IONIA.
A thriving and attractive city of 4.167 inhabitants, is situated on Grand river, near the geographical center of Ionia county, of which it is the seat of justice. The land upon which the town now stands was taken up in 1832, and in the spring follow- ing a settlement was begun by a colony under the leadership of Sammuel Dexter, from Boston, Mass. The settlement in. creased slowly until 1836, when a village was platted and the county seat was lo- cated here. In 1857 the D. & M. Ry reached the settlement, and in the same year a village charter was obtained. In 1865 it was reincorporated by special leg- islation. In 1869 the Ionia & Lansing, now a part of the D., L. & N. R. R., was
completed, and in the same year a city charter was obtained. Ionia is noted for the beauty of its location and surround- ings, and for its handsome residences and churches. It lies partly at the foot of a high bluff, having on the south and east a wide expanse of level- and extremely fer- tile land, through which the river courses its way. On the bluff, which is partly within the limits of the corporation, are many of the finest residences in the place. These are chiefly built of a light-colored brick made from a clay found in the vicin- ity. The business and public buildings are also largely built of this material. The city has nine religious organizations, Bap- tist, Catholic, Christian, Congregational. Dutch Reform, Episcopal, Lutheran, Meth- odist and Presbyterian. Most of these have elegant and all of them neat places of worship. The educational interests are represented by a graded school building. costing $35,000, and 2 ward schools. Just west of the city is the new Intermediate State Prison, an institution designed to re- lieve the Jackson prison of the less hein- ous class of offenders. Present bonded indebtedness of city, $4,000; assessed val- uation. $1,700,000. Among the buildings erected during the past 2 years, Weber's brown stone block, a splendid structure. is the most noted. One daily and 3 weekly newspapers are published. There are 3 banks, 2 national and 1 private, a hall with a seating capacity of 700, and 2 first-class hotels, the Bailey Honse being considered the best. The shops of the D., L. & N. R. R. are located here. An abundant sup- ply of excellent water is obtained from a never-failing spring on the hill north of the city. Besides the two intersecting rail- roads, a branch of the D .. L. & N. con- nects Ionia with Stanton and Edmore. commanding thereby an immense lumber business. The soil in the vicinity is some- what gravelly, but is excellent for farming purposes, all the cereals, grass, potatoes and other root crops and apples being suc. cessfully grown. Telegraph, Atlantic & Pacific and Western Union. Express. American. Alexander H. Heath, post master.
