The Freeholders and other Inhabitants of the Town of Braintree, being assembled by adjournment from May 14.
G. Thayers bondsmen. Mr. Gaius Thayer presented Dea". Samuel Holbrook & Capt John Vinton as bondsmen for him as a Collector, the Town accepted of them as such.
Collectors to give bonds. Voted, that the Assessors call on Mess. Daniel Baxter & John French who agreed to collect the Taxes in the North and South precinct to give bonds agreeable to the Conditions they undertook to collect the Tax's upon.
Collectors of the last Tax to collect as soon as may be. Voted, the Collector of the last Town Tax collect it as soon as he can, and the Selectmen are to direct the Treasurer to make out an exe- cution against him in case of neglect of Collecting the same speed- ly.
Adjournment Voted, to adjourn this meeting to Tuesday the eighteenth instant 5, o clock afternoon.

First, to Determine upon the list of Jurors to serve on the Supreme Court and Court of Common Pleas and General Sessions of the Peace.

Jury list approved off The list of Jurors as prepaired by the Selectmen was laid before the Town and was approved of with some small alteration.

Voted, to choose a Committee who shall be impowered to settle with Mr. Ezra Penniman or to dispute his demand as they shall think proper and if they settle with him that they hear the Re- quest or Demands of any other person who have advanced money and Report to the Town at March meeting. Warrants. The Freeholders and other Inhabitants of the Town of Braintree Qualify'd by Law to vote in Town affairs being legally assembled at the Meeting house in the Middle precinct of said Town for the Choice of Town Officers and for the transacting the other affairs of said Town the Particulars whereof as inserted in the warrant are as follows -
First To choose all such Town Officers for the Present year as the Law directs, also to Receive in the votes for a County Treas- urer.
Secondly, To Raise such sum or sums of Money for the use of said Town as they may think proper when assembled.
Thirdly, To Direct in what manner the Highways shall be re- paired the ensuing year.
Fourthly, To see if the Town will give any Premium for Crows heads that shall be kill'd in said Town the ensuing year.
Fifthly, To see if the Town will divide into School districts.
Sixthly, To hear the Report of any Committee or choose any the Town may think proper when assembled.
Moderator. Assembled as aforesaid Majr Stephen Penniman was chosen Moderator.
Town Clerk & Town Treasurer. Voted, to chuse the Town Clerk by Ballot. The Votes being Collected sorted and Counted, Gen1. Ebenezer Thayer jun' had 108 Votes only 4 scattering ones. Then he was nominated and Chosen Town Treasurer, he was sworn as Clerk and Treasurer also; by the Hon. Sam1 Niles Esqr.

Committee to divide the Town into districts for Schooling and Report what sum is proper to be appropriated for Schools. Voted, To Chuse a Committee to Divide the Town into School districts and also to consider what sum wou'd be proper to be appropriated for Schooling the ensuing year ; and how much to each district and report upon the adjournment.
Voted, the Committee consist of four in each precinct besides the Selectmen, it is expected they serve without any pay. Then Peter B. Adams Esqr. Lieut. Seth Spear, Colº Edmund Billings, Mr. James Brackett, Capt". John Vinton Dec". Moses French, Gen1. Ebenezer Thayer, Lieut Ambros. Salisbury, Lieut. Nathaniel Niles, Dec". William Linfield Capt Elisha Wales and Lieut. Seth Mann was chosen as the Committee.
Mr. Porter to be paid. Voted, the Treasurer pay Master Porter for keeping the Gramer School, out of the first money he may re- ceive from the Collectors on the Tax granted 1789.
Capt. Wild to take Care of the Poor Voted, that the Overseer of the Poor house lay before the Selectmen for the time being a par- ticular acct. of all Provisions dl'd the Poor to be make out in proper weekly Returns and Voted, to let out the care of the Poor to the lowest bidder. Reconsidered that vote and voted to give Capt. Silas Wild three pounds, twelve shills. for taking cair the Poor and house one year.
adjournment. Voted, to adjourn this meeting to the first mon- day in April at 12 oclock at noon.

Braintree Anno Domini 1790.
Wardens. The Freeholders and other Inhabitants of the Town of Braintree Qualified to vote in Town Affairs and for the Choice of Town Officers being assembled by adjournment from the first of March last, the Warden Act being Read, Voted, to chuse two War- dens in each Precinct for the ensuing year. Then Mes®. Seth Spear, Joseph Bass secd Lemuel Veazie, Josiah Vinton, Samuel Allen and Jonathan Wales was chosen.
Mes®. Spear, Veazie and Vinton was sworn afterwards Mr. Vin- ton was excused from servingby the Town. Smelt Commee. Mes8. David P. Hayward, Joseph Allen & Ambros Salisbury com. to Prevent the Smelts being obstructed or disturb'd in the Channell.
Report of Committee that settle with the Treasurer. The Com- mittee appointed the the 6th. day of April last to settle with the Treasurer Reported, which report was Read, Voted, and accepted as it stands Recorded in the Treasurers Book Folos. 406 and 407.
Committee appointed to settle with the Treasurer. Voted, to Chuse a Committee to settle with the Treasurer at the end of the year one in each precinct. Then Peter B. Adams Esqr. Majr Ste- phen Penniman & Samuel Bass Esqr. was chosen.
For Collecting Town taxes in future. The Treasurer proposed to the Town a plan for the more speedy and sure way of Collecting

