Lies at the intersection of the Grand Rapids Div M. C. R. R. and the Lansing Div. L. S. & M. S. Ry, in the township of Eaton Rapids, southeastern part of Eaton county. Via the first of the above named roads it is 24 miles northwest of Jackson, 100 west of Detroit, and 11 southeast of Charlotte, the county seat. The settle- ment, which dates its existence from 1837, became an incorporated village in 1859, was reincorporated in 1871, and is now arranging for a city charter. Grand river, which flows through the town, furnishes power for a flour mill, woolen factory and iron foundry, besides which there are manufactories of lumber, staves and bar- rels, doors, sash and blinds, handles, but- ter tubs, brick, etc. But the place is chiefly famous for its mineral waters, it claiming the appellation of the Saratoga of Michigan. Artesian wells are sunk a few hundred feet, when the waters, pos- sessing strong magnetic properties, flow to the surface in copious streams. They are slightly cathartic in their effects, and are highly extolled for their cures in cases of dyspepsia and also rheumatic affections. The Anderson and Frost Houses have each mineral springs in connection. Mr. Hale, proprietor of the latter house, came to the village in 1875, and after running the An- derson House one year, took the Frost House, of which he is still the proprietor.
