Monroe county, station on the. T. & A. A. R. R., 24 miles above Toledo, and 22 south of Ann Arbor.
MACON.
Was settled in 1820 as Pennington's Cor- ners. It now has a population of 200, and is in Macon township, Lenawee county, 18 miles northeast of Adrian, the county seat, 6 southeast of Clinton, and 56 southwest of Detroit. Tecumseh, on the Jackson Br. L. S. & M. S. Ry, is its shipping station, whence mail is received by stage weekly. Methodist, Baptist and Presbyterian churches, a steam saw-mill and tile works are located here. Shipments, farm pro- ducts. Good farming lands in the vicinity

The postoffice at Deerfield Center, a vil- lage of 100 inhabitants, in the township of Deerfield, Livingston county. It is on the weekly mail route between Howell, the county seat, 12 miles southwest, and Lin- den, on the D., G. H. & M. Ry, 10 miles northeast. Fenton, however, 11 miles dis. tant on the same road, is its bank and ship- ping point. It has a Methodist Episcopal church and a public school. Grain, butter and eggs are shipped. George J. A station on the C. & N. W. Ry, in Maple Ridge township, Delta county, 25 miles north of Escanaba, the county seat, and 636 via Chicago from Detroit. Settled, 1876. Population, 100. MANCELONA.
A village on the G. R. & I. R. R., in a township of the same name, in the south- ern part of Antrim county, 13 miles south- cast of Bellaire, the new county seat, with which and Eastport it has semi-weekly stage communication. Mancelona was settled in 1870, and now has a population of 250. Timber, hard and soft wood, abounds in the vicinity, and with grain and potatoes (for which the neighboring coun- try is well adapted ; form considerable ship- ments. A flouring mill is needed. The nearest, bank is at Cadillac. A steam saw- mill is located here, and the Antrim County Herald, a weekly paper, is published. Dis- tance to Petoskey. 37 miles; to Graud Rap- ids, 148. MANCHESTER.
According to the census of 1880, has 1,200 inhabitants, and is the third place iu population in Washtenaw county. It is beautifully situated in the valley of the river Raisin, in the southwestern part of the county, at the crossing of the D .. H. & S. W. and the Jackson Br. L. S. & M. S. Ry, 22 miles southwest of Ann Arbor. 21 southeast of Jackson, 51 northwest of Toledo, and 54 from Detroit. Manchester has several manufacturing enterprises, a bank with a capital of $50.000; a large. handsome Union school building, with no- commodations for 350 pupils: 6 churches of as many denominations, 2 hotels, a weekly newspaper, the Etterprise, and a capacious public hall. MANISTEE.
On the shore of lake Michigan, at the mouth of the Manistee river, is the capital of Manistee county, and an incorporated city, whose population in June, 1880, ac- rording to the United States census, Was 5,075. the present population being 7,500, or more. It is 270 miles northwest of De- troit via Ludington, and 15 from Chicago by boat. The first settlement of the place
dates as far back as 1846, and it became incorporated as a city in 1869. The Man- istee and Little Manistee rivers both hav- ing the same ontlet to lake Michigan at this place, form at their junction a small lake about 5 miles long and half a mile wide. the same being the eastern boundary of the city, on which are located some 30 saw and shingle mills, whose product for 1880. nearly all of which is marketed at Chicago, may be seen by referring to the following table, which we clip from the Manistee In- dependent :

There are also 3 planing mills, 2 foun- dries and machine shops, 3 boiler shops, a saw shop, and several other manufactur- ing establishments of minor importance. a bank and 4 weekly newspapers. The public schools are a central and 3 ward schools, with 18 teachers, the total vale of school property being about $40.000. The churches are Catholic, Congregational, Methodist, German Intheran and Scandi- navian Baptist, Lutheran and Methodist. The building improvements during the past few years have made a notable change in the appearance of the city, there being now a goodly number of substantial brick business blocks and handsome private resi- dences. The Goodrich line of steamers furnish daily communication with Mil- waukee via Ludington, and make semi- weekly trips to Frankfort, 25 miles north. A daily stage runs during the winter sea- son to landington, also to Bear Lake and Pierport, connecting at the latter piace
