MANISTIQUE
Until recently known as Epsport, is the county seat of Schoolcraft county. It is situated at the month of the Manistique river, on the north shore of lake Michi- gan. Lumbering is the chief industry here at present, but excellent openings are presented for various other branches. The village has a population of 600. it contains two large saw-mills, a good store, and a hotel. and has a weekly newspaper, the Schoolcraft County Pioneer. The nearest bank is at Escanaba, with which point stages communicate tri-weekly, distance 75 miles: fare. $5. A stage also runs to Fayette, 25 miles southwest. tri-weekly. carrying mail: fare, $3. A prominent village on the G. R. & I. R. R., in Cedar Creek township, Wexford county. It was settled in 1871, and has 400 inhabitants. Lumber and flour are the principal manufactures. It has 3 churches, Christian, Congregational and Methodist, a good public school, a weekly newspaper, the Manton Tribune, a good hotel and several stores. Chief exports, lumber, lath, shingles, flour and potatoes. Manton is 16 miles east of Sherman, the county seat, 41 north of Reed City and 110 north

Was settled in 1874 and has a population of perhaps 40. It is in Kasson township, Leelenaw county, 25 miles southwest of Northport, the county seat, and 16 north- west of Traverse City, its railroad point, to which a stage runs twice weekly. Lies on the Kalamazoo river, in Marengo township, Calhoun county, and is a station on the M. C. R. R., 6 miles east of Mar- shall and 25 west of Jackson. Is located on the St. Clair river, 50 miles above Detroit, 20 below Port Huron, and 5 above Algonac. It is in Cottrellville township. St. Clair county, and is reached by rail via the G. T. and Michigan Air Line Rvs to St. Clair, 8 miles north, thence by stage. Ship building is an important interest of the place, several of the largest vessels afloat on the lakes having been built here. There are 2 saw-mills, . 2 plauing mills, a tannery, 2 breweries, a cheese fac- tory, a flouring mill, and a stave and headl- ing mill, all operated by steam. Catho- lic, Lutheran. Episcopal and Methodist churches, 1 public and 2 private schools. 1 weekly Republican newspaper, lodges of Masons and Knights of Pythias, 2 hotels and a liberal supply of stores. The soil in the neighboring country is an extremely rich black loam, commanding from $50 to $100 per acre Shipments, grain, hay, ap ples, cheese, lumber, staves and heading Stage to St. Clair daily ; fare. 50 cents, and daily to Port Huron during the winter months.