the Town Taxes in future which was accepted with sum addition as Recorded in Folº 84.
£1000, to be assessed. Voted, that the sum of One Thousand pounds be assessed on the Polls and Estates lying within the Town to pay Debts and Defray charges and expenses of the Town the ensuing year.
Collectors to pay £70 each into the Treasurer by June 10th. Voted, that each Collector of the last Tax pay into the Treasury forty pounds in specie by the tenth day of May next and a further sum of Thirty pounds each by the tenth day of June next.
[84] School Come Reported. The Committee appointed to divide the Town into School districts Reported which was not ac- cepted - it was then proposed to ascertain a Certain sum for School- ing and that it be divided in each precienct according to the sum they pay.
The Question was put and was Rejected.
Rules and Regulations proposed for the more speedy collecting Town Taxes. The plan proposed for the more speedy collecting Taxes.
There shall not be less than three Collectors chosen yearley the collecting of the Taxes shall be let out to the Lowest bidder pre- vious to the choice of Collectors. the person who shall bid of the Tax shall be chosen the Collector on the following conditions, (viz) they shall give bonds with sufficient sureties to the acceptance of the assessors, and and shall previous to Receiving the bill If he has been a Collector of Taxes heretofore produce to the assessors a Receipt from the Town Treasurer of all former Town Taxes com- mitted to him to collect the Tax bills shall be compleated by the Assessors and ready to be delivered to the Collectors in the month of October yearly, and in case any of the Collectors who shall be chosen as aforesaid shall not procure sufficient bondsmen or shall not produce a Receipt as aforesaid, Then the Assessors for the time being shall immediately after giving seven days public notice of the Time and place let out the Collecting of the Bill or Bills to the lowest bidder upon the same Conditions as before, and the an- nual meeting in March shall stand adjourned to the last monday in november yearley, for the purpose of chusing such collector or Collectors they complying with the conditions aforesaid ; In order that the Town may know the exact state of the Treasury at the end of each year ; The Treasurer shall or may issue his Execution against all Collectors who do not compleat a settlement with him by the first day of December next preceeding the year after the tax is granted or voted to be raised ; all Town Taxes shall be col- lected in specie or in orders drawn by the Treasurer.
The Assessors, shall not give orders for drawbacks on Taxes unless it be within one year from the date of the Bill and they are directed to pay particular attention to the Resolve of the General Court requiring them to examine into the State of the Collectors Tax bill.
In future all Town taxes shall be assessed in a seperate bill from all other Taxes and the County Tax in another bill.

Surveyor of Highways made choice of Edward Faxon for a Surveyor of Highways
Wardens. Matthew Pratt was nominated and chosen a Warden in the Roome of Joseph Bass secd. excused.
Joshua Samson was nominated and chosen a Warden in the Roome of Josiah Vinton excused.
Town Clerk to put up Notifications Voted, That the Town Clerk post up a notification one in each precienct of the Time and place when this meeting shall be adjoure'd to and the intention of the Town to chuse assessors and Collectors.
Way by the Wid. Pennimans. Voted, to postpone the consid- eration of the Selectmen's Report on the way from Majr. Penni- mans to Joseph N. Arnolds, until the adjournment of this meet- ing.
Voted, to Choose a Committee to consider of what schooling may be necessary the ensuing year.

Adjournment Voted, that the said Committee serve in that office without any pay, and that there be five in each precienct and that they be nominated by the Inhabitants of each respective precienct. Warrants. The Freeholders and other Inhabitants of the Town of Braintree qualified by Law to vote in Town Affairs being as- sembled this tenth day of May 1790 pursuant to Legal Warrants the particulars as are follows after a Moderator chosen.
First, To see if the Town will direct their Representative or any other person to join with the other Towns in the County to Petition the General Court that the Country Towns insd County may be incorporated into a separate County from the Town of Boston.

Secondly, To see if the Town will concent or vote that the North Precinct in said town and the other lands included with in the following bounds be set of into a seperate Town (viz) from the head of Haywards crick so called on a straight line till it strikes the line that divides the North & Middle precincts on the Road leading from the north to the middle precencts meeting house, and then to run on said line until it comes into the blue hill River, and so on said River as the line now Runs between the North and South precincts.
Moderator. Assembled as aforesaid, Maj' Stephen Penniman moderator.
Rep' to petition for a division of the County. Voted, that the Representative for the present year join with the other Towns in a Petition to the General Court when they may think proper, pray- ing that the Country Towns in this County may be formed into a Seperate county from the Town of Boston.
North Parish. After some considerable debate, Voted, to Dis- miss the second article in the Warrant.

