderator. Coll' Ebenz' Thayer Jur. was chosen Moderator.
Part of taxes remitted. Voted, That the Tax of Two Hundred Thousand Pounds which was assessed for the Purpose of hiring Soldiers and procuring Beef for the Army, that every individual who is taxed in said assessment shall be finally Discharged from said Tax by paying into the Hands of the Collector one half of what he she or they may be set at in said Tax.
John Williams Listed for Boston held to serve for Braintree Then Capt Joseph Baxter one of the Towns Committee to hire Soldiers for The Continental Army Reported to the Town that one John Williams had engaged as a soldier to serve in the army for three years or during the War and that he had engaged to serve for the Town of Boston to be reckoned one of their Quota men of the Army, and that said John Williams Did by Law Belong to the Town of Braintree, and that he the said Joseph in behalf of the Town of Braintree, Laid in his Clame for the Privilege of said Williams that he should answer as a soldier for the Town of Brain- tree and was opposed by the Committee of the Town of Boston and by said Com. was drove to every extremity to prove the justice of his clame to said Williams but finally obtained him, then the Com- mittee of Boston Requested of said Baxter fifteen Guinies which they had given said [356] John Williams as a Bounty said Baxter Reports that he denied Complying with said request but told the Committee that he would Lay the afare before his Town to

act upon as they should think proper, said Baxter Desiring to know the minds of the Town upon that afare.
The Vote was put whether the Town would Order that the said Boston Committee should have their fifteen Guinies Refunded back to them by the Town of Braintree, and passed in the negative
adjournement. The meeting adjourned to the Anniversary Meet- ing in May next, 3 O'clock P.M.
Moderator. The other meeting which stood adjourned to this day as before mentioned, The Moderator not being present Colo Ebenz". Thayer Jr. was Chosen Moderator, night coming on this meeting adjourned to the day of the anniversary meeting in May next at 3 of the Clock P.M. at this place.
May 17th.
The Freeholders and other Inhabitants of the Town of Brain- tree being assembled By adjournment from the Second day of April Last which meeting was then held by adjournment from March 6th. & Febry 5th. 1781.
Surveyor of Highways. Nathaniel Golover was nominated and chosen Surveyor of Highways, the present year.
Voted, that any person who shall Provoid materiels for the re- pairing of Mores Farm Bridg (so called) and Deliver the same to Lieut David Holbrook to his Acceptance they shall be allow'd the Value thereof out of their highway tax this present year.
Constables Excepted. Lieut. Simeon Thayer, Presented his son Simeon Thayer Jr to serve Constable This Present year in his Room, the Town then Excepted of Simeon Thayer Jur. upon Con- dition that his Father be bound for him as usually has been the practice of this Town, which his Father Then present Consented to do.
Committee Voted, that the present Selectmen Collo. Ebenz". Thayer Jur. and Moses French be a Committee to Confer with Doct. Moses Baker Capt". John Vinton & Others Respecting their se- curity being orders for money which they had Lent to the Town and Report to the Town at their next meeting
Adjournment. Voted, that the above two meetings be Adjourned to Monday the forth day of June next at one of the Clock P.M. at this place.
May 17th.
The Freeholders and other Inhabitants of the Town of Braintree Qualify'd according to the Constitution of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, to vote in the choice of a Representative being as- sembled at the meeting House in the Middle Precenct in said Town, for the purpose of Choosing one, or more suitable Persons to rep- resent them in the Great & General Court This Present year, Voted, to have but one Representative. Votes were then given in for one Representative, the Votes being Carefully Look'd over it appeared that Richard Cranch Esqr. had the choice by the whole of the Votes given in.

