GREENBUSH.
A rising village on the shore of lake Huron, in the southeastern part of Alcona county. It is in Greenbush township, 5 miles south of Harrisville, the county seat. During season of navigation ship by water direct, in winter by rail to Standish, 75 miles southwest. The principal exports are furnished by a steam saw-mill. The soil in this region is chiefly a sandy lomm; value, unimproved, from 83 to $5 per acre. Settled, 1866. Population claimed, 500. Express, Holt's. Telegraph, Western Union. GREENLAND.
A copper mining village in the town- ship of Greenland, Ontonagon county, 12 miles southeast of Ontonagon court house and 29 west of L'Anse, the former its shipping point by water, the latter by rail. The place has two stamp mills, and ex- ports largely of copper. Settled in 1854. Population, 1,000. Bank at L'Anse with which stage communication is had daily ; fare, 85. L. Collins, postmaster. GREEN OAK.
Sometimes called Green Oak Mills, was settled in 1838, has a population of 65, and is situated in Green Oak township, south- cast corner of Livingston county. 3 miles a little south of west from South I.von. it. railroad point, 20 southeast of Howell, the county seat, and 3; from Detroit. The location of a postoffice, store and some small interests on the D., L.& N. R. R., in Green Oak township, Livingston county, 14 miles southeast of Howell, the seat of justice, and 37 west of Detroit. It has about 30 inhabitants, and is a shipping point for farm products. GREENVILLE.
The metropolis of Montcalm county, is pleasantly situated on a romantic bend in Flat river, about 20 miles above its conflu - ence with the Grand. It is in Eureka township, in the southwestern part of the county, and is an important station on the D .. L. & N. R. R., 18 miles southwest of Stanton, the county seat. 21 northwest of Ionia, and 141 from Detroit. Greenville obtained a city charter in 1870, and has a population of 3.200. Its municipal affairs are managed by a mayor, city clerk. col. lector, treasurer. police justice, city attor- ney, marshal and surveyor, their terms ex- piring in April of each year. There are also 6 aldermen, two from each ward, one- half of whose terms expire each year. The total financial liabilities of the city consist of a balance of $8,000 of school bonds. The city is lighted with gas, has an organ- ized fire department, and many substantial features of a public and private character. There are 6 churches, Methodist, Baptist. Free Will Baptist, Catholic. Congrega- tional, Episcopal, three commodious school buildings, one of which cost $30.000. a ladies' library of 2,000 volumes, a national and ? private banks, 2small daily and weekly newspapers, representing the vari ous political organizations, 2 good hotels, a neat opera house, lodges of Masons. GREENWOOD.
Also known as Summit, is a village of 100 inhabitants, settled in 1874. in Edwards township, near the southern line of Oge- maw county. It is a station on the Mack- inaw Div. of the M. C. R. R., 10 miles be- low West Branch, the county seat, and 44 above Bay City. The large lumber mill formerly located here, and which was burned in 1879, has not been rebuilt, but arrangements are being completed for building 3 shingle mills during the season of 1881. Canthooks and peevies are the only manufactures, and with lumbermen's supplies and logs are the shipments. This is one of the best points for sportsinen along the line of road, game of all kinds being found in great abundance. During the lumbering season, 40 or 50 camps, employ- ing about 2,000 men, are established in the heavy pine timbered region surrounding the village, and their cuttings are princi- pally sent by the Rifle and Tittabawassee rivers to Bay City and Saginaw. A small village settled in 1860, in the township of Greenwood, St. Clair county. 16 miles northwest of Port Huron and 6 west of Grant Center, a station on the P. HI. & N. W. Rv. The place has German Methodist and Lutheran churches, a steanı saw-mill aund general store, but needs a good shoemaker. A station on the M., H. & O. R. R., 22 miles west of Marquette. It is in Ely township, Marquette county, in a rough section of country, growing ouly root crops. Iron is the only product shipped.

GRINDSTONE CITY.
Is situated in Port Austin township, Huron county, on the shore of lake Huron, 22 miles northeast of Bad Axe, the county seat, 21 above Sand Beach, and 90 above Port Huron. The settlement was estab- lished in 1850, and now numbers about 250 inhabitants. It takes its name from the extensive quarries of peculiar stone worked here, of the kind specially adapting it for manufacture into grindstones and whet- stones. There are two firms engaged in this industry. Salt also is manufactured. Grindstones, scythe stones, salt and cedar posts are shipped. Nearest bank at Sand

GROSSE ISLE.
Belonging to Monguagon township, Wayne county, is a large island in the De- troit river, 20 miles below Detroit. It is crossed by the Canada Southern Ry, and is fast becoming a popular summer resort. A number of merchants and professional gentlemen doing business in Detroit have their residences here, There are 3 hotels. 1 Catholic and 2 Episcopal churches on the island. Grapes and other fruits are extensively grown, and the river on all sides affords excellent fishing. Grain, hay, wood, stone, grapes, apples, pears and whitefish are staple articles of shipment.
