GROSSE POINT.


Lies on the shore of lake St. Clair, S miles northeast of the city of Detroit, of which it is a somewhat fashionable suburb. It has a population of about 200, and, in-


cluding the township of - Grosse Point, of 2,469. Garden produce, fruit, fish and grain are the principal exports. Consider- able improvements have been made here within the last few years by the erection of handsome residences, owned principally by merchants of Detroit, the locality making it a very desirable point for health and comfort in the summer season. It has now a large dock, extending 800 feet into the lake, four churches, two Catholic, English Protestant and German Lutheran, and several schools. The fishing interest has grown to considerable proportions recently, and large numbers of muscallonge, white fish. herring, etc., are marketed. Mail, semi-weekly. Alexander Michie, post- master.

It is on the mail route between Brighton and Ann Arbor, 7 miles south of the former place, and 12 north of the latter. A flour and saw-mill is oper- ated by water. A flourishing village of 3, 000 inhabitants, platted in 1858, and located on the shore of


Portage lake, in the northern part of Houghton county, 36 miles north of L'Anse, the terminus of the M., H. & O. R. R .. and 94 northwest of Marquette. It is the southern terminus of the Mineral Range R. R., a narrow or three-foot gauge road, 12} miles in length, extending to Calumet, and a road which, for its financial success, has hardly been equaled by any in the country.


Like Houghton, the county seat, directly opposite and connecting by toll bridge, Hancock is situated on a hill-side, rising to the height of 500 feet above the lake level. It has 4 churches, Catholic, Con- gregational, Lutheran and Methodist, a good graded school, 2 steam saw-mills, a large foundry and machine shop, copper smelting works, and several extensive stamp mills, belonging to different mines in the vicinity. It is the location of the famous Quincy copper mine, one of the most prosperous in the upper peninsula. second only to the wonderful Calumet and Hecla, and also of the Franklin and Pewa- bic, operated under one management as the Franklin-Pewabic mine. rated in 1880, and is located in the town- ship of Haring, Wexford county. 22 miles southeast of Sherman, the county seat. The place is improving rapidly, and now has 3 steam saw-mills, a shingle mill, a hotel, a neat school house, costing $1,000, and several stores. The nearest bank is at Cadillac, 2} miles south. Lumber. shingles and potatoes are the chief exports: of the former 10,000,000 feet were shipped in 1879. A branch track of the G. R. & I. R. R. is being laid from a point & of a mile north to Muskrat lake and the pine region beyond, in Missaukee county. Mail, daily. Ephraim Shay, postmaster.

A postoffice established at a farm house in 1880, in Comms township. Oscoda county. It is on the Au Sable river, 65 miles due west of Harrisville, and 29 northeast of Roscommon station, on the Mackinaw Div. M. C. R. R. Population of the county, 465. Mail, by special supply. HARRIS CREEK.


Located at junction of the Coldwater and Little Thornapple rivers, in Bowne township, Kent county, 22 miles from Grand Rapids, 158 from Detroit, via Char- lotte and Lansing, 10 east of Caledonia, on the Grand Rapids Div. M. C. R. R .. to which there is a weekly mail stage, and 5 from Parmelee station, ou same line, its shipping depot. It has a steam saw-mill and a population of about 50. A. D. Thomas, postmaster.

HARRISON'S.


Washtenaw county, a station on the D .. H. & S. W. R. R., 5 miles southwest of Ypsilanti.


HARRISVILLE.


A village, township and postoffice in Alcona county, situated on the west shore of lake Huron, about 200 miles north of Detroit, 100 north of Bay City and 45 northeast of Standish. During the season of navigation the village has daily communication by boat with Bay City, and in winter with Standish by stage. It is the seat of justice for the county. and contains a good court house and jail, a school house of three grades, an agri- cultural hall, 2 hotels, Methodist, Catholic and Presbyterian churches, the latter a neat structure, costing $5,000, 3 small pub- lic halls, the nucleus of a library, now containing 300 volumes, and a weekly Re- publican newspaper. In manufactories it has 2 steam saw-mills, 1 grist mill, 1 planing mill and 1 shingle mill. The principal business houses are 3 general stores, 3 grocers, a printing office, and offices of Holt's and the American Express and Western Union Telegraph. Assessed valu- ation of real and personal property, about $150.000. Bonded indebtedness, $3,000. Population, 800. The general business of the county is farming and lumbering. Os- coda county is attached, for judicial pur- poses, to Alcoua county. A State road is nearly completed to the An Sable river, and Oscoda county and the State and Gov. ernment lauds are open to settlers. The soit is a rich, sandy loam, valued, unim- proved, at $3 to $5 per acre. Fare to Al- pena, by stage. $3: to An Sable, $1.50; to Standish, $5.50. Mail, daily. Henry F. Colwell, postmaster.
