HOMER.
The fourth town in population and im- portance in Calhoun county, is situated at the crossing of the Air Line Div. M. C. R. R. and the Lansing Div. L. S. & M. S. Ry, 23 miles west of Jackson, 13 southeast of Marshall, 46 south of Lansing, 19 above Hillsdale, and 99 west of Detroit. It is in the township of Homer, in the south- east corner of the county, where a settle- ment was established in 1832. Two years later a village was platted here, and in 1871 it obtained an act of incorporation. Ho- mer, according to the census of 1880, has a population of 900; it is the center of a highly fertile and well cultivated region of country, and is an important shipping point for agricultural products, especially wheat. The total exports in 1879 were 7,577 tons. A branch of the Kalamazoo river flows through the village, and the St. Joseph approaches within a mile of it. The former furnishes good water power, operating 1 saw and 2 flour mills. The place contains Episcopal, Methodist Epis. copal and Presbyterian churches, a good graded school, an organized library asso- ciation, & banks, & hotels and a weekly newspaper, the Index. A postoffice and small settlement in the township of Homestead, near the center of Benzie county. It is 6 miles east of Ben- zonia court house, 13 east of Frankford, on the shore of lake Michigan, and 25 southwest of Traverse City. its nearest railroad approach, whence it has tri-weekly stage communication. The place has a saw and planing mill, feed mill, Congre- gational society and public school. Lum-

A postoffice and small village in Hope township, Midland county. It was settled in 1867, and is in a timber section of coun- try, lumber and shingles supplied by a steam saw-mill, being the ouly shipments. Midland, the county seat, is 13 miles south, and Averill's station, on the F. & P. M. Ry, 6} miles. Mail is receieved by stage from the latter point weekly : fare, 50 cents. HOPKINS.
Was settled in 1856 and is located on Rabbit river, in the township of Hopkins. Allegan county. It is 13 miles notheast of Allegan court house, and equi-distant (about 3 miles) from Bradley, on the G. R. & I. R. R., and Hopkins station, on the Kala- mazo Div. L. S. & M. S. Rv, the latter being the usual shipping point. The only industry, a flouring mill, derives power from the river. Apples, butter, cheese and eggs are shipped. Bank, first National, Allegan. HOPPERTOWN.
Formed as a settlement in 1871, is a sta- tion on the C. & W. M. R. R., in Lee town- ship, Allegan county. 15 miles southwest of Allegan, and 12 northeast of South Haven. Has a steam saw-mill and exports railroad ties, cord-wood and fruit. Post- office discontinued.
HORR.
Settled in 1879, is a place of 200 popula- tion, located at the mouth of Pine river (by which name it is also known), on the west shore of Saginaw bay. It is in Stand- ish township, Bay county, 30 miles north- east of Bay City and 5 miles east of Stand- ish, on the Mackinaw Div. M. C. R. R., its railroad station, with which it has a daily stage line: fare, 50 cents. Bank, First Na- tional, Bay City. Eighteen million feet of logs were rafted here this year (1880), and the place has a large steam saw and lath mill and a shingle and stave factory, with a daily capacity of 65,000. Mail, daily. HORTON'S BAY.
On the northeastern shore of Pine lake, in the northern central part of Charlevoix
county, is a settlement of perhaps 20 people and the location of a recently established postoffice, having a weekly mail delivery. It is 10 miles southeast of Charlevoix.
HOUGHTON.
A thriving place of about 2,500 inhabi- tants and the county seat of Houghton county. is located on the south shore of Portage lake, 14 miles from the mouth of Portage river, 10 from lake Superior on the west via canal, and 95 northwest of Marquette via L'A. & H. Transportation Co. and M., H. & O. R. R. The settle- ment was formed in 1852 and became an incorporated village in 1861. It is in the midst of the lake Su- perior copper region. a strip of country + to 6 miles in width. extending from southwest to north- east through the en- tire length of the Keweenaw peninsula and beyond. This range is very rich in copper, and some of the most productive mines in the world are located in the vi- cinity of the village. The only ones now being operated (1880). on the south side of the lake, are the At- lantic, Huron and Isle Roval mines. The village occupies a rather steep hillside, and is almost isolated by a broad stretch of rough timbered country. It contains the court house, jail, Catholic, Episcopal and Methodist churches, a bank, a large public school building and 4 hotels, the Douglass being a first-class and well kept house. A toll-bridge, erected at a cost of $50,000, affords communication with Haucock. three-fourths of a mile distant, on the north side of the lake. A copper stamp works and a safety fuse factory are located here, and an excellent weekly newspaper is published. In winter a stage line, owned by the L'Anse & Houghton Transportation Co., connects with Torch Lake and L'Anse. All freights shipped after November 1st are subject to the close of navigation. HOWARD CITY.
One of the most flourishing towns in . Montcalm county lies at the intersection . of the D., L. & N. with the G. R. & I. R. R., in Reynolds township, 20 miles north- west of Stauton court house, 34 northwest of Ionia, the same distance north of Grand Rapids, and 160 miles from Detroit. Good water power is supplied by Tamarac river, 2 saw-mills, a shingle mill, butter tub fac- tory and machine shop being operated. It also has a grain elevator. a bank. 3 hotels, Methodist, Baptist and Free Will Baptist churches, and a society of Episcopalians at present without a church edifice. The river is spanned by 2 substantial bridges, a good Union school is sustained, and the place supports a weekly newspaper, the Record. Lumber, shingles, butter tubs, staves, wheat and potatoes are largely ex- ported. The village was settled in 1869. incorporated in 18:3, and has a population of 1,000. Mail, daily.
