PETOSKEY.
The largest village in Emmet county, is situated on the south shore of Little Trav- erse bav, 5 miles by water or 10 by stage south of Little Traverse, the county seat. It is the northern terminus of the G. R. & I. R. R., and is 43 miles southwest of Che- boygan, 121 north of Reed City and 190 north of Grand Rapids. Previous to the completion of the railroad in 1874, Petos- key was but a small hamlet of perhaps 50 people. It was incorporated in 1878 aud now claims a population of 2,000. Bear creek affords an extensive water power. operating 2 flour mills, a saw-mill, planing mill and handle factory. Lime, lumber. flour, wooden ware, handles, maple sugar and tish are shipped. It has Methodist. Presbyterian and Catholic churches. 2 ward schools, 2 large hotels, and an assessed val- uation of $178,000. Petoskey is a noted resort for invalids and a sanitarium for

A copper mining village of 1,000 or more inhabitants, settled in 1845, in Houghton township, Keweenaw county, 2 miles southwest of Eagle River, the county scat and shipping point by water. L'Ause, 60 miles south, is the nearest railroad ap- proach. The mines and stamping works of the Phoenix Mining Co are located here. The product of these mines in 1880 was about 1,000,000 pounds of copper. A village of 450 inhabitants, in Putnam township. Livingston county. It is on the daily mail stage route to Howell, its county seat, 12 miles due north on the D .. L. & N. R. R., and south to Dexter 10 miles on the M. C. R. R., its shipping point, via which it is 51 iniles northwest of Detroit. The place has Catholic, Congregational and Methodist churches, a graded school and a touring mill, with 3 run of stones. Near- est bank at Dexter. Grain, flour and wool are the exports; of the latter 120,000 lbs were shipped in 1879. Fare, to either Dexter or Howell, 75 cents. Mail, daily. Mrs. S. B. Young, postmaster.

A rising village of 400 population, is located on the Mackinaw Div. M. C. R. R., at the crossing of the S. B. & N. W. R. R., in Pinconning township, Bay county, 20 miles above Bay City. A thriving village containing a popula- tion of about 500, was settled in 1836, in Unadilla township, Livingston county. 16 miles southwest of Howell, the county seat. It is on the tri-weekly mail stage route from Unadilla, 6 miles south. to Fowlerville, 134 miles north, on the D. L. & N. R. R., its nearest shipping point, to which the fare is 75 cents. The village has Presbyterian and Metho- dist churches, a district school, flouring. planing, cider and other mills, a barrel and a sash and door factory. PLAINWELL.
Next to Allegan the most important town in Allegan county, has a popula- tion of about 1,400. It is situated at the intersection of the G. R. & I. R. R. and the Kalamazoo division L. S. & M. S. Ry, in the township of Gun Plains, southeast- ern part of the county, and is 13 miles southeast of Allegan, 12 north of Kalama- 700, 38 south of Grand Rapids and 156 west of Detroit. The Kalamazoo river furnishes a large water power, a fall of 9 feet occurring within & of a mile. This extensive motor is utilized by 3 flour mills, 3 planing mills, a paper mill, a rake and handle factory, and a saw-mill. Plainwell is located in an extremely rich and pro- ductive grain and fruit country, and is a
prominent market for wheat. The ship- ments of flour average about 100,000 barrels a year, of paper 500 tons, and of rakes and handles 5,000 dozen. Live stock and fruit are also shipped in large quantities. The town has 5 churches, Baptist, Catho- lic, Episcopal, Methodist Episcopal and Presbyterian, 3 public balls, a large cen- tral and a primary school building. in which 9 teachers are employed and 426 scholars enrolled; a ladies' library associa- tion has a collection of 875 volumes, be- sides which there is a district library of some 200 books. Among the recent im- provements are a fine iron bridge spanning the river, erected at a cost of $4,500, and a number of substantial residences. Water works on the Holly system were erected in 1870, at a cost of $10,000. The village is the headquarters of the Union Agricul- tural and Industrial Society of Allegan. Barry and Kalamazoo counties, which has its grounds located here. A weekly news- paper, the Independent (Republican), is pub- lished. Express, United States and Amer- ican. Telegraph, Western Union. Plain- well was settled in 1836, and became an incorporated village in 1869. Mail stage to Gun Marsh.