The Freeholders and other Inhabitants of the Town of Braintree being assembled by adjournment from from May 17th. to act upon two Warrants, one December 29th. 1780, and the other March 5th. 1781, which stood adjourned to this day Voted to pass over the third Article in the warrant of the 19th. of Decem".
Voted, to pass over the Third Artical in the Warrant of the 5th. of March.
allowance to the Treasurer. Voted, to allow unto Colº. Eben- ezer Thayer Jur. for his Service as Treasurer, for two years past five Pounds for Each year to be paid him in Currency at the Ex- change of seventy five for one, allowed to the Treasurer on Set- tlemt. January.
Committees Report. Voted, to accept the Report of the Com- mittee that settled with the former treasurer and transferred the Books which is Recorded in the Treasurers Book Vol 2ª. Fol 316
Committee to settle with the Treasurer. Voted, That Colo1. Ebenz'. Thayer Jun'. Thomas Penniman Esqr. and Capt Peter Boilston Adams be a Committee to settle with the Treasurer, at the close of the present year and to report to the Town.
Surveyors. Decon Samuel Holbrook was Chosen Surveyor of Highways in the Room of Micah Wild who refused serving.
July, 2ª.
The Freeholders and other Inhabitants of the Town of Braintree, Qualified by Law to vote in Town Affairs Being assembled at the meeting House in the Middle Precenct in said Braintree Persuant to a Legal Warrant the Particulars are as followeth (viz)
After a moderator Chosen.
First, to See what meathod the Town will adopt to Rais Soldiers for the defence of Rhode island agreeable to a Resolve of the General Court of the 16th. day of June 1781, and also to determine what meathod the Town will come into for raising men to join the Army at West Point. Secondly, to See what meathod the Town will adopt for procuring the hard money and Corn promised to those men who served the Army six months the last year.
Thirdly, To Rais money to Defray the necessary Charges of the Town.
Forthly, To See if the Town will Lease any of their Lands that are now under Lease for the Term of two years from the time of Leasing Provided the Leases Will Quit their leases at the time of their taking of their present Croop and to persue shuch meathods, for that purpose as the Town shall think Proper.
Fifthly, to hear the Report of any Committee or to Choose any Committee the Town shall think Proper.
Sixthly, To Act upon any other matter or thing the Town shall think Proper. Assembled as afforsaid Colo" Ebenz". Thayer Jr. Moderator.

Moderator. Voted, that Majr Stephen Penniman be moder- ator for this meeting in the Room of Colo11. Ebenz". Thayer Jur. who was absent.
Vote for Classing Voted, to adopt the meathod of Classing the Inhabitants for the purpose of Raising men for the army agreeable to a Resolve of the General Court June 30th. 1781.
Committee to Class the Inhabitants Voted, that Mess". Colo11. Edmund Billings, Capt Jona. Webb, Mr. Azariah Faxon, Lieut. David P. Hayward, Majr. Seth Turner, and Capt. Elisha Wales, be a Committee to join with the Present Selectmen in Classing the Inhabitants for the Purpose of Raising men agreeable to said Resolve and one other Resolve Requiring Five men, to go to Rhod- iland.
Conditions for the Classes. Voted, that any Class after prop- erly exerting themselves to procure a man and fail of procuring a man seasonably, that such Class shall not be held to pay any more Than the Highest price given by any class, in the Town, and for that the Town will procure The man for said Class.
Adjournment. Voted, To adjourn this meeting unto the 23d. day of July Inst at three of the Clock in the afternoon at this place.
July 23ª.
The freeholders and Other Inhabitants of the Town of Brain- tree Being assembled by adjournment from July ninth &c.
Committee to procure a subaltern. Voted, the Selectmen be a Committee to procure a Subaltern Required to go with the Soldiers to be raised by this Town to join the Army at West point for three months campain
Adjournment. Voted, to adjourn the meeting unto the six day of August next, at three of the clock in the afternoon at this place.

Voted, that Messrs Decon Daniel Arnold, Majr. Stephen Penni- man and Mr. Joseph White be a Committee to procure said Beef.
Selectmen to hire a Collector Voted, that the Selectmen pro- cure some sutable Person to Collect, the Hard money Tax now to be assessed upon the Polls and Estates in the middle Precenct on the best terms they can for the Town, for that Capt. Thomas Newcomb whose Right it was to Collect said Tax is now in the Army.

The Freeholders and other Inhabitants of the Town of Braintree Qualified by Law to vote in Town Affairs being assembled at the meeting House in the middle Precenct in said Braintree persuant to a Legal Warrant, The particulars are as followeth viz.

