The Anniversary Town meeting for the Choice of Representa- tives
Warrants The Freeholders and other Inhabitants of the Town of Braintree Qualified by the Constitution to vote in the Choice of Representatives pursuant to Legal Warrants the particulars are as follows, viz To elect one or more persons to Represent them in the Great and General Court, to be convened and held in the State House in Boston on the twenty eighth day of May.
Representative. Assembled as aforesaid and Voted to Choose One Representative only, the Votes being brought in carefully sorted and counted it appeared that Colo Ebenezer Thayer jun". was chosen by a majority of forty four votes, the meeting was then dissolved.

The Freeholders and other Inhabitants of said Town Qualified to Vote in Town affairs being assembled pursuant to Legall War- rants the particulars are as follows (viz) after a Moderator chosen to see if the Town will join the other Country Town in this County in a petition to the General Court, Requesting that they be sett off into a Seprate County from the Town of Boston. Assembled as aforesaid Decn. M. French, moderator.
Petition for a Seperate County. Voted, that this Town will join the Country Town in this County in a petition to the General Court Requesting that they may be made into a seperate County from the Town of Boston, and it was Voted, that the Representative be im- powered to Petition the General Court In behalf of this Town.
Highway by Edward Faxon accepted upon Conditions. The Selectmen offered to the Town the Bounds of a Highway which they had laid out nigh to Edward Faxons land, which was accepted provided the Town shall not be at any expense for the land or Fencing the same which is Recorded on the next page.
[67] Townway by Edwd. Faxons. The Report of the Select- men that Laid out a Town way nigh to Edward Faxons land is as follows (viz.) At the Request of a number of Persons Inhabitants of the South Precinct of the Town of Braintree a Road has been laid out as follows, (Viz.) beginning at the Town way that leads from Braintree to Bridgewater near to Mr. Edward Faxons House at the southwest corner of Colo. Jonathan Bass's land one Rod & a

half in weidth on said Faxons land to the Southwest corner of said Bass' land Then Westerly on said Faxons land (South of a Wal- nut Tree) to the bars in the drift way (standing in the line) be- tween the aforesaid Faxons land and Capt". Jonathan Thayers land, then on said Thayer's land a westerly course to the South east end of the bridge that crosses middle swamp (so called) to which place it was formerly lay'd out and is now Improved, also a Road Two Rods in weidth beginning oppisite the first mentioned station after crosing the Town way extending Southeast to the Dividing line between Mr. John Hunts & Snells pasture where it will Intersect with the line between the Countys of Suffolk and Plymouth.

The Freeholders and other Inhabitants Qualified to vote in Town affairs being assembled by adjournment from April 7th.
Report of the Committee that settled with the Treasurer The Report of the Committee that was appointed to settle with the Former Treasurer and likewise to Transfer the Books and other papers from the former Treasurer and Clerks office to the present Treasurer and Clerk, was Read and Accepted and is Recorded in the Treasurer Book Folº. 388 & 389.
Votes for a County Treasurer. Votes, for a County Treasurer were given in sealed up and delivered to Mr Gaius Thayer one of the Constables of the town.
Treasurer to Issue execution agst. N. Holbrook. Voted that the Treasurer be directed to issue an Execution against Nathaniel Holbrook who was a Collector of Town Taxs in the year 1785 pro- vided he do not compleat his collect and pay into the Treasury the Ballance that is now due from him in one month from this day.
Voted, £1000. Voted, to Raise the sum of One Thousand pounds, to pay Debts and defray charges of the Town the en- suing year and that the same be assessed on the Polls and Estates lying within the Town as soon as may be.
Selectmen & Assessors to agree with Collectors. Voted, that the Selectmen and assessors be impowered to farm-out the Collection of all Taxs that may be assessed the ensuing year. to the Lowest bidder or bidders he or they giving bonds to the Town to the sat- isfaction of the assessors.
Selectmen to Fence the Town land if they think proper. Voted, tliat the Selectmen view the Town's land where the house for the poor now stands and if they think it expedient to have the same Fenced this Season in the cheapest manner.
Allowance to Capt. Wild taking care of Poor. Voted, to allow Capt". Silas Wild six pounds for his trouble in providing neces- sarys for the Poor and looking after and taking cair of them the year past, & Up to this day. Voted the Selectmen be empowered

to agree with some suitable person to provide for and take cair of the poor the ensuing year.

