Wardens. The Warden Act being Read proceeded to the Choice of Wardens. Mest. Jonathan Rawson, Jonathan Baxter, David Person Hayward, William Penniman, Jonathan Wales, Elisha Wales were chosen.


Labour on Highways £7 = 10 ar Day. Voted, To Reconsider the Voted that passed March 14th. for the price of Labour on the High Ways. Then Voted a Days Work on Highways shall be sett at seven pounds, Ten shillings & all other Labour in the usual Proportion.

Delegate to meet in Convention Then it was moved & Seconded that the Town should choose a Delegate to meet in Convention on Wednesday next for the purpose of Compleating the Constitution or Form of Government.


Voted, to chuse a Delegate by written Votes


Then the Honble. Joseph Palmer Esqr. was chosen for that pur- pose.


Collectors allow for Counterfeit Bills they Recd for taxes. Voted, That Zebah Hayden be allowed out of the Town Treasurer Fifteen pounds for a Counterfitt Bill he says he Recd. for taxes the Person he Recd. of unknown.


also Voted, Capt" John Hall Jun be allow'd Eighteen pounds, for one bill he Recd. for Taxs being a Counterfitt Bill, the Person he Recd. it off unknown


Persons Compld. off for catching Alewives. The Committee ap- pointed by the Town 14th. March last to see the Fish are not obstructed in their Running to & from the Ponds, Report to the Town the names of a number of Persons who have violated the act by catching Alewives on a day not allowed off by the Commit- tee.


Come appointd to settle with them. The Town thought proper to chuse a Committee to mitigate the fines of all such as was will- ing to settle with the Committee as it was the first Offence. Then Colº. Bass, Maj Penniman & Colº. Billings was chosen a Commit- tee for that purpose.


Then the meeting was adjourned to the next town meeting day.


June 19th.


Warrants. The Freeholders and other Inhabitants of the Town of Braintree being assembled pursuant to legall Warrants the par- ticulars are as follows


First after a Moderator Chosen, To Determine upon the most Expiditious way of Raising the men required of this Town by a late Resolve of the General Court.


Secondly, to see if the Town will Petition the General Court for . Liberty to Inlist such of their Townsmen as are willing to engage in the service required by the aforesaid Resolve who are now doing duty at the Castle & Governours Island.


Moderator. Assembled as aforesaid the Hon. Samuel Niles Moderator.


Voted, The Towns Committtee hire the men Required on the best Terms they can


Come to hire the men Voted, to Excuse Capt". Adams from serving as a Committee man to hire men & then made choice of Lieut James Clark in his Roome by written votes.


Voted, that the Committee appointed to hire men Petition the Gen1. Court, In behalf of the Town for Liberty to Inlist such men

Warrants The Freeholders & other Inhabitants of the Town of Braintree being assembled at the meeting house in the middle Precinct in sd Town Pursuant to Legall Warrants the perticulars are as follows, after a Moderator chosen.


First, To Determine upon what method the Town will take to Raise the number of men Required by the Resolves of the General Court of June 5th. 22ª-23d and also to act on any other matter or Thing the Town may think proper when assembled.


Moderator. Assembled as aforesaid, Jonathan Bass, Esq". moderator. Voted, To make an offer to such persons as will en- gage to go into the Service. after a considerable debate upon the matter it was Voted, to give each man One Thousand Dollars as a Bounty also half a Bushel of Corn for Every Day from the Time they march to the time they are discharged or leave the army & also half a bushel of Corn for every Twenty miles they shall be from home when discharged and also Voted, that the Town will pay them the Forty shillings a mo promised by the State in hard money If the soldiers enable The Town to Receive the sª 40/- from the State, unless it will best sute the soldiers to Receive it from the State themselves.


Selectmen to procure Corn for pay. Voted, the Selectmen should give Security to the persons that shall engage pursuant to the foregoing vote & also the Selectmen Procure the Corn at Har- vest & Store it for the men until they return.


Gen Palmers present. General Palmer generously gave into the hands of the moderr. One Thousand & Eighty Dollars to be equally divided among the thirty six men that shall first engage in the six months service as a Reinforcement to the Continental Army - for which the thanks of the Town was Voted him.


[344] The Familys of such men as shall engage for the Town of six months shall be supply'd by the Selectmen with Corn, Wood or such other articals, as they stand in need off which is to be charge & Reducted from the wages of that person which is to be paid him in Corn upon his Returning home.

The Town being assembled by adjournment from June 27 -


Money lent to the Town not to be Taxd. Voted, That those persons who have the Treasurers Notes for money Borrow'd by the Selectmen for the use of the Town, and such as have now lent and shall lend the Town money to Procure the men Required by the Resolves of the General Court of June 5th. 22d .- 23d. - shall be ex- empted from any Tax for the same -

The Town being assembled by adjournment from June 28th.


