It has steam flouring, saw and planing mills, 2 grain elevators, and an of- tice of the Western Union Telegraph Co. Shipments, cattle, grain and black ash hoops. FARMERS' CREEK.


Derives its name from the small stream upon which it is located, at the dividing line between Hadley and Metamora town- ships, southwest portion of Lapeer county, about two miles west of Metamora, on the D. & B. C. R. R., its nearest depot, with which it has daily connection by mail stage; 50 miles above Detroit, and 6 south of Lapeer court house. FARMINGTON.


A brisk village, settled in 1824, and in- corporated in 1867, has a present popu- lation of 700, and is located on Rouge river, in Farmington township, Oakland county, 19 miles from Detroit, 14 south of Pontiac, the seat of justice, and 5 east of Novi station, on the F. & P. M. Ry, its nearest depot. It has 3 churches, Baptist, Methodist and Universalist, a district school, 2 each of flour, cider and saw-mills, a foundry, carriage shop and several stores and artisans' shops. Exports, farm and dairy products. Banking business trans- acted with A. S. Lapham, Northville. Daily mail stage to Beech (Fisher's), 12 miles distant, on the D., L. & N. R. R .; fare, 50 cents. FARWELL.


The former county seat of Clare county, is situated in Surrey township, in the extreme southern part of the county. and is a promi- nent station on the F. & P. M. Ry. It is 20 miles by rail south of Harrison, the county seat, 54 above Saginaw, 34 east of Reed City, and 152 from Detroit. It was settled in 1870, and, according to the re- cent census, has a population of 621. In- cluding the immediate vicinity, it has 7 saw and shingle mills, a flouring mill, plan- ing mill, Congregational church, graded school of 2 rooms, a ladies' library of 600 volumes, lodges of Masons, Odd Fellows and Good Templars. 2 good hotels, an ex- cellent weekly newspaper, the Register, and several large lumbermen's supply stores. Tobacco river. a branch of the Tittaba- wassee, flows through the village, furnish- ing power to operate a flour mill. Farwell has an immense trade in supplying the numerous lumber camps in the vicinity, and ships annually large quantities of lath. lumber, pine logs and shingles. Express. American. Telegraph. FAWN RIVER.


Takes its name from the stream on which it is located, in the township of Fawn River, St. Joseph county, near the Indiana State line. It is 18 miles southeast of Centreville, the county seat. Burr Oak and Sturgis, on the L. S. & M. S. Ry, are each 5 miles distant, the latter being con- nected by daily mail stage: fare, 50 cents. Two flour mills and a woolen mill derive power from the river. The place has a large public school and a Methodist cou- gregation, but no church building. Bank, First National, Sturgis. FENNVILLE.


A thriving village on the C. & W. M. R. R., in the townships of Clyde and Man- lius, Allegan county, 18 miles north of west from Allegan court house, 41 south- west of Grand Rapids and 75 north of New Buffalo. The settlement was first made in 1855, and now claims a population of 450. Good farming lands surround it, and fruit is raised in great abundance, 205,000 bas- kets of peaches having been shipped from here this year (1880). Land is valued at from $5 to $50 per acre, the former being unimproved. It has a Methodist Episco- pal church, district school and steam saw- mill. Or Fenton, as it is frequently called, is situated on the north branch of the Shia- wassee river and on the D., G. H. & M. Ry, 50 miles northwest of Detroit, in Fen- ton township, Genesee county. It was originally settled in 1834. platted in 1837 and incorporated as a village in 1868. The population at present number- about 2,500. Fenton is beautifully situated in an excellent rolling farming country from which grain, hay, apples and live stock, the staple agricultural pro- ducts, are largely shipped. The manufac- turing and business interests include a flour mill, 2 grain elevators. 2 planing mills, an agricultural implement factory. a pump factory, a foundry and machine shop, 2 local newspapers, the Gazette and Independent and 4 hotels. The churches are Baptist, Methodist, Catholic. Episcopal. and Presbyterian. A large high school building affords ample educational facili- ties. A beautiful lake 1} miles from the center of the village is becoming a popu- lar resort for pleasure seekers, and the place has one of the finest fair grounds and race courses. in the state. Express. Delta county; a station on the C. & N. W. Ry, 8 miles west of Escanaba.


FERRY.


With an estimated population of 200, is located on the north branch of White river, in the township of Ferry, Oceana county, 14 miles southeast of Hart, the county seat, and 39 north of Muskegon. Shelby station, on the C. & W. M. R. R., 8 miles west, is the present shipping point. The D., L. & N. R. R. will, when com- pleted, pass through the village. Ferry was settled in 1852, and formerly known as Reed. It has three churches, Methodist, Presbyterian and United Brethren, and a district school. The river furnishes excel- lent water power, utilized by tlouring and lumber mills. Bank, Citizens, of Hart. The leading shipments from the locality are wheat, fruit, pork, lumber and blooded stock. A village of about 500 inhabitants. lo- cated on the north bank of Grand river. 2 miles above Grand Haven, in the township of Spring Lake, Ottawa county. The D., G. II. & M. and Grand Haven railways pass through the place, by the former of which it is 187 miles from Detroit. It has a large steam saw-mill, a foundry and ma- chine shop, a boiler works, a Dutch Re- form church and a graded public school. Bank, First National. Grand Haven.
