The city also possesses two large flour- ing mills, half a dozen machine shops and foundries, 6 planing, sash and door fac- tories, 3 national, 1 savings and 1 private banking institutions, and numerous small industries.

The last census, loosely taken, shows a population of a little over 19,000, but the school census and vote cast at the last election, as compared with other cities, shows an actual population of 22,000.

The educational facilities of the city are nowhere surpassed. It has 12 large pub- lic school buildings, and a number of pri- vate schools.

In benevolent institutions it is repre- seuted by a fine large hospital, under the auspices of the Sisters of Charity, an Or- pbau Asylum and Home for the Friendless. The religious interests are represented by 18 church societies, nearly all having elegant and commodious places of worship.

In hotel facilities the city is surpassed by no city in the west, save Chicago, and hence it is a point sought to be reached by business men traveling through the State. as well as by tourists. The bulletin issued by the National Board of Health. January, 1881, shows the death rate per 1.000 peo- ple to be less than any other city in the United States, save Cambridge, Mass.

A city is judged largely by its press, and in this respect East Saginaw is ex- celled by no city of its population in the west, and cqualed by few. The Daily Courier is owned by a stock company, is independent in politics and the largest and most widely circulated journal in the State (excepting only the Detroit press). The daily morning Herald is controlled by a stock company, is Republican in politics, is ably conducted, and an enterprising and useful representative of the city's in- terests.
