ELKLAND.
A former postoffice in Elkland township, Tuscola county, 21 miles northeast of Caro and 38 northeast of Vassar, its nearest shipping point.
ELK RAPIDS.
Lies on the east shore of Grand Traverse bay, in the township of Elk Rapids, south- west corner of Antrim county, 18 miles northeast of Traverse City. its railroad point, with which it connects by daily mail stage, and via which it is 91 miles above Reed City, 163 above Grand Rapids, and 280 from Detroit. Bellaire, the county seat, is 30 miles by stage or water northeast. The village is located at the mouth of Elk river, which is the outlet of the following lakes: Clam, 4 miles in length: Elk, 9 miles; Grass, 5 miles; Intermediate, 20 miles; Round, 4 miles, and Torch, 18 miles. During the season of navigation daily steamers run to Traverse City and on Torch and Elk lakes, carrying passengers and freight to interior points. Elk Rapids has a population of 770, and contains Methodist and Presbyterian churches, a $12,000 Union school with 4 teachers, a library of 636 volumes, a weekly news- paper, the Traverse Bay Progress, a flour mill, large saw-mill, blast furnace, and good hotel. A settlement of 50 people, located about a mile north of Cass river, in Elmwood township, in the northeastern part of Tus- cola county, 9 miles from Caro, the county seat, and 108 above Detroit. It is on the tri-weekly mail stage route from Caro to Cass City and Bad Axe, the two latter being 14 and 38 miles northeast, respect- ively. A blacksmith and a shoemaker are needed here. A country postoffice in Arbela township, Tuscola county, 26 miles southwest of Caro, the county seat, and 75 northwest of Detroit. Clio, on the F. & P. M. Ry, 7 miles southwest, is its railroad point, with which point and Vassar and Caro it has -tage connection; fare, to Tuscola, 20 cents; to Vassar and Clio, each, 40 cents. Mail, daily. Robert L. A station on the C. S. & C. R. R., 74 miles west of St. Louis and 12 northwest of Ithaca, the county seat of Gratiot county, in the northwestern part of which Elwell i- located. It has a daily mail.

A postoffice in a farming section, settled in 1876, in Center township, Emmet county, 16 miles northeast of Little Traverse, the county seat, and 20 north of Petoskey, the nearest bank and shipping point. A small place in Charlevoix county, on the mail route between Charlevoix village and Petoskey, being 43 miles east of the former place, and 111 west of the latter. Ship to Petoskey, on the G. R. & I. R. R.

EMMETT.
Containing a population of about 300, is situated in Emmett township, St. Clair county, on the C. & G. T. Ry, 18 miles west of Port Huron and 27 east of Lapeer. It has a grist mill, saw-mill, Catholic church and district school. Grain, butter, eggs, charcoal, staves and wood are shipped. Bank at Port Huron. Locality settled 1838. Village started 1868. Telegraph, Western Union. Express, American. Stage, with mail, daily to Brockway Center; fare, 75. cents. A physician and a tinsmith would find good business openings here. Frank Brogan, postmaster.

ENGLISHVILLE.
On the line between Alpine and Sparta townships, in the western part of Kent county, and a station on the G. R., N. & L. S. R. R. It was settled in 1848, has 200 inhabitants, is a shipping point for wheat, fruit, lumber, logs and shingles. Distance to Grand Rapids, south, 10 miles, to Ne- waygo, 22 miles.