31 men Inlisted. The Committee Reported that they had In- listed thirty one men & that there was a prospect of Inlisting the other 5 men which is wanting to compleat the first 36 men call for & likewise a part or all the nine men Required by the aforesaid Resolve of June 23 -


Gen. Palmer gave the same to the 9 as to the 36. General Palmer, generously made the same offer to the nine men as he did to the 36, men - that was thirty dollars each for which the Thanks of the Town was again Voted him.


Meeting adjourned to Wednesday July 5th. 3, o'clock P.M.


July 5th.


A small part of the Town being assembled by adjournment from June 30 - Voted to proceed to Business.


Officers Pay. after a Long Debate Voted that the Officers pay including the States pay be made equal to a Private.


Soldiers for 3 months - their pay - Voted, To give each sol- dier that shall engage in the service for three months pursuant to the Resolve of the General Court of June 22d. Five hundred Dol- lars as a Bounty, half a Bushel of Corn or the Value thereof for every day from the Time they march to the time they are dis- charged or leave the army, also the same pay a Day for every Twenty miles, they shall be from home when discharged and the States Pay.


Money to be procured Voted, the Selectinen procure the money to pay the Bounty &c. meeting adjourned to monday July 10th. 3 o'clock afternoon.

The Town being assem- bled again The Committee Reported a proposal that was agreed to & signed by a number of men which was as follows viz. - We whose names are hereunto Subscribed agree to go into the publick Service for three months upon the Following Conditions, provided the Town agree thereto Viz - we to Receive Five hundred Dol- lars Currency in hand, half a Bushel of Corn a Day or the value thereof in Current money at six months from the date hereof & also Five hundred Dollars more on our Return provided we serve the sd three months or in proportion to the Time of Service, the said last 500 Dollars to be increased or diminished, according as Depre- ciation or Appreciation shall take place. Witness our hands this 17th. day of July 1780. N.B. we to Receive the states pay & mileag to be paid as usual for travel home. The Town by a large Majority Voted to agree to the above proposals.


Voted, The Selectmen supply the Familys of such soldiers who are now gon & going into the Publick Service with money as they may want for the support of their Families


Voted, such persons as will lend the Town Money may Receive, Receipts therefor from the Selectmen which Receipts shall answer for taxes on the next Town tax.


Voted, the Treasurer give up to the Selectmen such securities as he has remaining in his hands payable the third day of August next. meeting Dissolved.

The Freeholders and other Inhabitants of the Town of Braintree, Qualify'd to Vote in the choice of a Representative Being assem- bled at the meeting House in the middle Precinct in said Town Pursuant to a Resolve of the Convention of June 16th. 1780, Direct- ed to the Selectmen and signed by the President of said Convention made choice of Richard Cranch Esqr. to Represent the Town in the Great and General Court or Assembly to be lield on the last Wednesday of October Next at the State House in Boston agre- able to the Constitution of Government Established by and for the inhabitants of the State of Massachusetts Bay.

The Secd. article in the warrant was to act upon any other mat- ter or thing The Town may Think Proper when assembled. assem- bled as aforesaid, made choice of the Hon". Samuel Niles Esq". moderator.


Then Voted to Give the Consta (Viz. ) Mr. Jonathan Webb Capt Jonathan Thayer and Mr. Thomas French Jun. four pence upon the pound for Colecting one Halfe of the Town Tax That they Now Have in their Hands, and also four Pence upon the Pound for Colecting a County Tax of thirteen Hundred & thirty six pounds ten shillings that they Now Have in their Hands.


Voted, to choose a Committee to Let out the Silver money Tax to the Lowest Bidder and all other Taxes that may be laid upon the Town betwixt this and next March. Voted to Pay for Collect- ing the Silver money Tax in the bills Emitted in April 1780 and to Pay for Collecting the Rest of the Taxes if their should be any to Collect, in the same Specie that the bills are Colecd.


Voted, the Selectmen to be the Committee to Let out the above sd tax bills


Voted, to choose a Committee to inquire into the Price of Beef and Report at Next Meeting. Then Mes®. Ebenezer Adams, Isaac Thayer & Nathaniel Niles was Chosen.


Voted, that Those Persons that should appear to Colect the above mentioned Taxes Give Bonds for a faithfull Discharge of their Colections

First, To see what meathod the Town will adopt to Procure the Beef Required by a Resolve of the General Court of Sept 26, 1780, and to Raise any sums of money that may be thought Proper.


2ª. To Hear the Report of any Committe's or to choose any Committe's That the Town may think Proper.


Moderator. Assembled as aforesaid Decn Daniel Arnold Mod- erator.


Committee Voted, To choose a Committee to Procure the money and pay for the Beef. Then Joseph Palmer Esqr. Capt Isaac Thayer Colº Jonathan Bass, Mr. James Brackett Capt John Vinton, Mr. Eli- sha Wales, Capt. Joseph Baxter, Mr. Ebenezer Newcomb, Majr Benja Hayden, and Lieut. Seth Man were chosen for that Purpos Committe to give security. Voted, the Committee to give security in Behalfe of the Town for the sums of money that they shall Borrow for the above sd Purpos. Voted, The obligations the Committee shall give shall Run Three months.