Warrants. The Freeholders and other Inhabitants of the Town of Braintree Qualified to vote in town affairs being assembled pur- suant to Legal Warrants the particulars are as follows, after a Moderator chosen.
First, To Consider and Determine what measures the Town will adopt to discharge those executions that now are or may be against the Town.
Secondly, to Direct the Treasurer how to proceed with those who are Indebted for Rent or in any other account.
thirdly, to see if the Town will direct the Selectmen to make Restitution to any Individual or Individuals who may be personally called upon by any of the Town's Creditors.
Assembled as aforesaid Decn. Moses French Moderator.
Treasurer to borrow money. Voted, the Treasurer be Impow- ered to borrow the money to Discharge the Execution In favor of Mr. Fletcher, which is now in the hands of Mr. H. Vose a corioner provided he can.
Treasurer to prosecute all those that are Indebt in one Mº. & Issue Executions. Voted, that the Treasurer be directed to call on all persons who are Indebted to the Town, and any Collector of Town Taxs, who doth not compleat his collection and settle the same in one month from this day. The Treasurer is Directed to Issue his Execution against him, all other persons who are Indebt- ed & dont discharge their debts in the same time, the Treasurer is Directed to proceed with them in a Due Corse of Law.
Selectmen make restitution Voted, that the Selectmen be Im- powered to make full Restitution to any persons who may be Im- prison'd or have any of his property taken from him to Discharge any of the Debts due from the said Town of Braintree
A motion was made and seconded to choose a Committee to In- form Mr. Fletcher of the provision the Town had made to dis- charge his Execution. accordingly, Eben'. Thayer Jun. Peter B. Adams Esqr. and Capt Silas Wild was chose a Comm. for that purpose.
Then the meeting was dissolved.

The anniversary Town meeting for the Choice of Town Officers &c March 2ª. 1789.
The Freeholders and other Inhabitants of the Town of Braintree Qualifyd. by Law to vote in Town affairs being legally assembled at the meeting house in the Middle Precinct of said Town for the Choice of Town Officers and for the transacting the other affairs of said Town the Particulars whereof as inserted in the Warrants are as follows.
After a Moderator chosen.
[71] First, To Choose all such Town Officers for the present year as the Law directs also to Receive in the Votes for a County Treasurer.
Secondly, To Raise such sum or sums of money for the use of said Town as they shall think proper when assembled.
Thirdly To direct in what manner the Highways shall be Repaired the Ensuing year.
Fourthly, To see if the Town will accept of the way (as a Town way) as the same is now fenced leading from Lieut Barnabas Clarks Mill to the Revd. Mr Tafts house.
Fifthly, To see if the Town will give any premium for Crows heads, that shall be kill'd in said Town the ensuing year.
Sixthly, To hear the Report of any Committee or chuse any Committee the Town may think proper when assembled.
Moderator Assembled as aforesaid Peter Boylston Adams Esq'. was chosen Moderator.
Town Clerk Town Treasurer Voted, to chuse the Town Clerk by Ballot, votes being brought in sorted and Counted, Ebenezer Thayer Jun'. was chosen by a Majority of 30 votes. Then he was Nominated and Chose Town Treasurer.
Selectmen Voted, to Choose three selectmen the Ensuing year, then Capt" John Hall, Maj' Stephen Penniman and Mr. Joseph White Jr was chosen.

Then Dec". Jonathan Webb secd. Lieut. Seth Spear, Capt". Nehemiah Holbrook, Lieut. Ambros Salisbury Lieut Nathaniel Niles & Capt" Elisha Wales was chosen.
Then Messrs Daniel Baxter, James Holbrook & Barnabas Clark, was chosen constables, a motion was made & seconded that this meeting be adjourned to Thursday the 12th. instant at 12, o clock at noon accordingly it was voted and adjourned to that Time.

March 12th.
The Freeholders and other Inhabitants of the Town of Braintree being assembled by adjournment from the second instant, the Clerk Read the Warden act.
A disorder for any Person to stand on the seats. Voted, that the Members draw into the seats and that it shall be considered as a disorder for any person to stand on them.
Decn Webb and Lieut. Spear excused from serving as assessors. The Moderator informed the meeting that Dec". Webb desired to be excused from serving as an assessor The Town Voted to se- cure Dec". Webb from serving. Then Lieut Spear Requested to be excused from Serving as an Assessor, the Town Voted to ex- cuse him.
Assessors for the North precinct. The votes being brought in and sorted, Mr. Gaius Thayer & Lieut Elijah Veazie were declared to be chosen. Then Mr. Gaius Thayer desired to be excused, voted not to excuse him, he renewed his request, then Voted to Excuse him. Votes being brought in and sorted it was declared that Capt" Thomson Baxter was chosen who Requested to be excused, but the Town would not excuse him.
Wardens. Voted, to choose six Wardens for the ensuing year. Mess. Seth Spear, Matthew Pratt, Solomon Thayer secd. Jesse Pratt, Frederick Reed, & Samuel Bass Esqr. was chosen Wardens. [73] Fire Wardens. Mr. Joseph Hunt Seth Mann jun'. & Atkins Clark.

Highways-to be Repaired - Voted, to repair the Highways the ensuing year by a Tax and a single Poll be taxed three shil- lings and the Estates in proportion and there be allowed three shillings for one Days labour on the ways and other Labour in the usual proportion. Surveyors chosen.

