PARSHALLVILLE.


A'village of 200 people, in Hartland township, Livingston county. 13 miles northeast of Howell, the county seat, and 50 from Detroit. It connects with the mail route from Howell to Fenton, and is 10 miles south of the latter place, its near- est depot, on the D., G. H. & M. Ry. Contains 2 churches, Baptist and Metho. dist, a graded school, and a flour mill. Flour and pork are shipped. Stage, with mail, daily to Highland station. 1.2 miles east, on the F. & P. M. Ry. J. S. Gris- wold, postmaster.

Numbering 140 inhabitants, was settled in 1839, in Lee township, northeastern part of Calhoun county, in the center of a good farming country, from which grain. wool, fruit, cider and cider jelly are mar- keted. It contains Adventist and Metho- dist churches, and a public school. Dis- tance to Marshall, the seat of justice, 13 miles; to Detroit, 116. Springport, on the Lansing Div. L. S. & M. S. Ry, 94 miles east, is its shipping station, whence mail is had semi-weekly. David W. Murrey. postmaster.

PAW PAW.


The county seat of Van Buren county. is a thriving and attractive village, located on the river from which it takes its naine. in the township of Paw Paw, 4 miles northwest of Lawton, at which point it is connected with the M. C. R. R. by a short line of road known as the Paw Paw, To- ledo & South Haven R. R. Distance to Kalamazoo, 20 miles: to Niles, 85 miles; and to Detroit, 164 miles. Paw Paw was settled in 1832, and incorporated in 1867. It now has a population of 1.500, and is one of the prettiest villages in the State. The streets are wide and level, and lined with large and beautiful maples, and it is surrounded by handsome drives and pic- turesque lakes. There are ? churches, 2 Baptist, Catholic, Christian, Methodist and Presbyterian, a fine Union school building. costing $40,000, an opera house, 2 banks. the First National, with a capital of $100, - 000, and a private institution, 2 hotels, 5 flouring mills, 1 plow factory, 1 wooden- ware factory, 1 handle factory, ? foundry and machine shops, 2 planing mills and a · Union school, with 9 teachers and an at- tendance of 500 pupils. Three weekly newspapers are published. Wheat, apples, peaches, pork and live stock are the staple agricultural products marketed here. Ex. press, American. A post village on the tri-weekly mail route from Holly to Ortonville, 6 miles northeast of the former and about the same distance west of the latter place. It is in Holly township, Oakland county.


PECK.


Sometimes called Elk Corners. A thriv- ing village of 300 inhabitants, settled in 1872 and located in the township of Elk, Sanilac county, 11 miles south of San- dusky, the county seat, 15 due west of Lexington, and 9 west of Croswell, its shipping point via the P. H. & N. W. Ry, whence it receives mail semi-weekly by stage. It also has a weekly mail from Omard, 5 miles west. The village is on Chris- tiau river, has 200 inhabitants and was set- tled in 1871. It is sometimes called Jamestown. PENTWATER.


On the shore of lake Michigan at the outlet of Peutwater lake, is an incorpor- ated village of 1,200 population in the northwest corner of Oceana 'county, 8 : iniles from Hart. the county seat. 44 north of Muskegon and 240 from Detroit. It is the northern terminus of the C. & W. M. R. R. The village has 2 saw-mills. 3 shin- gle mills, a flour mill, a planing mill, a bank, a weekly newspaper, a public library containing about 600 volumes, a good Union school and four churches, Catholic. Congregational, Episcopal and Methodist. During the season of navigation a steamer makes two daily trips to Ludington, and in winter communication is had by stage with the same place. Bonded debt. $1,600. Shipments, lumber, lath, shingles, shooks and staves, tan-bark and fish. The harbor here formed by the widening of Pentwater river at its mouth, and known as Pent- water lake, is about 1} miles in length by # mile in width, and is very deep, although the channel from lake Michigan will not admit of the passage of vessels drawing more than 10 feet. A thriving village of 300 or more inhab- itants, on the C. & G. T. Ry, in the town- ship of Perry, Shiawassee county, 15 miles southwest of Corunna, the county seat, 19 northeast of Lansing, and 14 southwest of Durand, via which it is 81 miles northwest of Detroit. It has 2 large flouring mills, the two costing $27,000, 1 saw and planing mill, Baptist, Congregational and Method- ist churches, and a fine new school-house costing $3,000, and a number of other im- provements are in progress. PETERSBURGH.


An incorporated village of 450 inhabi- tants on the L. S. & M. S. Rv, in Summer- field township, western central part of Mon- roe county, 17 miles west of Monroe, the county seat, an cqual distance east of Adrian, and 56 southwest of Detroit. Petersburgh was settled in 1824, and be- came incorporated in 1869. It is on the river Raisin, whence power is obtained for a flouring mill. There are Presbyterian. Methodist, Lutheran, United Brethren and Disciples churches, a large public school building, a capacious public hall, a town- ship library, and manufactories of lum- ber, flour, broom handles, staves, sash doors and woolens. Produce aud mer- chandise shipped in 1879. 1.723 tons. The face of the surrounding country is gel- erally level, and the soil rich and fertile. Value of improved land from $35 to $75 per acre.
