A village of over 1,000 inhabitants, lo- cated on the Grand Rapids Div. of the M. C. R. R., 50 miles northwest of Jackson and 45 east of Grand Rapids It is on
Thornapple river, in Castleton township. Barry county, 12 miles east of Hastings, the county seat. The settlement was formed on the completion of the railroad to this point, and its growth has been steady and continuous, controlling a trade bevond what is usual in places of its size. There are Methodist and Christian churches, good public schools and a weekly newspaper, the Nashville News. Moderate water power is afforded by the river, and lumber, head- ings, flour, etc, are manufactured. The shipments comprise lumber. headings, live stock and general farin produce. Express, American. number of mines located in the city and vicinity. It is reached by the C. & N. W. Ry. and is also a station on the M., H. & O. R. R., 12 miles west of Marquette, 51 east of L'Anse and 62 northwest of Escanaba. The Pioneer furnace is located here. There are 3 churches, Catholic, Episcopal and Methodist, a weekly newspaper, the Iron Herald, an opera house with a seating ca- pacity for 500, and ample school accom- modations. Mail, daily. NEW BALTIMORE.
An incorporated village of 1,100 ichabi- tants, lies on the north shore of Anchor bay, an arm of lake St. Clair, in Chester- field township, Macomb county, 30 miles above Detroit by water or 40 by rail, 32 southwest of Port Huron and 4} southeast of New Haven, its railrond point on the G. T. Ry, with which it is connected by a daily mail stage line; fare, 50 cents. A stage also runs to Algonac and Marine City daily during winter: fare, to either point, $1. The village has Catholic, Congregational, Episcopal and Luthern churches, and a school known as the Hatheway Institute, built at a cost of $22,000, bequeathed by the late Hon. Gil- bert Hatheway. Lumber, handles, staves and heading are largely manufactured and shipped. Improved land in the neighbor- hood of the village commands about $50 per acre. Telegraph, Western Union. D. The place is in Huron town- ship, Wayne county, has Baptist, Metho- dist and Lutheran churches, a district school, an office of the American Express and Western Union Telegraph Co. Bank at Monroe.