Instructions to the Selectmen and Surveyors. Voted, the Se- lectmen make out the Districts and Deliver them to the Surveyors of Highways in the month of April and that the Surveyors make a Return to the Assessors in the month of October if there be any who neglect or Refuse to work out their Taxs on the highways and that they be assessed for the same as usual.
Fence Viewers. Mess. Edmund Billings, Samuel Bass, Na- thaniel Wales jun". Atherton Thayer, Isaac Spear and Jonathan Wales was chosen Fence Viewers.

Bridge by Dec™. Webbs, to be widen Voted, That the Selectmen direct the Surveyors in the North Precinct to Repair and widen the Bridge by Dec". Webbs
Premium for Crows heads. Voted, a premium of one shilling head for all the old Crows and sixpence o head for young ones that shall be killed within this Town for six months from this time the heads of the birds to be carried to the Selectmen they to take an acct. of them and then to distroy them and may oblige the person that brings the heads to swear that they were kill'd within the Town and within the Time allowed if they please.
Adjournment Voted that this meeting be adjourned to the first monday in April next at one o'clock afternoon.

[75] Selectmen to give direc" to Surveyors for Clearing and wid- en the roads. Voted, the Selectmen give particular directions to the Surveyors of high ways, that are on the Country Road from Stough- ton line near the Revd. Mr Briggs meeting house to Penns hill to cause all incumbrances to be Removed out of said Road and where it may be thought necessary to remove any Fence for widening the Road or any other of the Country Roads or Town Ways, the Selectmen shall give particular directions for removing the same before any Surveyor shall presume to do it.
Treasurer to settle wh J. Vinton. Voted, the Treasurer settle with Capt". Vinton for the Balle. he has ow'd the Town since he was Treasurer.

Town way Lieut. Bar. Clarks mill. The Committee appointed to view the way leading from Lieut. Clarks mill to the Country Road by Revd. Mr Tafts Report that they have viewed the same and are of the opinion that the sd Road ought to be accepted by the Town as a Town way on the following conditions (viz) that the owners of the Gristmill shall be at the expence of making & keeping in repair ye. sª Road so far as the pond shall extend each way or flow at any time; That the Road be opened twenty feet wide as it was purchased by Dec". Peter Thayer, Lieut. Joshua Hayward & that the Labour on said Road shall not exceede twenty days work in a year to be done in the following manner, namely twelve days work from the Road leads by Revd. Mr. Tafts & eight days work from the Road leading by Lieut B Clarks

First, To see if the Town will give a premium for Black birds, that shall be kill'd in said Town for a limited time.
Secondly, To Determine whether the Town will refund the money to those who advanced it for the purpose of hiring men for Rein- forcement for the Continenal Army during the last war. Assem- bled as aforesaid.

May 14th.
The Freeholders and other Inhabitants of the Town of Braintree, being assembled by adjournment from the 6th. of April to compleat the choice of Town Officers.
Fish Commee. Jonathan Holbrook and Josiah French Refused to serve on the Committee appointed to see that the Fish are not obstructed in their running to and from the ponds. Then the Town made choice of Mes'. Stephen Penniman, Solomon Thayer secd. and Atherton Thayer to be joined by those was before chosen (as Recorded in page 64) to be a Committee to appoing days for the catching of the fish and to prevent their being taken on other days and to see that the passage ways are keept oppen.
Collectors. Voted, to Let out the Collecting of all the Taxes that may be assessed on the Inhabitants the ensuing year at the Lowest bidder the Collectors giving Bonds with Bondsmen to the acceptance of the assessors. Lieutenant Daniel Baxter bid of the North Precenct, taxs to Collect at one penny on the pound.
The Town then made choice of him as a Collector he to give bonds, to the acceptance of the assessors.
Mr. Gaius Thayer bid of the Middle Precinct tax to collect at three pence three farthings on the pound. The Town then made choice of him as a Collector, he to give bonds as above.
Mr. John French bid of the South Precinct Tax to collect at four pence three farthings on the pound. he was chosen a Collec- tor upon his giv& bonds.
Treasurer to call on Collect. Voted, that the Treasurer pay Cap. Crane out of the first money he may Receive from the Col- lectors & he is directed to call on them for some immediately.
Adjournment Voted, to adjourn this meeting to the first Mon- day in august 5 o Clock afternoon.

Anniversary Town Meeting for the choice of Representative.
Warrant The Freeholders and other Inhabitants of the Town of Braintree Qualified by the Constitution to Vote for Representa- tive being assembled pursuant to Legal Warrants the particulars are as follows (viz) To elect one or more persons to Represent them in the General Court to be convened and held in the State House in Boston on Wednesday the twenty seventh day of May next or such other place as the General Court may order.
Representative Assembled as aforesaid and voted to send one Representative only.