The Freeholders and other Inhabitants of the Town of Brain- tree being assembled by adjournment from May 10, for the Choice of Town Officers and to Transact other Town affairs agreeable to notification.
Field Drivers Voted, to chuse six field drivers two in each precienct. Then Mess. John Nightingall, Joseph Hunt, William Hobart Zachariah M. Thayer Seth Mann jun' & John French was chosen.
Town officers rechosen. The following persons was chose into the several town offices hereafter named Mess. Ebenezer Brack- ett & Asaph Faxon as Sealers of Wood. Mess. Peter Bicknell & Timothy Thayer, Secd. as surveyors of highways. Mess. Levi Wild, Zeno French, and Elijah Veazie, jun. as Tythingmen. Mess. Joseph Bass secd. Joseph Brackett, Gideon French John Holbrook, Barnabas Clark and Ichabod Holbrook as Hogg Reaves.

Mr. Jonathan Marsh Sealer of Leather. Mess. Matthew Pratt and Samuel Allen as Wardens. then Warrants made out directing the Constables to cite them to take their oaths.
Assessors. Voted, to chuse two assessors in each precienct in addition to the Selectmen. Then Lieut Elijah Veazie, Lieut Seth Spear, Capt Nehemiah Holbrook Maj' Samuel M. Thayer, Capt. Elisha Wales and Lieut .Nathaniel Niles was chose.
Directions to the Collectors and Treasurer. Voted, that each Collector of the last Tax pay into the Treasury the sum of Forty pounds in fifteen days from this including the sum they have already paid in specie. If either of them shall neglect to pay the aforesaid sum of Forty pounds in specie by the Time aforesaid then the Treasurer shall Issue his execution against him for the whole sum that may be due.
Voted, that the Town will pay the Constables in future for warn- ing persons out of Town and for carring those out which they have a sufficient warrant for.
[89] Townway by Joseph N. Arnolds. Report of the Com- mittee appointed to lay out the Road from Majr. Stephen Penni- mans by the Widw. Penniman and on to Joseph N. Arnolds, begun at the later end.
Begun at the Country Road a little to the East of Mr. Joseph N. Arnolds dwelling House opposite to a Pear Tree on the south side of said Road, running to said Tree. then to a Rock south of said Arnolds orchards, then southerly to a stake in William Fields land, thence Southerly on said Fields land by blazed red Ceaders and a Rock with stones upon it, until it intersects with the old way. The Road to be one Rod and a half in width west of said course.
The Town voted to accept the above Report upon Conditions that it dont cost more than fifteen pounds to purchase the land fence the way and make it passable when all that is done then the Selectmen may draw on the Treasurer for that sum and not before.

The School Committee Reported virbely the the sum of one hundred and fifty pounds be appropreated for Schooling the ensu- ing year, and that there be a Gramer School keept nine months, three in each precienct beginning in the North and so on to the Mid- dle and South, which will include all the time to next march, such a Master to be agreed with as will be willing to Teach english as well as Latten, and also to teach wrighting and Cypering. The Remainder of the money to be divided in each precient accord- ing to what they pay for Polls & Estates, and each precienct to lay out their own money as this Committee shall direct or any other Committee the Precienct or Preciencts may chuse for that purpose. accepted May 31, 1790.

The Freeholders and other Inhabitants of the Town of Brain- tree qualified by Law to vote in Town affairs being assembled this twenty eighth day of June 1790, pursuant to Legal Warrants the particulars as as follows. After a Moderator chosen.
Warrants. First, to see if the Town will direct that the Treas- urer give security in behalf of the Town to the Executors of the Estate of Josiah Quincy Esq. decd. for a Debt due to said Estate, or to shift any other security that the Selectmen for the Time being may order, at the request of the Holders.
Secondly To direct Respecting some debts that are now call'd for ; and give directions to their Treasurer concerning the Rents that are now becom due to the Town.
Thirdly, to hear the Report of any Committee or chuse any Com- mittee

Voted, to chuse a Committee of five to settle with those persons who signed a Note to Josiah Quincy Esqr. and see what is due to sd Estate and Report to the Town at the meeting in august next.
Treasurer to shift security. Then Peter Boylston Adams Esq". Dec". Moses French, Capt Ichabod Holbrook, Capt. John Vinton and Mr. Joseph White jun" was chosen.
Voted, that the Selectmen direct the Treasurer to shift any secu- rity they may think proper.
Selectmen to defend. Voted, that the Selectmen be impowered to appear themselves or to authorize an attorney to appear in be- half of the Town to defend any action that has or may be brought against the Town.