Warrants. The Freeholders and other Inhabitants of the Town of Braintree being assembled at the meeting House in the middle precienct in said Town pursuant to Legall Warrants, the perticulars are as follows, (Viz after a moderator chosen.


First, To advise and determine on such measures as shall appear to them best calculated to procure the number of men required from this Town by a Resolve of the General Court of the second instant


Secondly, To consider and determine whether the Town will give the selectmen any directions how they shall procure the hard money and Corn for their six months men against they return from the service


Thirdly, to Determine Respecting a number of Debts due from this Town to Individuals and give directions thereon.


Moderator. Assembled as aforesaid Honble. Sam1. Niles Esqr. moderator.


Voted to hire the men by a Committee The Resolve of the General Court of the second inst. for Raising thirty eight men from this Town, for three years or during the war to fill up the Continental Army, being Read the Town, Voted to Raise a Com- mittee to hire the men agreeable to sd Resolve & said Committee to consist of three one in each precinct and they to be chosen by Ballot. Then Capt". Joseph Baxter was chose for the North pre- cient, Maj Stephen Penniman for the middle and Colº Jonathan Bass, for the South precienct.


The meeting was adjourned to Thursday the 28th. inst 10 o'Clock forenoon.


Decembr 28


The Freeholders and other Inhabitants of the Town of Braintree being assembled by adjournment from the 19th. Decembr instant


The Committee Reported that they had engaged five men for the Continental Army in part of this Towns proportion agreeable To ye Resolve of the Gen1. Court of the second of Decembr. & wanted money to pay them & such others that they might Inlist their Bounty.


Selectmen & Treasurer to borrow money. Voted, the Selectmen and Treasurer be directed to Borrow money to pay the Soldiers their Bounty and the Treasurer give his Security In behalf of the Town.


Voted, to pass over the second artical in the Warrant for the present. Voted, also to pass over the third artical in the Warrant for the present. Voted to adjourn this meeting to this day fort- night one oclock, P.M.

Warrants. The Freeholders and other Inhabitants of the Town of Braintree Qualify'd by Law to Vote in Town affairs being as- sembled at the meeting house in the middle precienct in said Town pursuant to Legal Warrants the perticulars are as follows, (viz.) after a moderator Chosen.


First, To advise and Determine on some measures to procure the Towns proportion of Beef agreeable to a Resolve of the Gen1. Court of the fourth of December last.


Secondly, To Raise such sum or sums of money for purchasing Beef and defraying the other Charges of the Town as they shall think proper when assembled.


Thirdly, To act on any other matter or thing the Town may think proper


Moderator Assembled as aforesaid Dea". Daniel Arnold Mod- erator.


Money Raised, £70,000, £130,000 200,000 Voted, That the sum of seventy Thousand pounds be assessed on the polls and estates within this town for the purpose of procuring Beef and other charges, and also afterwards, Voted, that the sum of one Hundred and Thirty Thousand pounds more be assessed on the polls and Estates within this Town making in the whole Two hundred Thousand pounds, for the purpose of hiring men for the Continental Army as well as for purchasing Beef, and that the Assessors be directed to use their discretion in assessing the above sum between Landlord and Tenant.


Benja Jones. Voted, That Benjamin Jones who answered for one of this Towns Quota of Men for the Continental Army for three years from 1777, Receive his Bounty from the Town by the Treasurer's Security dated April 1777 or money in Liew thereof.


The meeting was then Dissolved.


Jan. 11th.


The Freeholders and other Inhabitants of the Town of Braintree being assembled by adjournment from the twenty eighth of De- cember last the Moderator not being present made choice of Dec". Daniel Arnold Moderator P.T.


Two more soldiers inlistd for the army. The Committee ap- pointed to hire money for the Continental Army, informed the Town that there was one Inlisted in the So Parish & one more in the north since the adjournment

First to Choos all such Town Officers for the Insuing year as the Law Directs also a Committee of Safety.


Secondly, to Determine respecting the repairing the Highways within said Town the ensuing year.


Thirdly To see if the Town will Raise money to Defrey the Charges of the town the ensuing year.


Fourthly, to hear the Report of any Committee or Choose any Committee The Town may think Proper when assembled.


Fifthly, To act on any other matter or thing The Town shall think proper. Assembled as aforesaid Joseph Palmer Esqr. Mod- erator.


Clerk and Treasurer. The vote was put whether the Town would Choose their Clerk by Written vote passed in the affirmative Votes were brought in and Moses French was Chosen, he was then afterwards Nominated and chosen Treasurer

The Freeholders and other inhabitants of the Town of Braintree being assembled by adjournment from March 5th. Instant, the Moderator not being present Thomas Penniman Esqr. was then chosen Moderator.


Selectmen & Assessors. Then the Town Voted to choose but three Selectmen for the ensuing year. Decon Daniel Arnold, Majr. Stephen Penniman & Joseh White Junr. ware Chosen Select- men Voted, that the Selectmen be the assessors.
