A country postoffice in Flynn township. Sanilac county. It is 15 miles west of Croswell, its railroad point on the P. HI. & N. W. Ry, and about the same distance south of Sandusky, the county seat. Mail, weekly.


OMENA.


Also known as New Mission, is a village of about 200 inhabitants, on the west shore - of Grand Traverse bay, in the northern part of Leelenaw county, 54 miles south of Northport, the county seat, and 25 north of Traverse City, with both of which it is connected by tri-weekly mail stage: fare, 25 cents and $1, respectively. A small place on Rifle river, 6 miles from Saginaw bay. in Arenac township, Bay county, 30 miles north of Bay City. Standish on the Mackinaw Div. of the M. C. R. R., 8 miles southwest, is the nearest railway station, from whence it has a daily mail. The village was settled in 1866, and now has a population of about 100. ONEKAMA.


The Onekama postoffice, the mills, and, in fact, about all that constituted what was sometimes called Portage, were removed during the year 1880 to a point near the head of Portage lake, being some 3 miles east and 1 mile south of the old site. A village has been platted and is called One- kama. Since its start (about March 1st). its growth has been very rapid. The gov- ernment is making a harbor of refuge of Portage lake, by constructing a channel from lake Michigan, from which it is separ- ated by a narrow belt (30 rods) of high timbered hills. This channel is to be something over 300 feet wide and IS feet deep. Portage lake is very deep, and upon the completion of the channel will be navigable for the largest craft as far east as the village. The lake is fed by some 20 spring brooks of the piest water, and abounds with fish The scenery is good

ONONDAGA.


A village of 300 inhabitants pleasantly located on Grand river, in Onondaga town- ship, in the southwest corner of Ingham county. It was originally settled in 1834. and platted as a village in 1871, about two years after the construction of the G. R. Br. of the M. C. R. R., upon which it is a station. It is 17 miles northwest of Jack- son, 93 from Detroit, and 14 southwest of Mason, the county seat. Water power is derived from the river for a flouring mill, and a saw-mill is operated by steam. ONTONAGON.


Is pleasantly situated on the shore of lake Superior at the mouth of the Onto- nagon river, and is the seat of justice for Ontonagon county. It was settled in 1842, and now has a population of about 600. L'Anse, its present nearest railroad ap- proach is 45 miles east. It is surrounded by a well timbered country, having a good soil and growing hay, grain, fruits and vegetables. The village contains two steair saw-mills, a ilour mill and a shingle mill, but its principal business interests are in connection with the copper mines. located a few miles back in the interior. There are three churches, Catholic, Epis copalian and Presbyterian, an excellent Union school, and a good weekly news- paper, the Miner. Stage, with mail. daily to Rock!and, Greenland and Houghton. ORCHARD LAKE.


Deriving its name from one of a chain of five lakes, is a small village and beauti- ful summer resort in West Bloomfield township. Oakland county, 45 miles south- west of Pontiac court house, on the D .. G. H. & M. Ry, its shipping point, connected by daily mail conveyance, and via which Detroit is 30 miles southeast. The lakes are all partially connected, some of them interspersed with islands. The country adjacent is attractive, and has drawn to it a wealthy class of residents. A first-class hotel is largely patronized during the sum- mer months.


This delightful spot is also the location of the Michigan Military Academy, which, although established no later than 1877, is attracting considerable attention through- out the northwest. Major J. S. Rogers, postmaster.

It is a station on the D. & B. C. R. R .. 40 miles above De- troit and 20 south of Lapeer. The place, owing to its pleasant location and sur- ronudings, is an attractive summer resort. It is supported by a thriving farming com- munity, has ? churches, Congregational and Methodist, Sons of Temperance and Masonic lodges, 2 flour mills and 2 hotels, the Sims House being the principal one. Fruit, flour and grain are shipped. Mail.

A village and landing on the north shore of lake Michigan, in Newton town- ship, Mackinac county. It is 60 miles by land west of Mackinac, the county seat, 40 by water west of St. Ignace, and 78 from Cheboygan. Fish forms the principal shipments. Settled, 1880. Mail, weekly. A discontinued postoffice in Osceola township, Livingston county. 6} miles northeast of Howell, on the D., L. & N. R. R.


OSCODA.


A thriving village, now claiming 2.000 inhabitants, is located on the \u Sable river, near its outlet into lake Huron. It was settled in 1874, and is directly north of and adjoining the village of Au Sable. in the township of Oscoda, Iosco county. 15 miles northeast of Tawas City, the sent of justice, 75 above Bay City, and 175 from Detroit. The country back of and adjacent to Oscoda comprises extensive forests of pine timber, and lumbering is one of the chief interests of the town. It has several large steam saw-mills, plau- ing mill, a machine shop, foundry, and au extensive salt works, claiming to be the largest in the state. Lumber, salt, latl:, box stuff, bed slats, and fish are shipped. The place has 3 churches, Methodist. Catholic and Presbyterian, a bank, a graded school, employing 4 teachers and having an attendance of 300 pupils, an opera hall, a weekly newspaper, the Lake Shore Democrat, and a liberal supply of stores and other interests.
