A thriving village of 500 inhabitants, lo- cated partly in Denver township, Newaygo county, but chiefly in Newfield township, Oceana county, 25 miles southeast of Hart, the seat of justice, 20 northeast of Neway- go court house, and 26} northeast of Mon- tague. Fremont Center, on the Big Rap- ids Br. C. & W. M. R. R., 12 miles south- east, is its nearest depot. It is located on White river, in a splendid farming coun- try. It has a steam saw mill and a flour- ing mill, saw-mill and pump factory, run by water power. The products of these mills, with farm produce, form the ship- ments. „There are 4 churches, Adventist, Baptist, Methodist and Presbyterian, the latter just completed, and a good public school here. HIGHLAND STATION.
A pleasant little village on the F. & P. :- M. Ry, in Highland township. Oakland county, 11 miles south of Holly, 18 due west of Pontiac, and 44 northwest of De- troit. It was settled in 1873, has a beauti- ful farming country surrounding it, and is a good business point. Population, 200. Fifteen new buildings, shopsand dwellings have been erected during the past year. Shipments, farm produce, vinegar and fruit. Pettibone creek supplies water power to a flouring mill. A vinegar fac-

While Alabastining is superior to all other ways of refinishing walls. such as Kalsomining, Papering, Painting, &e., it is also the best. cheapest, and by far the most durable finish

It is well known that the finish known as "hard finish," or "putty coat," is not a durable one, and that many times it is soiled by work- men, and cracked by shrinking of timbers in the building. so as to re- quire coating with something before the building is ready for occu- pancy, or soon after, as it is delicate and brittle and is put on good buildings before the finishing of wood-work, painting etc., and before the building is thoroughly dried out from being dampened and swelled by the wet plastering. While the Alabastine finish can be applied the last thing before moving in the building, and the cracks invariably found in the "hard finish," are avoided.
The coat of Alabastine is thin and not designed to fill and smooth uneven plaster, but one coat of tint, or two of white, mixed the same as for other surfaces, produces a beautiful, even finish, and the most durable, and may be renewed from time to time by inexperienced hands, and every additional coat adds to the strength of the wall; is hardened by age, and will not fade.
There are different ways of plastering walls for this Alabastine finish, according to the amount of expense and labor to be expended. as it will make a durable and handsome finish on one coat of common mortar, floated off and made comparatively smooth, and a better one on a good smooth sand finish as usually made for nice papering. A good finish is made by putting on the first coat of ordinary mortar and after it is dry put on what a plasterer would call between a sand finish and a "browning" coat, and float it off good or trowel it. This latter. two coat work, may be made a first class wall by taking care to "gage" it just right with lime, (and sometimes a little stucco is used to set it). smoothing it when it is set just enough to work well, &c.
A good man who is used to the brush will put on from 300 to 40 square yards of this Alabastine tinted finish in a day, on the new wall where only one coat is necessary, if tinted, and the material will not cost more than $1.50 or $2.50, unless the wall is very rough.
The new work must be thoroughly dry before applying Alabastine. NOTE .- The plasters do not all favor this process, as they think it will throw the finishing out of their hands, and that there will not be as much work to do if they do do the Alabastining; but if they would take hold of it before the people, do it themselves or hire green hands. they would find it to their advantage, and many buildings would be finished with it that are now left withont finishing.

Is situated on the St. Joseph river, in the township and county of Hillsdale, of which it is the judicial seat. It is a pleas- audy located and thriving place of about 4,000 inhabitants, originally settled in 1832 arki incorporated a city in 1869. The D., H. & S. W. R. R. intersects the L. S. & M. S. Ry here, the two lines affording direct communication to all points. The city is 30 miles south of Jackson, 91 south- west of Detroit, 65 northwest of Toledo, And 178 east of Chicago. The manufac- tures consist of flour, castings, sash and blinds, edge tools, extension tables, beer, etc. Shipments, flour, produce, grain, fruits, furniture and live stock. Aggregate exports for 1880, 11,342 tons. Bonded in- debtedness, $16,000. Assessed value of real and personal property, $2,062,240 (full value). Farms in the neighborhood are valued at from 860 to $85 per acre. Among the prominent features, private and public, are 8 churches. Adventist, Methodist, Lutheran, Presbyterian, Catho- lic, Episcopal, Universalist, and Free Will Baptist, 2 national banks, 4 newspapers. the Standard (Republican), the Weekly Bu- iness (National), the Herald, and the Dem- urat, 2 good hotels, a large public hall, 3 ward schools, a good Union school, and a Free Will Baptist institution known as Hillsdale College. The agricultural soci- ety's grounds and appurtenances are valned at $20,000. Numerous improvements of a very substantial nature have been made here during the past year, and others are in progress, indicating a gratifying and heal- thy growth. .
