The set- tlement was formed in 1877, is on the Au Sable river, and has a population of 120. a steam shingle mill and a public school. A small settlement in Calhoun county, 5 miles south of Marshall.


FREDONIA.


Formerly known as Rogers' Corner, is a small place and postoffice in Freedour township, Washtenaw county, 14 miles southwest of Ann Arbor and 52 southwest of Detroit. Chelsea, 8 miles north on the M. C. R. R., is its nearest shipping point, to which place a semi-weekly stage cou- veys the mail. Shipments, wheat, pork. fruit, butter and wool. A postoffice on the straits of Mackinac. in Beaugrand township, Cheboygan coun- ty, nearly midway between Cheboygan. the county seat, and Mackinaw City, being about 9 miles from either place. Until the completion of the Mackinaw Div. of the M. C. R. R. to Cheboygan, the nearest railroad point will be at Petoskey, 45 miles southwest. Timber, staves, ties, posts and cordwood are shipped. FREELAND.


A village of 200 inhabitants, located in 1850, on the Tittabawassee river, in the northern part of Saginaw county, and formerly known as Jay. It is a station on the F. & P. M. Ry, but is now an unimportant postoffice. the people having almost deserted it for Bancroft, on the C. & G. T. Ry, about 2 miles distant. Mail by stage from Vernon. tri-weekly. Isaac M. FREMONT CENTER.


A brisk town of 1,000 inhabitants on the Big Rapids Branch of the C. & W. M. R. R., in Dayton and Sheridan townships, Newaygo county. It is 23 miles northeast of Muskegon, 32 southwest of Big Rapids and 48 north of Grand Rapids, Newaygo. the county seat, is 12 miles southeast. There are in the village 4 saw-mills, 2 planing mills, 3 shingle mills, a stave and a handle factory, a tannery, 3 churches, a Union school having 4 teachers, a public ball, capacity 500, a weekly newspaper, the Indicator, and a number of substantial business houses. It is in Woodbridge town- ship, Hillsdale county, 10 miles due south of Hillsdale court house, its railroad point, with which it has tri-weekly stage commu- nication. A settlement started in May, 1880, in Thomastown township, Saginaw county, 9} miles west of Saginaw City, with which it is connected by a semi-weekly mail stage line. It is surrounded by farming land of excellent quality, and is a good point for the location of business and manufacturing enterprises, a flouring mill and a wagon shop being specially needed. FRUITLAND.

FRUITPORT.


A popular resort at the head of Spring lake, in Fruitport township, near the southern line of Muskegon county, 4 miles northeast of Grand Haven and 10 south of Muskegon. It was settled in 1868, is a station on the C. & W. M. R. R., and is a thriving village, with a population at pres- ent of about 400. The surrounding cour- try embraces fine timber and farming lands, and fruit is largely cultivated. It has a steam saw-mill, chemical works, and the extensive blast furnaces of the Spring


Lake Iron Co. Pig iron, railroad ties, tan bark, fruit and farm produce are largely shipped. Bank, First National, Grand Haven. Good openings are presented here for a blacksmith, wheelwright, tan- nery and other branches of industry. A small steamer makes four trips daily to Grand Haven and intermediate points. A small village in Elmwood township, near the northern line of Tuscola county, 15 miles from Caro, the seat of justice and nearest approach by rail via Caro Br. D. & B. C. R. R., with which there is a tri- weekly mail by stage. It has a steam flour mill, planing, saw and shingle mill, and district school. Exports grain,. lumber, telegraph poles and cranberries. It is in a hardwood section of country, the staple products of which are wheat, oats and grass. Has Catholic and Methodist churches, 2 grain elevators and some other interests, but little or no manufacturing. A number of charcoal pits are near the place, and grain, charcoal, staves, flour and