First, to see if the Town will direct their Treasurer in what manner he shall Call upon and settle with the several Collecttors within this Town who now have in their Hands Tax Bills for Paper currancy that are un Settled and to direct in what manner the Towns Orders that are drawn upon the Credit of said Bill shall be discharged

Voted, That the Treasurer Call upon and settle with the several deficient Collectors (for what they are behind in collecting) in the manner prescribed by a Resolve of the general Court of July Last.
Voted, To excuse Capt. Thomas French from Collecting the Towns Tax now in his Hands which Tax was assessed in old Con- tinental Currancy.
Voted, that Mess®. Decon Daniel Arnold, Maj' Stephen Penni- man and Mr. Joseph White Jur. be A Commit to procure Collec- tors to Collect the said Town Tax now in the Hands of Capt. Thom8. French and the State Taxes now in the Hands of the Se- lectmen.
Voted, that the Class Nomber six whereof William Glover is Chearman for their deficiency in procuring a man to serve, in the Continental Army for three years or during the war, that said Class be Taxed and Proceeded with agreeable to the Resolves of the General Court Respecting deficient Towns & Classes.
Voted, that the Committee for hiring the three years men that they with the Selectmen Petition the General Court for an allow- ance to this Town for one man on account of Abraham Tower who is now in the Army engaged for three years. The meeting Dis- solved.

Anno Domini 1782. The anniversary Town Meeting for the Choice of Town Officers.
The freeholders and other Inhabitants of the Town of Braintree being assembled at the Meeting House in the Middle Precenct in said Braintree Pursuant to a Legal Warrant the particulars are as followeth (viz) After a Moderator chosen.
First, To Choose all Such Town Officers for the ensuing year as the Law directs
Secondly, To see if the Town will order their Treasurer to give security in behalf of the Town for specie to those persons that have obligations against the Town for paper Currancy and Deter- mine the time when said obligations shall Bare Date
Thirdly, To see what meathod the Town will take Respecting the Land Belonging to the Town as the present Leases are now expiring.
Forthly, To Rais such sum or sums of money as may be thought Proper to discharge such of the Towns Debts as may be called for the present year, and for other necessary Charges, of the Town.
Fifthly, To hear the Report of Class No 6, Whereof William Glover is Chear Man and to Act thereon as the Town may think proper.
Sixthly, To choose a Committee to take care of the fish and Regulate the time for fishing as they may think proper.

Moderator. Assembled as aforesaid Honle. Sam" Niles Esq'. Moderator.
Clerk & Treasr. Then the Town made choice of Moses French for their Clerk and Treasurer
Constables. The Town then Proceeded to choose Constables Gaius Thayer was chosen Constable for the North Precenct, Ebenez". Cleark Ditto, for the Middle Precenct and Capt Joseph Tower Ditto for the South Precenct
The Town then Voted to take under consideration the second artical mentioned in the Warrant.
The second article in the Warrant acted upon Voted, To choose a Committe of seven men to settle the affair mentioned in said artical and that the Treasurer be and he is hereby directed to give security in behalf of the Town upon the order of said Com- mittee (and whereas sundry persons who have lent money to the Town and at the time of lending their money they then took the Selectmen's security in behalf of the Town and on a future Day from that time gave up thos securities and instead thereof took notes from the Treasurer in behalf of the Town [360] now it appears that by the depreciation of money the shifting said notes is attended with great Loos to the Creditors as it may be, and as that afair is to come under the Consideration of said Committee) the Town then
Voted, that If the Person agrieved and the Committee cannto agree then in that case the Committee be allowed to refer the mat- ter to three persons belonging to some other Town to be chosen or agreed upon by the Committee and the agrieved Persons and that the judgment of the said Referees shall be decicive.
Committee to Regulate the Treasury &c. Voted, To Choose said Committee by written votes and in that way were Chosen, Capt Peter B. Adams, Decon Ebenz". Adams North Precenct. Colo11 Ebenz' Thayer Jur. & Majr. Stephen Penniman, Middle Pre- cenct Mess®. Willim. Linfield 3d. & Capt. Stephen Wales, South Precenct. Mr. Azariah Faxon at Large.
Voted, that the Treasurer Sell to the best advantage that he can for the Town all the Paper Currency of the New Emission in his possession, that belongs to the Town.
Voted, to adjourn the meeting untill to morrow morning at 9 of the Clock at this place.
