Settled in 1872 by Hon. Charles Mears, from whom it takes its name, is a village of 300 inhabitants, on the C. & W. M. R. R., in Golden township, Oceana county. It is 4 miles west of Hart, the county seat, 7 south of Pentwater, and 37 north of Mus- kegon. Two saw-mills, a shingle and siding mill, an extensive charcoal kiln, and a bowl factory are the chief industries. Signifying in the Indian vernacular. "Half-way," was a name given to the lake on which the settlement is located from its being abont midway between Clam Lake and the Manistee river. Its location is in Colfax township, Wexford county, 12 miles southeast of Sherman court house and 8 northwest of Bond's Mills, a station on the G. R. & I. R. R., via which it is 112 miles above Grand Rapids. Lumber, wooden bowls and shingles are manu- factured, and wheat, hay and potatoes are

A thriving little settlement in Morton township, Mecosta county. It is on the Little Muskegon river, and is a station on the D., L. & N. R. A point on lake Superior, in Chippewa county. between Sault de Ste. Marie and White Fish Point.
MENDON.
A flourishing incorporated village of 900 inhabitants, in the township of Mendon, St. Joseph county. It is on the St. Jo- seph river, and is a prominent station on the G. R. & I. R. R .. 44 miles north of Wasepi, the crossing of the Air Line Div. M. C. R. R., 21 south of Kalamazoo, 8 northeast of Centreville, the county seat, and 140 west of Detroit. It is in a fine and highly improved farming country, of which grain and fruit are staple products. The river affords good water power, and considerable manufacturing by both water and steam power is carried on. The place has Catholic, Christian. Episcopal and Methodist Episcopal churches, 2 small libraries, 2 private banks, a graded school of 4 teachers, & weekly newspapers, The Week. I! Globe and The Mendon Times and 2 hotels. A brick business block, a grain elevator and a dozen or more substantial brick dwellings have been added to the list of improvements here since our last issue.
Assessed valuation of real and personal property, $283,715. Grain, live stock. general produce and essential oils are ship- ped, the latter more largely than at any other point in the northwest. The judicial seat of the county of Me- nominee, a village of 3,12$ inhabitants, lies at the mouth of the Menominee river, on the west shore of Green bay, in the ex- treme southern point of the county. It is on the line of the C. & N. W. Br. 264 miles north of Chicago, 137 south of Mar- quette and 54$ by rail from Detroit. Me- nominee is an important lumber manufac- turing point, having in the immediate neighborhood 6 large saw-mills with a yearly capacity of 100,000.000 feet of lum- ber. A blast furnace, in full operation. turns out 8,000 tons of pig iron per an- num. Extensive beds of iron ore are le- ing developed in the county, several com. panies having organized and located mines at Little Sturgeon Falls, Breen Ingalls and other points. There are 4 churches. METAMORA.
On the D. & B. C. R. R., 52 miles north of Detroit, is a village of 260 inhabitants. originally settled in 1836. It is in the township of Metamora, Lapeer county, S miles south of Lapeer court house, and 56 south of Bay City. Metamora has ? churches, Methodist and Congregational, 3 graded school, a grain elevator, and several good stores. It is a prominent trading and shipping point for the surrounding coun- try. Shipments in 1879, 7,250,317 lbs. Stage to Hadley, 8 miles west, and to Al- mont, 14 miles east, and intermediate points, daily, and daily mail. Express, American. Telegraph, Western Union.
