MIDLAND.

The judicial seat of Midland county. is situated at the confluence of the Tittaba- wassee and Chippewa rivers, in the town- ship of Midland, and is the most important town along the line of the F. & P. M. Ry, between Saginaw and Ludington. It is 20 miles northwest of the former, 11; cast of the latter, and 118 northwest of Detroit. Charles Fitzhew, the first settler, located here in 1833, and the place was incorpo- rated as a village in 1869. It now claims a population of 2,000. The more prominent interests of the place embrace 4 churches, Episcopal, Catholic. Baptist and Methodist (an organization of Presbyterians being at present without a church building), a sub- stantial school building costing $30,000, 5 teachers being employed, a large school library, lodges of Masons, Odd Fellows and Good Templars, 2 fine solid brick blocks of recent construction, an opera house with a seating capacity of 700, 2 weekly newspapers, a flouring mill, a bro- mine factory, and several saw and shingle mills. The manufacture of salt has re- cently been commenced, and 5 salt wells are now in operation. In consequence of the destructive fires to which the town has at various times been subjected, brick is rapidly superseding wood as a building material. The surrounding country is largely pine timber land, but agriculture is being carried on to some extent, and excel- lent crops of wheat, oats, grass, etc., are grown. Shipments, lumber in its various forms, flour, salt, shingles and farm pro- ducts. Stage to Lee's Corner and Porter, weekly. Mail, daily. Express, American. Telegraph, Western Union. Benjamin.F. Bradley, postmaster.
