HART.

The seat of justice for, and most enter- prising and progressive place in, Oceana county, is an unincorporated village, hav- ing a population of 700, in Hart township. S miles southeast of Pentwater, 40 north of Muskegon, and 235 from Detroit. In the summer of 1880 a branch of the C. & W. M. R. R. was constructed from Mears to this place, and will ultimately be pushed northward to Manistee. The soil in the vicinity is a sandy loam, producing wheat. plums, peaches and other fruits. The south branch of Pentwater river furnishes good water power, utilized by Messrs. Wigtou & Bosworth in their flouring and saw-mills. There is also a planing mill and one of staves, heading, hoops and hardwood lum- ber, both run by steam. The village has a bank, 2 weekly papers, 2 churches and a good public school. The shipments are flour, wheat, fruit, lumber, staves, head- ing, hoops and back. Telegraph, Western Union. Express, American. Mail, daily. Allen R. Chappell, postmaster. BUSINESS DIRECTORY.

HASTINGS.

The county seat of Barry county, was platted in 1837, under the supervision of E. P. Hastings, a former well known citi- zen of Detroit, whence it takes its name. It is on the Thornapple river, in the town- ship of Hastings, and is a prominent sta- tion on the Grand Rapids Div. of the M. C. R. R., 'by which it is 32 miles southeast of Grand Rapids, 62 northwest of Jackson, and 131, via Lansing and Char. lotte, from Detroit. The river here has a

fall of several feet, but has not been im- proved for manufacturing purposes. On two small tributaries, however, which unite with it in the village, power has been utilized. Hastings is beautifully laid out, the streets being wide and running at right angles. It is well supplied with public squares and parks, and has churches repre- senting the Baptist. Catholic, Episcopal, Methodist and Presbyterian denominations, good schools and substantial business in- terests. Population, 2.540. Bonded debt in school bonds, $35,000. Five weekly newspapers are published here. namely: The Democrat, Sentinel, Banner & Journal, and the Temperance Magazine and Home Gem. . Stages run to Lowell daily, to Hickory Corners semi-weekly, and tri- weekly to Bedford and Woodland Center. Express, American. Mail, daily. Tele- graph, Western Union. John M. Nevins, postmaster.
