engines and boilers, wood and paper boxes, corsets, with the usual number of planing mills, flouring mills, etc. Jackson has 1 Adventist, 4 Baptist, 1 Catholic, 2 Con- gregational, 1 Evangelical, 1 Hebrew, 1 Unitarian, 1 German Lutheran, 3 Metho- dist, and 2 Protestant Episcopal churches, among whose organizations are several of the finest church edifices in the State; two of these, the Baptist and Methodist, are surpassed by but few, even in the larger cities. The school facilities of the city are unusually advantageous, there being two main buildings of large capacity and a sufficient number of substantial branch structures to accommodate all parts of the city, even in its remotest suburbs. The city is amply supplied with water, both for public and domestic purposes, by the Holly system, from the Grand river, which has its source a few miles to the south, and is very pure and in abundant supply at this point. There are two enterprising daily newspapers at Jackson. the Patriot, pub- lished by Carlton & Van Antwerp. and the Citizen, published by James O'Donnell. There are also very large and creditable weeklies issued from both these offices, and one German weekly, the Michigan Volk's- freund, published by Rudolph Worch. The present population of the city is 16,500. Telegraph, Western Union. Ex- press, American and United States. Win. L. Seaton, postmaster.
