LENOX.
Better known as Ridgeway (the former being the name of the postoffice), is a vil- lage of 300 inhabitants, settled in 1835, and located at the junction of the Grand Trunk and Michigan Air Line railways, in Lenox township. Macomb county. It is 17 miles above Mt. Clemens, the county seat, an equal distance west of St. Clair, 21 south- west of Port Huron, and 41 northeast of Detroit. Has Baptist. Intheran and Metli- odist churches. a Union school, steam saw and planing mills, and other interests. Daily stage to Memphis, 6 miles north, tri- weekly to Columbus, 3 miles, and weekly to Casco. 5 miles. Staves, heading and general produce are shipped. Express, Canadian. Telegraph. Western Union. LEONI.
A village of 250 population, on the M. C. R. R., 7 miles east of Jackson and 69 from Detroit. It is in Leoni township, Jackson county, on Leoni creek, the outlet of Grass lake, upon which there is one flouring mill. A good farming country surrounds the village, of which wheat, corn and grass are staple productions. A Methodist Episcopal church and a public school are here. Telegraph, Western Union. LESLIE.
The village of Leslie is pleasantly situ- ated on the Saginaw Div. of the M. C. R. R., 15 miles north of Jackson, 24 south of Lansing and 90 west of Detroit. It is in the township of Leslie, Ingham county, 10 miles south of Mason, the county scat. There are four churches, Baptist. Freewill Baptist, Congregational and Methodist, three hotels, the Eagle being first class, a national bank, a large brick Union school building that cost $20,000. The Leslie Local, a lively weekly paper, is published. The village has no water power, though it has the finest supply of artesian wells in the State. At a depth of 170 feet, and a cost of only $400. flowing water is ob- tained in great abundance. There are eight of these wells, all having medical properties (something similar to the waters at Eaton Rapids). Leslie was tirst settled in 1836 and incorporated as a village in 1869. An incorporated village of 800 inhabi- tants on the line of the D., G. II. & M. Ry, in Fenton township, near the southern line of Genesee county. It is 18 miles south of Flint, the county seat, and 55 from Detroit. The manufactories comprise a flour and saw-mill, run by water power derived from the Shiawassee river, and a carriage shop and handle factory operated by steam. The churches are Methodist and Presbyterian. A weekly newspaper, the Record. is published. Is located on the line between Sparta and Chester townships, Ottawa county, 176 miles from Detroit, 25 northeast of Grand Haven court house, and 16 above Grand Rapids, from whence it has a mail stage five times a week; fare, 35 cents. Sparta, on the G. R., N. & L. S. R. R., 5 miles east, is the shipping point and nearest bank. Has Free Will Baptist and Meth- odist churches, graded school, and a steam flour mill. LITCHFIELD.
Incorporated as a village in 1877, con- tains, according to the census of 1880, a population of 680. It is on the Lansing Div. L. S. & M. S. Rv, in Litchfield town- ship, Hillsdale county, 12 miles northwest of Hillsdale, the county seat, and 31 by rail southwest of Jackson. It is on a branch of the St. Joseph river, which furnishes water power for one flour mill. The other manufactories, embracing 2 planing mills, a saw-mill and a flour mill, are operated by steam. The place contains Evangelical, Baptist, Methodist Episcopal and Congre- gational churches, the latter costing $15,- 000, a graded school of 4 teachers, a ladies' library with 325 volunnes, a hotel, and 3 or more substantial brick business blocks. 1 weekly newspaper, the Litchfield Gazette, is published. Litchfield is substantially a temperance town, no liquor whatever bo- ing sold here. The exports by rail in 1879. consisting chiefly of grain, live stock and other farm products, were 3.826 tons.
