KELLY'S CORNERS.


A village of 150 inhabitants, in the township of Woodstock. Lenawee county. It is in the extreme northwestern corner of the county, one-half mile from Wood- stock station on the D., H. & S. W. R. R. Distance from Adrian, 22 miles, from De- troit, 75. Grand river and the Raisin here approach each other within 5 miles. The village has two churches, a graded school, a flour mill (water power), and saw, plan- ing and cider mills operated by steam. Nearest bank at Brooklyn. The locality was settled as early as 1835. It bas a Methodist church, public school, steam chair factory, saw mill, brick vard, and offices of the American Express

Or Thompson's Corners, as it was origin ally called, is a village of 150 people, set- tled in 1861, in the townships of Fair Ha- ven and Brookfield, Huron county. It is 20 miles west of Bad Axe. the county seat. 24 above Caro, the nearest railway station. 35 northeast of Bay City, and 6 from Sebe- waing, its shipping point by water. A. steam flouring mill, a saw-mill. Evangel- ical, Lutheran and Methodist Episcopai churches and a public school are in the place. Bank, First National, Bay City. In Kinderhook township, southern part of Branch county, is a small hamlet and postoffice on the tri-weekly mail route from Coldwater, the county seat, 10 miles north to Fremont, Ind., which is on the D., H. & S. W. R. R., 9 miles southeast. It has no important business interests.

A station on the T. C. Br. G. R. & I. R. R., in Grand Traverse county. (See Poradise.)

A station on the P. H. & N. W. Ry, 11 miles northwest of Port Huron. It is in Grant township, St. Clair county.


KINGSTON.


Known locally as Newbury, has a popu- lation of 85, and is situated in Koylington and Kingston townships, southeastern part of Tuscola county, 15 miles from Caro, the county seat. Wahjamega, on the Caro Div. D. & B. C. R. R., 11 miles west is its shipping point. The village has a Baptist and two Methodist congregations, Union school, steam flour and saw-mills. KLINGER'S LAKE.


A postoffice and station of the L. S. & M. S. Ry, located on the lake from which


it takes its name, in White Pigeon town- ship, central southern part of St. Joseph county. It is 10 miles south of Center- ville, the county seat, 6 miles east of White Pigeon and an equal distance west of Stur- gis. It is in a splendid farming region, land commanding from $60 to $80 per acre. Shipments of wheat, potatoes and live stock in 1879, 145 car loads. Adjacent to the lake, which is a beautiful sheet of water, is a noted mineral spring, which is being fitted up as a pleasure and health resort. Bank, First National, Sturgis. LAINGSBURGH.


A thriving town on the Saginaw Div. M. C. R. R., in Sciota township, near the western line of Shiawassee county. It was settled in 1836 by Peter Laing, and now claims a population of about 700. The surrounding country is rolling and some- what rough, but comprises good farming land, wheat, live stock and dairy products forming the staple exports. The place has Baptist, Congregational and Methodist churches, and a Union school, a large new school building being contemplated. A steam saw and shingle mill, 2 hotels and a weekly Repub- lican newspaper are among the interests here. Bank at Cadillac. Farming land is valued at from $2.50 to $12 per acre. Fare to Cadillac, $1. A village claiming over 2,000 inhabit- ants, lies on the west bank of Torch lake. an arm of Portage lake, in the Keweenaw peninsula. It is in Schoolcraft township in the northern part of Houghton county and is the southern terminus of the Hecl :: & Torch Lake R. R., a line five and one - half miles long (four foot gauge), built and owned by the Calumet & Hecla Minin Co. for the conveyance of their ores from the mine to the stamps, which are locate i at Lake Linden, for the advantage derived from the abundance of water over wha: would be enjoyed at a point nearer the mine. A settlement established in 1875, in Kear- ney township. Antrim county. 3 miles north of Bellaire, the county seat, and 10 northwest of Mancelona, on the G. R. & I. R. R., its shipping station, whence it has stage communication 4 times each week. A Methodist church, district school, flour and saw-mills, the latter operated by water power from Intermediate river, are located here. Flour and lumber, with some farm produce, are shipped.
