NEW BUFFALO.
A flourishing village of 1,000 inhabi- tants, was settled in 1834. and incorporated in 1869, and is situated at the mouth of the Galien river on the shore of lake
Michigan. It is the extreme southwestern town of the State, and lies within 4 miles of the Indiana border, in New Buffalo township, Berrien county, 27 miles south- west of Berrien Springs, the county seat. New Buffalo is the southern terminus of C. & W. M. R. R., and a station the M. C. R. R., 218 west of Detroit, 126 south of Mus- kegon, 115 southwest of Grand Rapids, and 66 east of Chicago, Ill. There is con- siderable timber in the surrounding coun- try, though the only manufacturing enter- prises here at present are a furniture fac- tory and stave factory. Many of the farmers in the vicinity have lately turned their attention to fruit raising, and New Buffalo will shortly export large quantities of peaches, apples, pears, berries and other fruits. The churches are four, Baptist. Catholic, Methodist Episcopal and Luth- eran. The place has a good graded school.

NILES.
The city of Niles is situated on the St. Joseph river, in the southeast corner of Berrien county, 179 miles from Detroit and 93 from Chicago. It was settled as early as 1828, and named in honor of Hez- ekiah Niles, editor of the Viles Register. In 1831 the county was organized and called after the Hon. J. M. Berrien, a member of President Jackson's cabinet. In 1838 Niles became an incorporated vil- lage, and in 1859 a city charter was ob- tained. It lies at the junction of the \ir Line and South Bend Divs. M. C. R. R. with the main line, in Niles township. 10 miles southeast of Berrien Springs, the county seat. Among the features of in- terest are 8 churches, ? Baptist and ? Meth - odist (1 each white and colored), Catholic. Episcopal, Lutheran and Presbyterian; 5 brick public school buildings, including : large central school, employing 19 teach ers, with 1.488 enrolled pupils, three newspapers, the Democrat, Republican and Weekly Mirror (Greenback).
