MONROE.

Next to Detroit is the oldest city in Mich- igan. It is the judicial seat in Monroc county, and is pleasantly located on the river Raisin, about 4 miles above its month. The first permanent settlement was made here in 1784, by a French colony from Canada. The first Americans located here about ten years later. The place endured all the horrors of the early Indian wars, and made but little progress until after the war of 1812, when for several years it kept pace fully with Detroit. The harbor here, owing to its peculiar formation, is one of the safest on the lakes. The Michigan Southern Railway reached Monroe in 1837, and for some years the city was its castern terminus. Communication is now afford- ed by the L. S. & M. S., the C. S. and the F. & P. M. railways, by which it is 35 miles southwest of Detroit, 117 southeast of Saginaw, 33 cast of Adrian, and 20 north of Toledo, Ohio.

The manufacturing interests comprise 5 flour mills, a spoke factory. 2 foundries. 3 sash and blind factories, a glass sand mill, woolen mill, paper mill, 2 tanneries, a brick yard, 2 breweries, a plaster mill. and extensive nurseries in and about the city.

The press is represented by two enter- prising weekly journals, the Commercial (Republican), and Monitor (Democratic). There are 10 churches, 3 of which are Catholic and the remainder Protestant, of the different denominations. It has a very tine Union or High school building. and several ward schools, with ? teach- ers and 425 pupils. There is also a couvent and a young ladies' seminary. The city library now contains 2.500 volumes. A handsome court house, built of lime- stone, has just been completed at a cost of $25,000. The last assessment places the

taxable value of the city at $2,400.000. and it has a bonded indebtedness of $27.000. The population is slightly over 5,000. The land in the neighborhood consists of a rich sandy loam, with clay subsoil, the surface is level, and grain, grass, fruit and berries are grown in profusion. Flour, paper, provisions, grain, fruit and nursery stock are exported.

The city enjoys the best mail facilities, and has offices of the United States Express and Western Union Telegraph Cos. Win. A. Noble, postmaster.
